X201 or X220?

Light, quiet, cool temps, and long battery life are the most important aspects here. No external display will be used.

X220 has the IPS display that's great to look at, but gets white spots, and is a shitty 16:9 1366x768. However it does have the newer processor, and the juicy slice battery.

X201 has 16:10, but it's 1280x800. TN iirc, so it will be dimmer. Also apparently it heats up pretty well, and won't be as battery efficient. It is however $200 cheaper as a whole, and supposedly has better build quality.

I'm going to be running Xubuntu, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, or Crunchbang on it almost exclusively. The most resource intensive thing I'll be running is going to be a win8 VM, and Eclipse for android development.

I had made up my mind earlier about getting the x220, but someone in a previous thread suggested the x201 will be more enjoyable. I'm coming from a T61, so either of them is going to be a downgrade in resolution.

Anyone ever use both?
>>

I have an X200 and an X230. You probably want the newer processor, much better battery life, ability to use a mSATA SSD and IPS screen of the X220, but I'd get a dock and another monitor if you want to use an IDE on it. In my experience the major problem with the screen is not white spots but image retention.

I posted this in the last thread, but then I passed out.

I've been here before, when I was having issues with my T60p's GPU overheating.

I used the copper penny trick with AS5.

Anyways, it was running pretty hot recently, so I cleaned it with alcohol and applied new thermal gel, still AS5.

I've also done something I can't remember that allows me to set the fan at full speed with
echo level disengaged | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
.

Still,
cat /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal
gives:

temperatures: 82 54 44 94 50 -128 40 -128 51 67 71 -128 -128 -128 -128 -128

Apparently, the 4th is the GPU, which shuts itself off at 100. It's no longer better than the 94-96 I had yesterday, but what's wrong?

Did I possibly wear my already probably tired fan out? Should I invest in a new one? How much should I expect to pay for one if I should? Could someone recommend a seller if I should?

The penny is indeed pre-1982 and thusly copper.

Using a T400 with Gentoo as my main computer, it's pretty good. I bought it refurbished for $400 for some reason. I don't know what they refurbished exactly, it has a scratch on the screen and the Core 2 Duo sticker was replaced with a Centrino sticker. Got an SSD, it's nice. Overall very good even if I could have got it a lot cheaper.
>tfw no coreboot support
>>
>>43120759
Also, it's a digitizer, not a stylus.

Styluses are just sticks, digitizers have batteries in them that enable the use of buttons and pressure sensitivity.

Also since it is Wacom based, you can use several other Wacom digitizers that are much better when it comes to pressure sensitivity, if you're into drawing.

Please respond. Is there any good place to go for modding T60 series Thinkpads? It's the 16:10 model, by the way.
>>
>>43120821
There is no battery with wacom. It's powered by some coils under the display.
Likewise though, you can't use too many wacom pens with it. The Intuos line's pens for example is incompatible.
>>
>>43122162
>The Intuos line's pens for example is incompatible.
Wacom uses different frequencies or something for their own products and OEMs. HP, Samsung (including Note phones) and ThinkPad are all intercompatible, but not compatible with Wacom branded devices.
>>
>>43113709
Whelp, now it's time to look for what connection went wrong.
Hm... I suppose I should write a little bit of troubleshooting too, since it's probably unreasonable to expect perfect assembly first try.
If you're still here, can you post your closeup assembly pic from before? Failing anything obvious to spot, I can list the voltages you should see at each connection...
The usual problem, actually, is either a bad connection to surface mount or accidentally breaking one of the surface mount components :-( But aside from being annoying, it's the worst case.
>>
>>43122162
>>43122254
It's not a universally true statement.

And there are indeed Wacom branded devices that can user interchangeable pens. I know for a fact there are a few Cintiq pens that work.

I don't know how Wacom pens work exactly, I just know there are some that work and others that just don't for unknown reasons. The only consistent thing I found was that non-display device pens (such as bamboo and intuos) will not work with Tablet PC's and drawing tablets with displays built in.

Otherwise, it's kind of a lottery. Some Cintiq pens work, some other Tablet PC pens work, such as the Fujitsu Lifebooks, etc. etc.
>>
Anyone else with a tablet have issues with rotation under linux? I get pretty bad tearing, and the screen dimensions don't seem to rotate with it so I have huge fonts from the messed up PPI
>>
>>43110270

>clean unstained panties

Get that fresh pair of shit out of here and come back with the real stuff
>>
>>43122373
As far I'm aware, the wacom implementation in tablet PCs is a relatively old technology related to the UD. As such, pens from other tablet computing devices with wacom digitisers are compatible. As for the cintiq, that's another can of worms but the guess is that it's something related to such.
N-trig pens don't work for obvious reasons though.
>>

I love my x220 tablet, but I wish I got the x200 or x201 instead. The reason I went with the 220 was because I thought I wanted a trackpad, but after about a week of using it I disabled the trackpad in the bios.
>>
So I decided I really want to get an x220, problem is I currently live in China. Now I could potentially wait until I'm back in Vancouver for a bit next month to buy one on Craigslist but there's no guarantee one will be available. I could also buy one online here in China. Sadly the batteries of my point and shoot just died so I can't take pics right now. My phone has a potato camera (pic related) Should be charged in a couple of hours.
I can post some old pics but a couple of connections have been redone since then to cut down the size and to replace the smd cap I broke while filing the board down. I think it would help other anons a fair deal if you updated the board modding page to mention the size constraints in more detail, preferably at the point the board is as bare as it gets. Other than that it's great really.

