My x200 arrived yesterday, it's lovely.
Have installed a minimalist gentoo, need to set up x windows when I get in from work
>>
>>43308036
How do I get better battery life on x200?
I installed both tlp and powertop and still don't get anything near the ~10 hours people on here brag about. I'm running xubuntu, btw.
>>
>>43308876
It may be that the battery is in bad condition.
>>
The educational facility where I work has changed their minds from macbooks to thinkpad yogas.

Is there any reliability issue I should know about yogas compared to other lines in the modern renovo lineup?

I think they're sold because of a PD they went to and my X61T
>>
>>43309247
From what I have heard the yoga laptops are one of the most reliable modern thinkpad lines. However I have heard that they might have issues with ghosting.
>>
>>43308036
Daily question.
Is the x60 worth 260EU if I cannot get it for cheaper?
>>
>>43309247

Well they're overpriced and shit, but I wouldn't say any worse than other modern "thinkpads"

Should have just gone with macbooks really, they're overpriced but they're not shit
>>

Why the fuck would pay 250 EU for a 8 year old laptop? You could find a Mac cheaper than that, fucking hell.

I work at a place were they take apart electronics people have thrown away. I was looking around at the grates holding some of the dissembled computer hardware and saw the screen of a x200, broken.

Hey ThinkBros.

I've just set up FreeBSD 11.0 Current on my T530 (i7 quadcore with optimus intel + nvidia nvs 4500m gfx and 8 gb ram). It work great but one problem. You see, the two finger scroll, I have not found out how to make it work!

Any helping available?
>>
>>43310679
That's the sound of it dying, I've replaced quite a few of those. Thankfully they're cheap on ebay and easy to replace,

Open it up and give it a good cleaning and replace the paste so it'll toggle the fan less often to increase current lifespan as well as deal with your heat issues. If the fan dies it won't be able to boot as a safety precaution and you'll have to hit escape to ignore the prompt and prevent it from shutting down.

And remember to check out thinkwiki, lots of debian guides on there for that model.

Hello /g/entlemen, I made the mistake of buying a gayming loptop for ~$900 last year because I refused to listen to the cries and warnings of /g/. After selling it and saving up some extra dosh, I have about 1,300 dollars to spend on computers. I have about $700 set aside for a MicroATX build, and the rest for buying a thinkpad.

Now, here's my question to you;
I'm looking at two different ThinkPads, the x140e and the C720. The x140e caught my eye because:
-AMD APU
-<$500
-Built like a brick
-Matte screen
-Rave reviews

However, I was also looking at the c720 because:
-keyboard
-holy fuck that keyboard
-ibm thinkpad i.e. not shitty
-people will look at me funny
-maybe i could put in an ssd or upgrade the cpu or something

Should I shell out $600 dollars for an x140e with an SSD for light work and gaming, or a couple hundred for a C720 for light work in emacs, and maybe some Dwarf Fortress or OpenXCOM?

X220

I had two AMD laptops, and they were shit. almost literally all they can do well is fry your balls.

>Dwarf Fortress or OpenXCOM
DF is heavy on CPU, so 720 probably won't be enough to run that smoothly (That sounds weird in my head actually)

Something like x201 would be better choise I think.

My first ThinkPad (X200) is out for delivery. I've been thinking of putting Debian on it, but I may go with Arch if I can figure out the install process. Any other X200 users here? Does the wireless work without any configuring when installing Arch or Gentoo?
>>
>>43312858
You'll need to configure arch, thats the very nature of it. I would highly recommend using and sticking to Debian however. Arch is a fun learning OS, but for a daily driver you need a stable operating system and you really won't miss anything.
>>
>>43312903
I'll go with Debian, then. Thanks!
>>
>>43312903
I used Crunchbang as a daily driver for my x61t for quite a while, but Stable-branch repos are very old, I couldn't play ADOM natively in #! because glibc is old (one day I even broke my install completely by trying to update it). Moving to Sid repos doesn't really solved the problem, so I decided to move to ArchBang and so far I like it. But Arch is Arch, quite a bit of tinkering required to get it to work the way you want.
>>
>>43313196
I do admit, stable debian is quite old, but most people run testing. Testing is basically an ubuntu without the bloat and for day to day use is still stable. Sucks you ran into a problem like that though, #! is a great debian based distro.
>>
>>43313330
#! is basically a buggy Debian netinstall with openbox preinstalled...

chromebooks seem to win because they tout long battery life.

