I don't need ten seconds. You bought a consumer gaymen laptop. You'll have plenty of time to figure out why it was a bad buy.

Laptops like that are like a dog that constantly pisses on the carpet. Sure, you'll love it but you won't ever want another.

Here's an idea. Anything Lenovo that isn't in the Thinkpad line is utter shit! Even then, new Thinkpads are utter shit. Lenovo may be considered a quality laptop brand here, but only in certain product lines. (And even then, it's not a guarantee!)

Good luck with the equivalent of a Dell or HP brand laptop.

Why aren't there any good AMD Beema/mullins laptops? What the fuck are OEMs doing?

How come I can get a decent tablet with an 1080p IPS panel for $200 yet can't get a laptop with AMD's ultra low end parts even though they should cost about as much as the ARM parts.
>>
>>42984103
ebay. Search for a compatible panel used in a sister model rather than a replacement to get 1920x1080... e.g. E540.
Do your research before attempting a screen swap in case your graphics can't handle it properly/there's a hardware compatibility issue.

Mullins is supposed to be on par with Baytrail in power consumption while performing notably better. Even when AMD had a big lead with Bobcat and Jaguar, before Baytrail came out, OEMs just didn't make very many AMD devices despite the fact that the old Atom was literally dogshit

Actually, I've went through the trouble to try to use a 1080p compatible panel for my e545, however it simply refused the display when connected.

I even did a ballsy 'hotswap' between the 768 panel with the 1080 panel while it was powered, and it displayed but was distorted. I don't believe the cable can carry the higher signal, and the same connector is also carrying the webcam video and mic audio.

It's not worth the hassle, and in the process I ruined the original video connector and damaged my old screen, (they weren't kidding about the DO NOT TOUCH film cover over the circuitboard).

My stock model replacement screen is on it's way, however I felt I needed to at least attempt a higher res screen.

Buying a macbook air/pro is a decent hardware choice even if you're gonna install debian or any linux distro on it afterwards. It's a decent choice for the price and hardware. Hating on apple products as a blanket assertion specifically made sense like 4-5 years ago, but now it doesn't

OP, I'm not here to ridicule you on your purchase, but I will share my experiences with "gaming" laptops.

Build a nice desktop. They last for years longer than a laptop will and they're often tenfold more powerful for an equivalent price. Check out logicalincrements.com and do some heavy research on what will meet your needs.

~$1000 on a "gaming" laptop will only end in disappointment for you, just like it did for me. Spend a little less and get something more powerful, then save a little for a laptop/ ultrabook that you can take with you. Remember that you don't need something that's powerful AND portable. Just enough to get you through class.

I have Y510p SLI variant. I replaced HDD to SSD and it's a very good pc, very good.

There is only one problem: it's not a laptop. Battery life is total shit, it's heavy and thick.

I would be much better off buying something light and thin with built-in gpu.
>>
>>42986855
That's one of the problems I ran into with my y570p. I realized too late why they used such awful awful plastic in the construction of the computer: because it was never meant to be moved.

Laptops shouldn't be powerful, and realistically they can't be without being the size of one of the MSI Behemoths and still using "gimped" hardware. It's a sad truth.

>>42986802
Glad you were satisfied. If I can spare even one other person the frustration of trying to use a Lenovo Y-series computer as anything but a desktop replacement then I've done my part.

>>42986772
I agree. I've bought Inspirons and Studio laptops and they break after 1 or 2 years. I've had an e6220 for 2 years and dropped it a few times. It is still going strong. Very sturdy and metal hinges are great. I love the Latitude line.
pic related e7240
>>
>>42986952
The latitude series of computers is top notch. I've got a spare I've been pushing around for 5 years and it's still as study as when it was purchased.

Computers made for enterprise applications will almost always survive longer than a similarly specced "consumer grade" computer. Many will argue that they're all the same but from anecdotal evidence and personal experience I can say enterprise computers are built to last, even if they will all be junked every three-year refresh.
>>
>>42986905
Also thanks for the link, I've been trying to design a PC build for over a year but I personally don't know the quality of parts. There were so many to choose from and so many reviews to skim.. It became a chore I didn't enjoy. I figured I'd cop-out and buy a laptop capable of doing light gaming (Civ5, minecraft, CSS, other steam games) and also be able to replace my current 10 year old desktop which is just starting to give me trouble.

I didn't buy the y510p yet, I figured more people would be critical or supportive if it was final and not up for debate which one I was buying. Thanks for being not shitty!
>>
>>42987028
No problem. I love this board but so many people are always angry about whatever is being discussed. Perhaps I'm the fool for coming here for informative and polite discussion.

Logicalincrements is what taught me the basics a while back, and I've just now been researching newer hardware as it's time for an upgrade. A combination of LI and a site called pcpartpicker.com will save you a bundle of cash on both components and tylenol for the install/ build headaches you WON'T be getting.
>>
>>42987028
Buy whatever is in your price range. But one recommendation is you should definitely by an SSD. That is the single biggest upgrade you can make.
>>
>>42987126

Happy to help.

The new Pentium 20th Anniversary edition (g3258) is a decent starting place for a low to mid range gaming computer if you're looking to do a budget power build. Not to mention it's socket 1150 so you can upgrade to a much more powerful processor in the future.

