The stock wi-fi card does not work in Mavericks, so I bought a new one
It doesn't match the BIOS whitelist so the laptop won't start

The kernel is the engine of the operating system. Linux isn't better so much as it's more efficient in the way that it manages applications and their supporting files..

Its as easy as some games in a package I'm downloading and my antivirus is complaining about some of the files, though I am pretty sure there are no actual viruses but I still intend to remove all the files my antivirus is complaining about just to be sure. The pack is 212gb and only a few of the games are getting complaints. My torrent client gets an error whenever my antivirus removes a "threat" and stops downloading so I have temporarily added the destination folder to the exception list in the antivirus while its downloading. I was just wondering if this is safe.

No, they're not being executed.

A lot of times the AV is being tricked. The file is not downloaded sequentially with bittorrent.

In short, the new data is mixed with old data "deleted" from your hard drive. The antivirus software assumes it's complete and correct (and this can make a perfectly legitimate file look like a virus). It's basically being tricked.

Do not trust it's decision until the file is FULLY downloaded. Also, virustotal.com

Thanks, that's good news I guess. It's almost 6 years old. That would explain why when I shut the machine down, the monitor abruptly stops with a raw horizontal white line somewhere in the middle. This never happened to me under Windows however, both Win7 and Vista, only loonix.

Is there a way to make linux not turn on and off twice? When I hit the power button, the diodes turn on for a second, the fan whirrs up for a bit and then it shuts down, no backlight, no BIOS, nothing. After 4-5 seconds it starts to boot up normally. Something similar is when I shut down. When it's exiting the DE/WM the monitor shuts off, only to light up again with sort of a frozen screenshot of the last moment of X before issuing the shutdown command. Is this common? So far I've tried only two distros - Mint and Manjaro, and it's the same with both of them.

and it persists after I've finished, and no longer am down or up loading. and shut down the program.

resetting the router cures this.

...diodes...most call them LED's. Though both are technically correct :)
My desktop does that. Though it's only when the power has been cut completely (power outage, or power supply hard switch was flipped).

I don't know at all. ACPI docs might help.

uh...Check your hard drive, and the connections.

If it's a newer processor you can try using the power manager and setting the max processor speed to 99% (with a processor that supports turbo boost 100% turns on turbo boost, at 99% it's just the max without turbo boost). My laptop would randomly shut off due to turbo boost. Install and watch Speedfan.

If it's the latter, then cleaning and reapplying good thermal paste may help.

Dunno if my question ever got answered because I had personal stuff I had to attend to so I'm going to ask the short version.

How the fuck do I configured Trinity Desktop Environment's tarballs using cmake in Kubuntu 14.04?
>>
>>42987661
If your distro has them then thats all you'll need to do.
If it doesn't, then I would suggest looking around for a repo that's meant for your distro that has them. It's not terribly fun to install those drivers manually.

>>42987929
It's not.
There are FEW pieces of software that 99.99% of people shouldn't care about (Professional image manipulation, video editing and CAD work) that are Windows only, but that actually has nothing to do with the quality of Windows.
>>
>>42987938
it's funny though.
Professional level CG animation is done with OpenGL.
Professional level CG rendering is done on Linux servers......

But games and cad? Windows.
CG animating itself? Mac or Windows.

i'll bite. if you're still here...
A window manager, as the name implies, manages the windows of your open programs. It may have a few options & configs, but most are very basic, therefore very lightweight.
A DE will include a window manager, but also includes software to handle basic, typical tasks. For example, a DE will usually have an office suite (typically Libre Office), a browser, file manager, music & video player, text editor, programs to manage network & wifi, and little things like keyboard shortcuts (using things like brightness/volume shortcuts on a laptop, for example) in short, what you expect a modern desktop system to have.

WM's don't include any of that. So typically on most lighter distros, you have to add all of that stuff manually. And in a lot of cases you'll have to install your own network manager, wifi especially can be a bitch, and if you don't have another working computer nearby you might be fucked.

Here's the problem. I want good temps but it needs to be quiet too.

You'd think "just put AF140 fans everywhere besides the CPU Cooler" but some people say smaller fans aren't nosier (forgot why, think it was something like they can spin at lower rpms while still getting good temps or something)

and 'apparently' you 'need' fans with high static pressure if you want to pass air through the dust filters and mash grills and onto the components.

and how does my push/pull config look?
>>
>>42989811
it's the larger fans that are quieter because they can be used at lower RPMs while still maintaining a decent flow rate
configuration looks fine, though corsair is fucking expensive

I have two monitors, a Dell and an LG. They are in my bedroom, and so they need to be turned off when I sleep. Unfortunately, the LG uses capacitive buttons and the magnets in the speaker next to them seem to cause them to go haywire when I try to use them. If I don't try to use them it's not a problem, but whenever I touch one of them they start to press themselves randomly until I move my speakers. So, I need to turn my monitor off from the command line. In my old apartment I used
 xset s activate
and it would turn the LG off, but the Dell would show the "check inputs" message instead of going into power saving mode. Not a problem, since the buttons work on that one. In my new apartment, though, the monitors have been switched around left to right, and now the Dell goes into power saving mode and the LG shows the "check inputs" message. So, I have to move my speakers off of my desk every morning before I turn my monitor on. I may look into shielding the speakers somehow, but for now my question is this: How can I put multiple monitors into standby/power saving mode from the command line?
