I'm a noobshit trying out Linux by running Puppy from a USB drive. Ran a terminal, literally typed in listed post as is. I'm guessing ~ should point home or whatever, and running as root may make people rage. It's the default to run as and ~ is set as.
>>
>>45212391

Did I just have a stroke or is your post poorly written? I didn't really understand it.
But, if you want to find which commands you ran last, just use the arrow up key to look through them.
Also, Puppy Linux is kinda... bad. Its main usage is for people who need a barely working and minimal system from USB flash drives for portable use (nowadays you can get better portable solutions). Why not install a proper distribution in a virtual machine or boot a live session of one from an USB flash drive (the downside will be that the changes won't be permanent)?
>>
>>45212372
Coding, especially at entry level, is basically just editing small text files. So any PC will do.

That said, JAVA IDEs tend to be quite resource-hungry. You'll want, say, 4GB or better 8GB RAM at least. Compilation is faster with faster CPUs, but you hardly need an i7 as a beginner.

Your gpu doesn't fucking matter, unless you plan on coding vidya.

Why does the top style of adapter exist when the bottom style is so much more convenient? Is there any legitimate reason to put all that bulk in the most inconvenient place possible where you can only fit it at the very end of your surge protector?

Is there a legitimate benefit to it or is it just that it's cheaper or something and manufacturers don't give a fuck that it's inconvenient as shit?

But you could also try the other ways to learn. I tried:

>codeacademy
Pretty bad. Basically only teaches you how to type things you see on the page. Doesn't explain things and the only good thing about is that it teaches you the syntax.

>Learn Python the Hard Way book
Awful, really awful. It does start from scratch, but the way it teaches you boils down to "type this, read this short explanation and then look shit up on the internet". I had to quit once I got to the advanced parts like object oriented programming, because it didn't make any sense (switched to the Gaddis book and it was explained better there).

Too random and inconsistent, all over the place. The same applies to random pages on the internet.

Installing Debian from the netinstaller, upgrading to testing and then installing Openbox, tint2 and PCmanFM would be the sane choice. Not for someone who's just starting out though, because it's unnecessarily complicated.

Hey /g/. I did try googling first, but nothing helpful came up.

My HDD makes its typical working noise for a split second every 5 or 6 seconds. It's like it's developed a heartbeat. Not the click of death, just that typical noise except on a constant schedule.

It still works fine and all tests I ran on it came back fine so it's not a huge deal, but the noise is pretty irritating at the moment until I learn to tune it out. Any idea what's going on?

I know that the cold weather makes fans make crazy noises when they're first starting up, but I dunno if HDDs are affected in the cold as well.

I know a HDD won't last forever, but it's not really a clicking noise. It's more like something in the background that keeps accessing the HDD. I've had indexing turned off so it's probably not that and I've run malware programs constantly for over a year without a single positive.

I went and searched for a bunch of click of death sounds and nothing seemed remotely similar. It's not even really the usual HDD working noise, it's much more muted though that may be just cause it's for a way shorter duration than typical HDD usage.

No. DC power (what a PSU outputs) doesn't work quite like AC (what comes out of your wall socket) where you can daisy chain. Every "plug" coming off of your PSU is called a rail, and each rail can only run one device.

What language Best Language for makea da vidya?

I'm learning C++ in a class and C++ with SDL on my own. It's pretty fun. I plan to also learn OpenGL and maybe WebGL after SDL.

I also heard of something called STL.

But, what language should I actually use if I wanted to say... put games on Steam?
Should I make C++ or Java games (I plan to learn Java, too)?
Is there another language that'd be better?

>Don't really like VB, and I don't plan to take the next course in it. Also, only useful on Windows. When I briefly tried (non-visual) BASIC, that was ok, but eh. I kinda like doing shit the hard way.
>Don't see a reason to take up C# since that's mainly for Windows, too.

My main purposes:
>RPGs
>Visual Novels
>Steam games
>Maybe some Android and iOS games/apps
>Desktop gadgets (not MS-specific, I mean things you run on your desktop, example is in pic[kawaii anime buddies])
>Eventually, an MMORPG (Probably Java, right?)

Overall, I've heard C++ is good for this, but I've also heard Java, so can someone give me some advice as to what each of those things would best use?
Also, when it comes to browser-based games, is Java really the only goto()? Or, does Python or Ruby/Ruby on Rails hold any real weight for comprehensive gaming?

Encryption is a really complicated topic to begin with. However, what essentially happens is all your plain text data aka non-encrypted data (File1.exe, File2.exe) gets turned into useless garble (xhbGA25jn, AGajn52mg) through the use of very complicated algorithms.

That essentially locks the data in that state using a key which is a password in most cases. Then to unlock it and bring it back to plain-text readable data you either use the same key (same key to lock and unlock) or in some cases a different key (1 key to lock and 1 key to unlock).

Thats a really rudimentary explanation and any real cryptographer would probably crucify me for my ignorance.

As for programs idk. I think bitlocker is pretty good.

I think so. I've only seen those a few times, but if you have a dial-up or dedicated phone line, I'm pretty sure you can. Notice one is IN and the other is OUT. You'll connect the IN to the wall and the OUT to the modem.

pick up the language you want. C++ is fine, C, java, C# what you fucking want. The thing you should be careful : try picking a language and a library that are multi platform, because many people are on linux or mac, so thing about them.