As for the rest you've just got to research. Tedious? Yes. Worth it? Of course.

Rather the opposite, since even the shittiest mobile processors are pretty strong now for general purposes, you can just get the cheapest laptop with the good build quality and an FHD screen.

Awesome. I have a Mid-2013 MBA with an i5 and 8 GB RAM and it was the perfect machine for this past year, when I was a CS freshman. Its awesome battery life was really useful, and not having to run a different terminal client for shelling into the school servers was very useful. I kinda regret not getting the 13" rMBP, though; the screen on the MBA is good, but not great, and I think I'd be willing to sacrifice the extra battery life for an awesome screen.

You got to be realistic. At a budget of $500, that's already amazing considering the competition are shitty consumer laptops (i.e. Acer Aspire, Toshiba Satellite) or consumer-grade "business" laptops i.e. (Latitude 3-series, ThinkPad Edge).

Half the week I'm at home studying and the other half I'm away 'cause of work.
That's why I'm looking at the top-notch shit now, if I can play Skyrim/EU/Civ with it then I won't need to upgrade v. much and as far as battery life goes, I don't need it to have good battery life for /gaming/ away from power, just notetaking and such.

So I ask again, better to get a 17-inch one for gaming/work and a lighter one for uni, or the 14-inch I can use for all three?
>>

I'd probably get something more versatile then. If you're that busy you don't need max settings on everything, do you?

Look to those Asus Zenbooks >>42992847 the 15 incher should be powerful enough.

I read the OP you dumb cunt, that's why I was asking.

You can't just put your fucking fingers in your ears when you get criticized or your decisions are questioned. It's part of being an adult.

>for that price you could have built of desktop
ya because im gonna take my desktop and monitor to class with me XDDDDDDDD

fucking dumbass
>>
>>42993327
Not him, but having a capable desktop at home and a lighter laptop on the go is optimal as opposed to a laptop for doing both.

I was thinking about something from ibuypower.

True, doesn't everyone knock Asus around here though?
And price isn't really too much of an issue (I can split it with work) but thanks for the input about versatility.

>tfw you work away from home so a desktop is useless
life are suffering, anon
>>
>>42993351
isn't there a lenovo y-class that is 17-inch?

just get that
>>
>>42993327
I've been to university, I had a laptop, I would have much preferred a desktop. And just some shitty

You don't need to take a laptop to class. You learn and retain information better through the act of writing physically.

In terms of group projects, yes, a laptop is good, especially for studying in the library, but you don't need a £999 machine to take notes on.

I don't think you're going to make it, anon.

Generally speaking Asus makes some decent and even great products, but they have to appeal to a large segment of the market, so they do put out some products that are absolute shit.

You have no time at all to spend on the computer at home? Even the fact that my desktop is hooked up to everything (receiver, mouse, keyboard, monitor etc.), so I can use it right away and don't have to hook everything up when I come home makes it worth it.
>>
>>42993418
oh, great arguments dude!

i see we're done here

>No time to spend on the computer at home
Naw, that's what I mean ;_;''
I work construction on a decently large project so now and for the foreseeable future (1.5-2 years) I spend the first half of my week at home, which really means at uni classes, studying at uni or at home, and working at my company office. The other half of the week is when I have my free time at night, but I'm also living away from home because it's located a good 3 hours from where I go to uni (and accommodation isn't permanent so I can't keep a desktop there or anything).

Thanks for the Asus tip, I'll check it out!

don't listen to this retard

unless you have a mini itx, bringing a desktop to collge is a huge pain in the dick. the dorms are small as fuck and there's nowhere to put it

My college makes students buy a laptop that they load with all the software they will need. So this is what I'm going to have shortly.

Standing up for your purchases is the worst thing you can do. When you make a bad purchase, you need to suck it up and admit it, learn from it, and warn others. Don't be a fanboy.

Case in point: I bought a mechanical keyboard. It's pretty nice and all, but not worth the money. Don't get one.
>>
>>42993505
I just keep the desktop under my bed and run the video out and peripherals to my desk.
>>
>>42993919
>but not worth the money
That is unless you buy a Model M at $50-$60 or so, which is very much worth the cost.
>>
>people buying macbooks
>these things couldn't even feature a hole, for a kensington lock
>can't even just leave it on my desk at work

This is what convinces me that only faggots buy macbooks for facebooking and noone does any work on it.

Or maybe you can work your way up to a big boy job where you don't have to lock your shit to your cubicle, (I assume cubicle as most of us with real jobs have office doors...)
>>
>>42994727

Because everyone here has his own office.

And we should ALL be having our own offices because this world really needs nothing more than 7bil CEOs.

Stop acting like you have a job.

Yup. Integrated GPU's are actually pretty powerful nowadays. I can run almost any game on low at native resolution and get about 100-110 fps with my i5 4200m w/ HD 4600 graphics. Obviously if you care about graphical fidelity, than iGPU's aren't for you, but I really don't mind.
>>
>>42994727

>bigboyjob
>I have such an important job I never have to go anywhere, I don't have meetings, I just sit in my basement room - i mean office all day so I don't need to lock down my especially expensive laptop

Please

>at native resolution
This better not be fucking 1366x768.
