Let's have a thread about great Lignux applications that are all too often overlooked. I'll start.

KKEdit: A great alternative to gEdit with less cruft, that keeps the classic gtk2 gui.
- http://gnomefiles.org/content/show.php?content=158161

Clam Chordata: Displays the chords of any song you feed it in real time. Super useful for learning songs that you can't find proper tabs or sheet music for anywhere.

I-Nex: Essentially CPU-Z for Lignux.

Xiphos: Great Sword-based biblical text tool.

Pithos: A lightweight Pandora radio client. Best on any platform I've seen.

ULMAC: An audio converter and auto-tagger for people with large collections of live music recordings.

Skippy-XD: Like Expose, but for lightweight Lignux DEs like Xfce and LXDE / LXQt.

Easytag is a really good music taggin application.

Vitetris is a fun terminal game.

urxvtd is not really a single program, but not many people use it, it is a deamon for urxvt, so new urxvt windows spawn faster and use less memory.

mpd+ncmpcpp, nor really obscure but whatever, best music setup ever.

mpv, same, but just the best video player
>>
>>42906160
>mpd+ncmpcpp, nor really obscure but whatever, best music setup ever.
That's an half true. It's shit for people who just want to listen to music. You need to configure it (a fucking music player!!) in order to do basic tasks.
Almost nobody use the most advanced features such as listening to music remotely.
>>
>>42906205
eh, it is also good fot "just listening" to music, it uses almost no resources, you can controll mpd with a dozen of clients, or just use keystrokes. and it doesn't lag when searching through big (10000+ songs) music libraries.

More:

FVWM, very good and old/stable window manager, yet almost noone uses it (in destkop threads at least). It's also ultra configurable.

MVWM - https://github.com/ThomasAdam/mvwm ,a project by the developer of FVWM, cleaning the code base, and adding modern stuff, I build it myself and it works perfectly.

Nobody uses it because its built in features are ass and it's heavily deprecated by openbox, which doesn't even need configuration to be usable.

>RANGER

Fucking no fucking shit fuck shit

Let me tell you about the flaws of ranger

>Does not respect system mime type associations
>Uses python builtins for all operations instead of shell utilities so everything is fucking slow
>Python is not multithreaded and never will be. One large operation will drag the entire file manager down.
>You want basic shit like archive management? There's a plugin for that. And extracting may or may not work all of the time. Sometimes, it'll just hang near the end. Great.
>Only does tabs. No drag and drop, no split views for different active dirs.
>Image previews only work in certain terminals, don't work in tmux, and are not cached

Ranger is a great example of software written with all of the wrong tools (python, curses, w3m) that would actually be less bloated and harmful if it were done with GTK
>>
>>42906043
i-nex seems neat, but it downloads a lot of dependencies across a million repos

every time you launch it i opens up the i-nex site along with the tool

cpu-g, a simple python program, seems to do the same stuff but be far less bloated

Because nobody using linux actually gives a flying fuck about this. Calligra Flow is pretty cool. People looking for something like Visio might like it. At the very least, it's better then LibreOffice Draw for these things. It also has a good selection of stencils, including pretty much every networking device (using Cisco standard iconography).
https://www.calligra.org/flow/

Fish Shell. A more interactive shell. If you rarely use your terminal, and don't want to go about configuring zsh and plugins - it's a friendly alternative that makes those trips a little easier.
http://fishshell.com/

Krusader is an MC-style file manager for KDE. Dolphin is plenty capable, but if you prefer an orthodox file manager, you don't neccessarily have to restrict yourself to the command line.
http://www.krusader.org/

SFLPhone is a Qt (or GTK) SIP and IAX softphone. Of course most people don't need a softphone - but those that do typically end up using a piece of shit like Linphone, or install something else like Ekiga. I'd argue it's the best Qt softphone, but I can't actually think of another one right now.
http://sflphone.org/

Finally there is puddletag. A good Qt music file tag editor in the vein of Mp3tag (spreadsheet-style). The closest thing KDE and Qt have to Easytag. Unless you can work out JuK or Kid3.

Redhat is the only name in linux
Systemd is its only init and yum is its package manager
Anything that works on one redhat based system will work on another
Redhat is funded by multiple corporations and sees real use on desktops and servers

But then the evil jew shuttleworth snatched up debian, a shit distro for hobbyists and poorfags, and created ubuntu. "I will fracture linux and make my own OS! Fuck redhat!" said the kike, and so he tried

When his programmers wrote patches, upstream did not receive them, and when upstream wanted them, they were too bad to accept. When wayland was made, he started incompatible mir. His only loss? Switching to systemd, because upstart was too much work to maintain

But fear not, ubuntu will die, and then there will only be one linux with more than 100 years

Redhat.

Meanwhile Microsoft is pissing around with four different versions of their operating system, with vast incompatibilities between each, including an entirely different non-backwards-compatible application architecture for Win 8+, and now two versions of DirectX that come with the subtitle "When we said we 'support' Windows 7 - we mean you should go buy Windows 8".

But that's just what's on the top layer of shit - this is the company that created a standard that says we need to treat 1900 as a leap year, despite what reality says. The company that made an audio subsystem that managed to kill network throughput when active. If they can do that much, they must be working with some tagliatelle-tier internal design.

Run FAR AWAY from any work that requires Microsoft Office. Just because it's used, doesn't mean it's not terrible and frustrating. Work done with it is also inherently boring.

The fact that people CARE what operating system someone uses is ridiculously idiotic. Its a simple case of "stop liking what I don't like". The fact the people go out of their way to make infographics like that is just crazy. Some people use their OS for an ideological reason, some use theirs for convenience, some use theirs because thats all they know, but in the end, everybody just uses the os they WANT to use, it is autistic to have a problem with that. Also arguing that closed-source=higher quality is baseless.

- Straight up not true, but even if you invest 10 minutes into learning how to use said terminal then you'll find everything becomes /easier/
- And? Use free alternatives
- Your anecdotal experience != truth
- Your anecdotal experience != truth
- WINE is pretty shit, but if you're in a tight spot and the stars align correctly in can be handy
- Dell ships devices with Ubuntu. Enough said
>a device designed to lock me into a particular vendor's products doesn't work with other products
- True. Someone should get on that
- Drivers are built into the kernel, and device support is pretty solid nowadays. And having many distros is a benefit, its not that complicated particularly compared to the benefits they bring
- Again, untrue. See pic from http://www.techrepublic.com/article/open-source-vs-proprietary/
- See above. If you think people are too stupid to learn a basic syntax in about 30 seconds of reading then you severely underestimate people. Not to mention that CLI is the simplest and, in my opinion at least, most efficient UI form there is
- See above. Package format fragmentation might be a pain, but if you're talking about people too stupid to learn bash then they don't care
- Kernel exploits, security vulnerabilities? Compare CVE lists between Windows and Linux. Viruses? Low market share means less attention, plus open development practices lessen the threat posed by zero days and the tradition of breaking otherwise large, monolithic applications into ones that "do one thing and do it well" reduces attack surface. And most modern filesystems in widespread use on Linux desktops don't fragment at all (excluding near-full scenarios), particularly compared to FSs like the abysmal NTFS and FAT which fragment like the respective bitches they are
