I know. I was at Build. The point of being able to run WinRT-based apps on the Desktop is for regular laptops (especially non-touch laptops) and desktop computers. This is so that you don't have to leave the Desktop on machines where it is not suited to leave the Desktop. This was primarily motivated by having MS move all the basic OS apps (e.g. Mail, Photos, Calculator) to the WinRT runtime rather than Win32, while allowing these applications to feel 'at home' on the Desktop.

Aero and whatever the fuck the Win8 UI is called are compositing. Your GPU is keeping track of what the windows look like when they're obscured rather than only drawing them when visible. This makes for a smoother experience while taking some load of the CPU. Classic theme saves a bit of RAM and does all window drawing with the CPU.
Which will be faster depends some on your hardware, but anything remotely modern will generally be faster with Aero.

Mac OS threads, at the right time, can be pretty level-headed and helpful, to be fair. Though even in OS X threads, there's only really two camps - those on Snow Leopard, or those on Mavericks. I think most people will agree that Windows 8/8.1 doesn't really bring much to make it worth installing on an existing machine. What happens if you click "all apps"? Does it stays within that menu or does it open metro?
To be honest metro is way better than this, it feels something inbetween that doesn't really bring anything good.

I am so frustrated with Windows 8 and now even more with 8.1 that I have to start taking meds or something. I guess it's good that Washington has legalized marijuana - maybe, that's how Microsoft went from Windows 7 the best operating system ever to Windows H8. I don't WANT everything I click on full screen - I want to multi task. I don't want my stuff hidden a way until I wave my mouse over the "magic spot" in the corner or who knows where. It took me about 30 minutes the first time I opened up a PDF document and tried to figure out how to print the damn thing! So I heard that there was so much outcry about losing the start button that 8.1 was going to bring it back. I've been too busy to read up on it (should I have to?) and was pissed off to discover that the start button in Windows 8.1 just takes me back to the very screen I hate in the first place! And why are you making it so hard for me to be an Administrator on my own computer. I do NOT need to have have my friggin OS tell me that I don't have permission to do stuff! During the update process to 8.1 on my work computer I was FORCED to log in with my personal Microsoft ID to continue - I just wanted to use a local user ID. At least I could do that in Windows 8. I don't have a work Microsoft ID - just my personal one. I don't NEED a Microsoft ID for work. I don't WANT a Microsoft ID for my work computer. I just want a local login. So I try to disconnect my Live ID after I get it updated and it asks for a user name and password, so I put in the same one as I had in 8 because that's the one

I need on my workgroup on all of my computers to make sharing easy. "That user name is already in use" - WTF? I just want to disconnect my MS Live ID - not create a new user. Please don't ever get in to designing or building cars! If I wanted to open the hood to check the oil on my Microsoft car I would have to wave my hand over some magic spot on the dash to get the hood to pop - and then I would get denied permission from the car to pull the dipstick out! I bought Windows PRO for Christ's sake! Let me turn off the start screen. Let me manage my user accounts and assign permissions without hassle. Please for the love of all that is holy, let me tell my OS that my PC is NOT A TABLET and does not have a touch screen! I keep seeing this flipping message on the side that insists that I swipe from the side of my screen to go back to the last program or window - swiping my mouse doesn't work and this unwanted pesky little helper is getting in my way covering stuff up! It's like having an annoying assistant that when I ask for something, I get a smile and a "Guess which hand it's in? C'mon, guess! Nope, not that one, try the other!" Just fork it over! I don't want to hunt for the damn print button when I'm looking at photos! Windows 7 was (and still is) the best OS ever. FSX was great, but MS Flight was an idiotic disaster.