Ah, I see. Well, yeah, it probably would then. If I'm correct, those type of plugs are mainly for surge protection over the phone line. So, like if something struck the telephone poles, it wouldn't burn out your modem or modem card.
Possibly, it's also for convenience, somehow. I've only actually seen those types of plugs in a LabSim module for a Hardware class.

It doesn't actually provide a phone line itself.

MySQL isn't bad, but I (posted >>45216423) like Postgres more.

>>
>>45216699
Depends on how much the cost needs to be factored in.
If you can afford an extra $100-200, go grab a 256-512 GB SSD and put the OS on that. Then, grab a 7200+ RPM HDD for data and media.

If you're REALLY strapped, then just get a 7200 RPM HDD.

Whatever you do, though, don't get 5400 RPM, because it's slow as fuck and not worth it.

A good combo would be a $200-ish 512 GB SSD and a $150-ish 2TB 7200 RPM HDD.

Damn thats a bummer

Are there any possible solution to turn a socket or something from this into a phone line

Im wanting to get a direct connection to the modem rather than wireless
>>
>>45216721
Yeah, leave that in the wall, and use the phone wire from that to the surge protector, and then another wire from the surge protector to your computer if you wanna use the protector.
>>
>>45216766
No, sorry. A phone line is a series and short electrical signals to transfer data. It's 0's and 1's. It also runs at only a few volts max.

An electrical outlet is an alternating continuous flow of electricity running at between 110-220 volts.

They're completely incompatible and don't really have anything to do with each other.
If you plugged a phone line into your modem and an electrical socket (somehow), it'd blow up the modem and melt the wire, probably cause an electrical fire.

What do you want to wipe? You mean just return to a more or less default Windows state? Just pop in your install disk or boot from your recovery partition (depending on how your setup came to be) and do a clean reinstall, which can optionally include a format.

Of course your data is still recoverable with certain easily available software, but your brother probably doesn't know that and anyway I doubt it's anything you care THAT much to hide. If you're really paranoid just find DBAN and a similar tool though it's more work and will leave you with an empty unformatted drive instead of a working OS installation.

4) Well, I can't agree or disagree with this, but it doesn't eat up assloads extra, at least.
5) Choice OS? For now. Permavirgin? Hopefully not. Too dumb for Linux? No, too efficient and I <3 GUI. I WILL take a course in Linux next semester... but I seriously doubt that would be persuasive in terms of getting me to switch... ever... It's not out-of-the-box GUI-maximized.
>Fairly enough, neither is Windows, but Windows is maybe 80% as GUI as I want my OS. Every Linux distro I've ever (briefly) tried is 40% or less. And, installation has to be through the command prompt, usually, and it doesn't just auto-install shit the way I downloaded it (what happened to COFF/ELF???). I normally DON'T change the file, and I want it to install as-is. I can ALWAYS remove it later, if I don't like it or if it installed other random crap. But, then again, I never actually saw a Programs and Features system on my distros...

Listen, I usually start getting ignored by some people when I argue about Linux. I WILL be trying it out, but I have no REAL intention to use it, except maybe Arch... as a project... WHEN I've basically MASTERED C++ (+/- C).
>Because, EVERYTHING must be GUI[-enabled] (as in, you CAN use CLI, but you NEED NOT).

That's why I wanna make my own OS at some point. So, I can uber-max the GUI for every single feature. Also, so it's integrated with desktop anime AI systems with access to your mic and webcam to be extra fucking kawaii built-in super cute.

Internet Explorer will not ever be a good, modern Web Browser, because of it's terrible history. Give up, and move on. It's obvious Microsoft is going with anime characters to lure in 4chan users. Get the fuck out, and fuck off.

But, in addition to not wanting to actually argue, I actually have to leave. So, I'll be going.

Cool, thanks. Never had the urge to record anything so sounds like a pass for me.

Yeah, it's really annoying how there's no update option from their default control panel - AMD fucks a lot up, but they at least got that right

Firstly, I'm not shilling. These are MY reasons for using it.

The only thing MS pays me for is my use of Bing (I WOULD use Google, if Bing didn't give me Amazon gift cards every few months).

So, I don't personally care if you use IE or not. I only listed why I do.
Also, I'm not shilling for you to use a Windows, either. If you like CLI to install programs and shit, as well as change a lot of settings, good on you. I don't. I use CLI for MySQL databases and when I need to do administration, such as process force-killing and network configurations. But, I don't wanna touch that shit for modifying the way my computer looks and functions overall. Just gimme 3ps and hacks that I can double-click.

And, IDK if they're using anime characters for you guys. I'm one of the biggest weeb faggots most of you will see here.
And, I don't give 2 shits that you don't like it.
>pic related. I actually DO work in this envt.

But, NOW, I really have to go...

Why do cd/dvd drives have neodymium magnets next to the lens?

I heard that they had them today, so I took apart two old broken cd-rom drives and harvested the magnets. These magnets are stupidly strong.

Are there any differences in the power inputs between graphics cards in different countries?

I'm considering getting my friend to ship me a GTX 970 from America to Australia, but I don't want the card to arrive then realise that my PSU isn't compatible with it.