X220 owner here, still running windoze, haven't bothered to try to into linux since my last experiment with installing OpenSUSE on an eMachines D725, which ended in vain since I couldn't get anything to work to my liking, couldn't even load websites without getting disconnected (this was with wired ethernet)

What exactly does it mean by "Thinkpads have good linux compatibility"? Does this mean that all my stuff like wifi drivers will work with linux right out of the box without need for manually installing drivers?

I'm planning to get an mSATA SSD for my X220 some time in the future and install #! on it, and I don't want to have to fiddle with shit just to get it working right, I want it to just werk so I can start fiddling with how the god damn file system works, and then get to ricing or something.

I'll recheck the solder joints now. There were some sketchy places but I think I fixed them up well enough. As for the voltages, I only have a shitty $1 chink DMM on me at the moment but it should do fine for troubleshooting.

>>43125006
>I think it would help other anons a fair deal if you updated the board modding page to mention the size constraints in more detail, preferably at the point the board is as bare as it gets. Other than that it's great really.
Yeah. I winced when I realized there was a millimeter that needed to go to fit it into the non-tablet. I had tested all the board builds on bare motherboards, and the Tablet had tons of space-- didn't check the X61regular clearnces carefully enough until it was time to take pics.
>>43125140

seems like linux might be outside your comfort zone kid. crunchbang and debian don't have proprietary drivers, which means you're more than likely going to have to manually install wifi drivers. stuff like mint and ubuntu usually work out of the box though, and you can install openbox on them so you can look super cool with your anime wallpaper!!!

if /g/ really knew as much about linux as they want you to think, they would realize that distros such as arch or gentoo offer nothing over ubuntu and its derivatives. go with xubuntu if you're too scared of "bloat" on your $200 processor and 500GB hdd

No, I'm just saying that when you're setting up the more hands on distros there will often be times where you try something and it doesn't work. Once you get them set up they're great distros and I personally enjoy the troubleshooting but just because the majority of the people here feel the need to prove themselves with their leet hacking skills doesn't mean you should feel bad about using whatever distro or even OS you want.

Take Arch for instance. Once you get through the fairly long install process (which I actually recommend you do sometime, teaches you a lot about linux) you're greeted by a blinking terminal. No GUI, no preinstalled apps. Anything you want you need to get yourself. For a lot of people, including me, this is great because I WANT to choose everything I use. However for a first time linux user who doesn't sound too into doing stuff the hard way I really don't recommend it. Also you mentioned Crunchbang which I haven't used myself but it basically comes prericed.

I will, x201 is the last 16:10 one which makes it the last one worth buying
>>
>>43128729
it's probably negligible unless you're an autist but you have to consider that they were a lot cheaper than the previous models when new and also more compact. you're probably going to sacrifice some build quality. the keyboard is fine.
>>
>>43128729
It really depends on how far you're willing to take it. The manufacturers of the keyboards didn't change. But the heat concerning the double height escape and delete keys is the major pivot. Although a the key shape and gap change may be a point of debate.
It is however certain that such a point was when the type of plastic used was changed. The previous iterations took longer to show wear. Although I recall the lead designer spinning this change in plastic to indicate the individual user's habits.
>>
>>43128729
Insert was shifted to the left, to make room for a double height Delete. Esc is also double height, but now it is in the correct position. A hit and a miss, if this is good or bad, that's your call.

You can't compare a 200€ laptop with one of >500€. When I bought my ultrabook for some months ago, for less than 900€ you couldn't get a FHD screen.
How do you use a 200€ laptop? VMs, Eclipse, ST with multiple opened files, multiple browsers with multiple tabs, music, several random open apps...

>>43130011
The thing is a used Thinkpad isn't a cheap laptop, it's a very expensive laptop that is bought old and second hand.

For instance with the T6x you're paying a hundred bucks for a product that some guy seven years ago paid two or three thousand dollars for. Over time HDs get too small, processors get too slow but build quality is build quality.

A big part of this is that it seems like CPU, RAM and HDs become obsolete a LOT slower these days. Is a Core 2 Duo, 3GB of RAM and 160GB of storage bad? A little bit. But it's not a 386 with 640k, you know what I mean? Hardware from the last couple generations lasts ridiculously long and I'm not entirely sure why.
>>

>Hardware from the last couple generations lasts ridiculously long and I'm not entirely sure why.

It's been decided that the masses shouldnt own processing power anymore. Computation power is moving in to the cloud instead, where anyone other than us controls it.

They can't just raid houses to confiscate cpus and gpus, so generally available processing power is being phased out by drying up advances on the consumer side and dumping everything in to "cloud".
>>
>>43131218
