Hello there /g/entlemen.

I'm changing jobs and my new employer is giving me $2000 maximum for hardware, laptop really.

My first thought was to get a thinkpad from the X series, since they are small and handy. And back in the day I absolutely adored my X40.

But then I saw that every single one has a screen that can do only 1366x768. That's fucking pathetic.

So what small laptop with decent screen resolution can I get for max $2000? If any?

If I can't then i guess I'll just have to add to this business out of my own pocket to get something good.
>>
Get a T440s.

It's god tier and the best you can get for 2k.
>>
>>43021636

I hate to say it, but Alienware. You can get a good Alienware for about $1,500.
>>
>>43021636
You already know the answer. You just think it's too obvious.

> 1600 x 900

I guess that's better.

But I just found this Toshiba Portégé Z30-A-15M

>Intel® Core™ i7-4500U 2x 1,9-3,0GHz
>16GB RAM
>SSD 256GB
>13,3" Full HD 1,920 x 1,080

Looks really cool too.

I wonder how's the build quality.

>>43021798

>Alienware
Oh god please no.

13" Retina MacBook Pro
>>
>>43021835
You can get FHD on a T440s
>>
>>43021848

I actually did consider it. And especially since I just intend to install Linux on it.

Still, a MacBook... I'm really conflicted.
>>

Can I? I'll have to look around more, thanks for pointing that out!

I know man, it's ridiculous.

That 2014 razer blade looks pretty epic. All except for that god fucking aweful razer logo.

I'll check it out.

What do /g/entlemen think about ThinkPad X1 Carbon?

Looks neat. 14" and with 1600x900, which is decent.

Errr, why is this even a question?
15" Macbook Pro, add windows or linux as you feel

or if portability seems to be the aim,
13" macbook air with 12hour batery life

Anyway, if you are hardcore anti apple, why is 1366x768 on 12" screen a problem? DPI on that is most likely better than what you are on niow
>>
>>43021938

I'm not hardcore anti-apple, just don't like apple. I simply prefer thinkpads. Their looks, their build. The fact that you can get a decent dock for them is pretty important for me too.

You can't get a dock for a macbook air or pro as far as I know.
>>
>>43021865
Driver support is actually really good for Macbooks for Linux since there are few pieces of Apple hardware but many users for this hardware.
>>
>>43021986
but retina support is not that great
KDE and QT are fine, but non native applications are fucked up
>>
>>43021986

I've heard as much.

I'm looking at them and all i'm seeing in my part of the world are ones with 1440 x 900 on my budget. That's not much better than 1366x768. But then again almost anything is better than that.
>>
>>43021979
>dock
The only docking you'll be doing after buying a Mac is cock-docking
>>
>>43021979
Get a used chinkpad and spend the rest on a desktop PC.
>>
>>43022065

You just had to make that joke didn't you?

I chuckled.
>>
>>43021636

Dude you answer. 15" retina mbp.

Solid hardware, solid software. Try not to swallow too much liberal cum and you should get away with it.
>>
>>43022067

Don't need a desktop PC. I already have a very good one. I need a good laptop I can easily carry around when going to clients.

I'm more and more convinced that T440s might really be the best option at the moment.

Thank you /g/entlemen, you really know best.
>>
>>43022088

It does look nice. I think I'd have to get my hands on one and try it out to make a decision though.

MacBooks aren't very popular where I live. I rarely encounter them in the wild.
>>
>My first thought was to get a thinkpad from the X series, since they are small and handy. And back in the day I absolutely adored my X40.

>But then I saw that every single one has a screen that can do only 1366x768. That's fucking pathetic.

X240 goes up to 1920x1080 while the X1 Carbon is 2560x1440. I'd go for the Surface Pro 3 or MBPr 13.3" though.

>spend money on other stuff
>>
>>43022198

At what fucking price? I haven't seen one with that kind of resolutions.

>>43022215

1. Don't have a laptop.
2. They don't just give me cash. I pick the hardware, they pay. Can't pick weed instead of something that I will use for work.
>>
>>43022098
If you can live with a lower-res display get the X240, decent performance and the best battery life. If you shell out for a 9-cell you'll go literally days of usage.

If you're just going to clients' houses then why do you need a hi-res screen?
>>
>>43021986
Wouldn't installing linux considerably cut battery life on a macbook?
>>
>>43022246

>If you're just going to clients' houses then why do you need a hi-res screen?

Because it's nice to have.

But anon in >>43022198 said there are ones with higher resolution, so i might as well add some from my own pocket and get one like that.
>>
>>43021636
HP elitebooks and Dell Latitudes are the only good new business laptops. I don't specifically know about their screen resolutions, but they're much better than the comparable new thinkpads.
>>
>>43022215
>Hey anon, why don't you ever use your new laptop that you bought?
>Oh I like to keep it at home, keep it safe you know.
>Well we bought it for company use, so you should bring it in and use it here where you're supposed to.
>Oh okay, will do
>Kind of funny it worked out to be exactly $2000, huh?
>Yeah, it took a lot of planning haha
>And while you're at it, don't forget to send me an invoice for it, it needs to have an authorized receipt or we can't reimburse you, okay? It will have to come out of your paycheck.
>Oh yeah, totally forgot, sorry.
>Okay have a nice day anon, don't forget to bring that computer into work tomorrow!
>>
>>43022237
2560x1440 X1 Carbon seem to be starting at $1,349 while the 1920x1080 X240 starts at $1,389 on Lenovo Store. You can probably find a better deal elsewhere though.

Well, looks like prices in shops located where I live are considerably higher.

But thanks for the info. Buying it like that might be a better option.

I'm going to bed now, thanks a lot /g/. You all were very helpful, have a great night/day/whatever.
>>
>>43022424
Does this mean I can use an X1 Carbon 2560x1440 screen on my t420?
>>
>>43021865
I was in a very similar situation with the same budget earlier this week and got the 13in rMBP. Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure that the MPBs are about to get a refresh so I'd wait if possible for that. I made the mistake of just buying it anyways because (for autism reasons) the money was only on the table for the month. Anyways I really enjoy the laptop and would recommend it.

>>
>>43021636
Theirs 2 thinkpads with displays above 1080p (might be 3)

the new carbon has a 1440p display, and one of the T series has a some random resolution.
>>
>>43021636
>But then I saw that every single one has a screen that can do only 1366x768. That's fucking pathetic.

You know, you could like

Get a docking station for the laptop

and then get an external monitor or two, which even the integrated graphics can power up to two 4k monitors via DisplayPort

then you could use a mouse too, and proper keyboard

also would suggest getting a second charger and just leave it at home

docking stations are great, you will never have to plug anything in ever again, I use one at home since I use my laptop as my main computer
>>
>>43025145
That should never excuse having shitty 1366x766 resolution on a laptop. It looks really awful.

4K may be overkill for a tiny laptop screen, but 1920x1080 should be the standard.
