That is insane... I am having trouble finding thinkpads even close to the guide prices.
I get in bidding wars that go well over $100 over the thinkpad guide prices.

I am using a Lemote Yeelong, a netbook with a Loongson chip and a 9-inch display. This is my only computer, and I use it all the time. I chose it because I can run it with 100% free software even at the BIOS level.

/g/entlemen, a tragedy has occured..

My T420 is having boot issues. Whenever I turn it on, it gets to the thinkpad "thinkvantage" boot screen and the screen goes black and it goes into a loop.

I googled around and someone said to remove the RAM and listen for a beep. I did that, but I didn't hear any beeps.

Am I fucked or can I fix this?
>>
>>43250621

If you're running Windows post-XP than add the following to a text file and save it as .reg and you can set your unused Thinkvantage button to start the program of your choice:

Argh, my X220 is being delayed. The eBay seller isn't able to dispatch it until Monday 4th August. It's still the best deal I can get, though.

If I get one from the US it's "cheaper" but not once you factor in the import duty, and I'd also have to replace the keyboard with a UK one. And the market for Thinkpads is generally less good here in mainland Europe.

Life is suffering.

depends on the capacity. The charger will cost you at least $40 though, if you want one that won't become a housefire. A lot of the cheap laptop AC adapters on ebay are counterfit chinese pieces of shit and couldn't pass UL or CEE standards. Ever.

>>
>>43251739
Possibly. And it may very well catch on fire. Using a cheap power adapter with a laptop has the same risks as using a cheap power supply with a desktop PC.

Lol, no don't sorry. When I got my x200 a couple of years ago I ordered 2 cheap chinese $7 chargers. One for the office and one for my home.

Both have had no issues up to this very day.

I don't know why anyone would spend $40 on a charger for a laptop that cost almost as much.
>>
>>43251537
Can't complain at that price. But it's more of a collectible rather than a useful machine at this point
>>

Any further comments? Would it last if I take care of it? I had terrible experiences with Packard Bell/Acer (I know, I know) and I don't want to be into for a world of pain.

I am afraid of laptops ever since, but building my own desktop seems unlikely since I might be travelling every three-six months during a long time.

Forgive me, but I don't know what that means when talking about a laptop.

It is supposed to use the intel HD graphics when not under heavy use and the AMD when doing stuff like gayming and such.

I understand is a suboptimal solution, but I would very much desire to hear about a laptop with the aforementioned requirements that is somehow affordable.
>>
>>43252715
The only good Latitudes are the main E6000 series or the E7000 series if you want a well built business ultrabook. Any other latitudes aren't good at all.
>>
>>43252963
The alternative I was considering is the Asus G750JX or G750JH but I don't think my family would approve the budget for that. Though it is on /g/'s wiki and seems a good laptop. I don't really care that is heavy as hell.

What I really need is a good computer that doesn't need disassembly and air freight cargo every time I change my location (you know how the job market is these days).

It would mean the world to me right now (not even exaggerating) to find a sure bet. My great fear regarding laptops and the hit or miss nature of buying one really makes me uncomfortable, since it's a great purchase in terms of money and compromise.

eurofag here, looking into selling my T400.
It has a 1440x900 dispay, switchable graphics and relatively standard specs otherwise (2,4GHz, 4GB RAM, 320 GB HDD). It also has an Ultrabay adapter and comes with the docking station.

How much can I expect to get for this?

I guess that everything boils down to how much I am willing to spend. Price doesn't matter to me as long it is durable. If I can have a good laptop that survives 10 years I would buy it in a blink.

This being the scenario, would I be all right with an E6k or E7k Latitude? What are your thoughts on the Asus (G750JX or G750JH)? Seems sturdy.

So recently I just got a refurb T420s running 100GB SSD and 8GB RAM for $450. I'm running Debian Wheezy with LXDE on it and it only holds like 3 hours of battery life. Is this normal? Many reviews criticized the battery life on T420S but all of them say it holds at least for 5 hours.

You do realize that about 70% of consumers buy shitty chargers for their laptop because they are not willing to pay $80 for their charger.
There are loads of these things online, they have a bigger chance of getting a virus than a powersupply blowing up.

Even the non-oem batteries I have don't overcharge and blow up when they are dead, they simply do not charge at all.

>>43251964

Yes it will, that battery will also take all your information left nt he laptop because it isn't an OEM product, cops will be coming to take your CP you have saved on there.

No anon, it will be fine, worst thing is that they degrade faster than non oem ones, that being said, the best OEM battery is a panasonic one, not sony or sanyo... Seriously, do not give a fuck if you saved money, buy another cheap battery when it bites the dust.

>>43260525
First off, enthusiasts and /g/ do not care for the later laptops that much. with that being said, an X230 will probably be a great canidate for you, it has a full sized keyboard as well.
Check ebay's sold listings for the X230 so you can ballpark what you should pay for one.
Keep in mind you are paying a little bit more for its "ruggedness" and some lack in performance around this price range, anyways, some still can be under lenovo warranty in case anything goes bad.

>>43261126
Depends, but yeah, that is wayy too much, maybe $140 for a R61 and thats me being generous.

>>43264879
No, fingertouch (which was called multitouch) was only offered in the XGA units.
X200's seem to have more fingertouch but they are in WXGA only, do not be confused with a WXGA+ screen of the X201s, there were only a few select models.

X61T has an SXGA+ screen and suffers from 'bubbles' I have one but I've been lucky, when i bought it, it had only 3, but its slowly eating away from the taskbar so it doesn't affect me much. Also it suffers from "sparkles" making the screen somewhat hard to read at times and is somewhat irritating to me.

