The ThinkPad is a T23 and it's running Ubuntu 10.04. Nothing like using a 12 year old ThinkPad with a four year old OS as a main machine.

Yes. I've been trying hard to pick out a pair of speakers for months. I really want something with nice wood cabinets which is hard to find at desktop-friendly sizes.

Nah. It's a very primitive TrackPoint II which is sluggish and there's no center button for scrolling. Might be nice for vintage computing, but I don't find it usable for modern computing.

Modern internet browsing on this machine takes a little patience. Everything else is quite responsive. I do miss the ability to play 720p video which is a complete impossibility on the Pentium III.
I also ran Ubuntu 10.04 on my T42 before switching to the T23 and it worked great on that machine. Lubuntu is probably a good choice for the T43. I don't have a whole lot of experience with "lighter" distros (just Ubuntu/Xubuntu for me) but I don't think you'll need to worry about stripping anything down for the T43 unless you just want it to be more barebones.

Yeah it's a rMBP 15" sitting in a Twelve South stand. I'm not too fussed by the speakers, I usually use headphones (always forget to include them in my photos though) so it's not that much of a pressing issue for me.
