My son is 13 years old and smart for his age. But he can be a big short sighted and rushed into things.
He wants to "make a game or animation". Yesterday he downloaded a trial of Adobe Flash, but I discouraged him from learning that since it's a program that's on it's way out.
I suggested maybe he should learn HTML and then HTML5, but he feels like that would take too long. He really just wants to jump straight in and see some results.
He has:
- Made a minecraft server on his own for him and his friends to play
- Completed all the Codecademy courses on Javascript and enjoyed it.
But this week he wants to animate something. What program do you recommend?

Anyway, regarding the topic at hand - a minecraft server and codeacademy are really just handholding him, tell him that if he wants to make something decent he should take time and actually get into it. If you find a nice way that takes a while to learn, convince him to do it anyway instead of just giving up.

We're digital, but the animators who have "grown up" on digital are extremely shitty and their animations look all rigid, because they're used to just, for example, selecting an arm and rotating it, instead of actually redrawing the arm for each frame, which encourages adding nuance to the motion since you're redrawing it anyway.

HTML5 engines are actually very easy to use. I've never used flash, but I've used several engines and HTML5 is by far the simplest, and I don't think it'll be dead any time soon.
Look up Panda.js. It's in javascript, so it should be relatively familiar (it's also free).