There was a mod from an X230 that went to a WUXGA screen, but it required soldiering skills and precision at that...

Lastly there is no tablet X240, I do not know how Yoga's are but they have better res screens I think...

Just get an android tablet with a gud screen.

I got one of those micro usb to mini usb cables for like $3 from china and I was able to type on a Nexus 7 1 gen.

Kinda funny that CTRL C and V work, page up and down...

I have a 755CE that I dissasembled long ago and I may never use it due to me losing the screws and never having the correct charger. I am lazy about it.
I think a Poker II keyboard can fit in there with minor modification to the frame, hopefully a dremel too will work. The dimensions seem to match.
Dat trackpoint tho, I know, it wont fit, maybe getting a USB ThinkPad keyboard may work, not sure, but a bluetooth mouse can connect to Androids.

Yeah. Find a few that aren't overpriced and monitor them. Open in multiple tabs, don't use watch. Watch listed items will show up as recommended for others. You want to keep the machine low profile. And snipe with your highest affordable price during last 10-15 seconds. If you lost it, go for next one. Use a timer to help you monitor the auction ending time.

Alternatively you can use a program to do the sniping for you but that'd require you to give them your log in credentials.

Personally I use a mixture of both, I use a program to help me monitor easily but I snipe manually so I don't have to give my credentials away.

Get an x201 or better. You won't regret it

Why is the w520 a pos? Isn't it the most powerful and best designed "old school" ThinkPad?
>>
>>43266120

It does have a very lovely keyboard.

>>43269607

lack of notification lights, 16:9, not as durable as older models, expresscard slot not fullwidth, runs like shit (though that's partially the fault of an aging windows install more than anything)

Still, it's what I've got and it does what it needs to do, even if it is a little lacking.

So I just got my first thinkpad, a T410, and damn I'm liking a lot more than I thought I would. I was nervous buying this thing secondhand, but this thing is pretty much flawless. Also, the 1400x900 16:10 panel is glorious, so much better than 1366x768.

As far as I know:
>You can swap the screens on some of them for slightly higher resolution ones. For example, the X200 can be fitted with an X201s screen.
>You can always wrap it in a vinyl wrap to change the color. (3M Scotchguard 1080 is a good choice. Some tripfag around here always posts his with a carbon fiber kind, there's other colors and finishes.)
>You can swap out the trackpoint for other colors.
>You can program the ThinkVantage button to any other function you want.
>I think they sell form fitted palm rests for them
>Rubber keyboard covers are easy to find

I'm still hunting for something interesting to do with the PCI slot occupied by the pre-installed broadband card. It's not the same card with the

Going with the Asus G750 is going to be pricey, but I am not really going to spend my money anywhere else, so it might be even cheap in the long run. The one I have right now has been a nuisance since the second year.

T61 was dropped in my hands. 07/11 6460-7EU nvidya model. dusty as fuck, still works.

question for NV T61 owners if there are any left or even previous owners: ever shim your GPU? I understand it's popular to do amongst the other brands of machines with them and they do sell shim kits for those, but never was there a kit for a T61 since that's direct-to-heatsink contact, albeit low pressure. so the obvious question is, why not up the pressure with a shim as I've done in the past in my D830?

Also, anyone have any experience with replacement T61 hinges on eBay?

My country doesn't sell any FRU parts

except batteries
Do /g/ have any idea about this?
should I asking the sellers ship to my country?

>>43249877
Where does /g/ buy their chink batteries from? Ebay? Any trusted sellers?

Would like the largest possible one for my T400 (AFAIK 7800mAh), but ordered one that claimed to be such but was in fact lower capacity and completely unreliable (100 to 60 percent might take two hours, 60 to 0 might happen in 20 minutes).

>>43249877
They are great, however there are other great brands too, like Apple and Dell Latitude.

got this for my T500 about a month ago; it's doing great. http://www.ebay.com/itm/400635076574 seller is reputable.

So witch older Thinkpad had good screen?
I hear that most are crappy or ad least decent.
>>
>>43269526
I had a few of em, nice and small, durable and almost as small as a netbook but with decent performance.
Only problem is the right palmrest, WiFi card gets hot, replacing it needs the middleton bios so it FETs rod of the WiFi whitelist.

Most 15" 4:3 T-Series ThinkPads had IPS screens
so when buying if they are SXGA+ or UXGA, you got wide viewing angles and a clear display.
So T40-T60, there was no IPS option since the T61 until the current gen.

I think the A30 was the first ThinkPad to sport an IPS screen.
A31p comes with a UXGA screen.
They are big, since made of plastic and older than the T4x they are thicker

All X-series tablets have IPS, but until the X220 they are hard to see if outdoors

The non-godtier displays, T23 and T30 had been outfitted with SXGA+ screens.
W500, T61p and Z61p seem to have nice WUXGA displays, but so!e are equipped with WSXGA+ which are decent.
An X201S can be outfitted with a WXGA+ screen
X300/301 came with one too, the later being LED backlit.

>old old
770Z had a 5:4 SVGA display, one of the few laptops to have a high vertical space ratio. Its heaver and thicker than my A31p too, yet has a 11 or 13 inch screen.
701Cs has a shitty screen compared to the 701C
600 seems to be built like a tank, dunno screen wise
755CV had a sweet lid as it would come off and one would be able to use an overhead projector to display its screen onto a wall.
Stay away from the i-series ThinkPads... unless there's a 1124 nearby, let me know

I don't know much else, the second display of the W70*ds isn't too great compared to its 17" WUXGA screen
>>
Is it normal for the screen to become less bright over time? Using a T61.

You can get better battery life off the S version, and the X200/s are undervolt capable unlike the 201.