I'm guessing it means that it is BIOS locked to only use 4gb, but if you flash the BIOS with a new one then you can use 8gb.

If you set Windows up properly via the Lenovo Power Manager, and if you set up whatever Linux up properly with TLP, then they will be about the same.

OS X will probably perform badly and be missing features since hackintoshes are hackjobs and it's not made for non-Macs.

Not Thinkpad related are there any other Laptop brands that are upgradeable like Thinkpads. (In tearms like CPU, motherboard, non soldered GPU, bay HDD, screen exc.)

And it's totally a thinkpad. The keyboard looks different, but don't be fooled. It still runs hot, creaks, makes you look like a dork, has a shitty screen, and will be thoroughly deprecated by a macbook by the time its price drops from $2k for the best possible setup to $500.

Dell latitude is the closest line to the thinkpad, but they're generally worse and more expensive

They're posers trying to fit in to /g/.

Go look up AMT and mull over the possibility of backdoors and master keys in that. Then be delighted to learn that it only works with a set of "approved" wireless chipsets, and mull over the motivation behind locking thinkpad pci ports the fuck down

Is there anywhere I can buy these stickers that cover up the screws?

I'm guessing the previous owner lost one and replaced it with this slightly larger, glossy sticker and it bothers the SHIT out of me.

Also I want to try putting W8.1 on it, but no cd/dvd reader and I don't have a flash drive big enough. Is there any way I could do it via sticking the HDD in another machine or remote control?

I upgraded from a Toshiba Satellite L305 to a Thinkpad T60p. Since they're both 15.4 inch, vintage 2008 machines, I feel I can make some very fair comparisons.

The Thinkpad feels more physically solid. The plastic body of the Toshiba flexes perceptibly when it's picked up, and the screen wobbles slightly while typing. The Thinkpad's metal hinges stay just where the screen is adjusted, and the matte black rubberized lid does not attract a litany of fingerprints and smudges like the Toshiba's glossy plastic.

Typing on the Thinkpad is much, much, much better. This is the number one reason I chose the Thinkpad. Laptop keyboards are all terrible, and the Thinkpad is the best of a terrible lot. It's comparable in typing quality to a decent desktop rubber dome keyboard, and the Toshiba keyboard was a mushy nightmare. As a bonus, "mushy nightmare" is becoming the most popular keyboard style in the world because we live in an unjust and perverse universe.

My Thinkpad has a 1680x1050 screen, compared to the 1280x800 Toshiba. A downright frightening number of laptops still come in 1366x768 even today. Apparently I don't even have one of the "good" Thinkpads because I don't have the 1600x1200 IPS screen, but the screen I have suits me just fine - and makes me wonder why the FUCK every laptop in the world is now 16:9 aspect ratio EXCLUSIVELY.

And /g/ will frown on this but the T60p runs League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Minecraft quite handily and Skyrim somewhat poorly but still playable. The Intel graphics in the Toshiba couldn't really handle any of those. As far as I can tell those specific games are what most people buy $1000+ gaming laptops for so it's kind of amusing.

Sounds about right to me, thank you. How does the X200 perform? I'm not expecting a lot for it, but I need something for browsing the internet and word processing/spreadsheets on the go. Might try to run inkscape or virtual dj, not expecting anything on that end.
>>
>>43319315

Works fine, the most intensive stuff I've ever done with it is play videos and it can do that fine, has no issues playing high bitrate 1080p bluray rips

Only issue is if you're using linux you may have to hack a bit to get hardware h464 decoding depending on the distro, I run gentoo and had to manually edit the libva-intel-driver ebuild to use the g45-h264 git branch
>>
>>43319315
For web browsing, it's pretty good. You will probably want more ram than 1GB though. I have no experience with inkscape or virtual dj on it. I'm afraid that at the minute the most I've used it for is web browsing and compiling a few short FORTRAN programs. It can handle that ok.
