I agree with this. I can see the use for openbsd when running servers, but as a desktop, no. With a practical approach to security, even a windows 95 system that's not been updated for years would beat openbsd in protecting data. Since my approach to security is practical, I have no need for all the nice security features openbsd offers(desktop related). As previously mentioned, it is by far the most secure system for servers connected to the internet. I use it for that, but I am not acting smug about it or feeling superior to people who run linux servers. Like OP does

>mfw my first computer had windows 98
>mfw i installed linux on it when i was 9 years old and never switched back

KDE 1 was the shit, man. It was much superior to Windows 98, I was impressed by how good it actually was. Only thing that bothered me was the task bar separated from the main menu bar.

Fuck, I miss having to partition the disc using fdisk because my autism didn't like something in the "graphical" (ncurses-like) partitioner.

My first distro was Conectiva Linux, which would be later be bought by MandrakeSoft and become Mandriva Linux. I remember installing it in a friend's friend's computer, he actually liked it all his Windows games worked on Wine.

Then when Mandriva stopped getting updates, I kept switching between openSUSE and Fedora, the former being my favourite for its stability, availability of packages and ease of use, until I finally stuck to it. I have never needed to use a command line for system maintenance on openSUSE. Never ever.

I have tried BSDs, Solaris, Ubanto, but found nothing interesting on them. I even tried a hackintosh but failed.

I bought a business class laptop that came with Gentoo once (actually my sister bought it and I borrowed it sometimes becuase I only had a hueg 17 inch laptop that didn't fit in my bag), it just worked so I couldn't be bothered to install openSUSE. Until I needed to install something and it took ages compiling just to fail in the end. Fuck Gentoo and fuck the retards at Itautec who decided it would be a good idea to sell business laptops with Gentoo preinstalled.

So, why should I install your BSD shit, OP?

An install script would be nice
Good for you, install KDE components without the massive meta package and see it break when 5 hits... It's a matter of just because something hasn't gone wrong for you doesn't mean it can't/hasn't for other people... The poor dependency resolution in pacman makes it even more likely to cause issues with updates. True, you can use it for years with no problem, I'm glad you have.
True, but at least unofficial repos can be integrated into the actual package manager in most.

people bitch about the install but it's easy as pie.

the annoying thing about arch is that they test little and shit is often buggy.

just for shits and giggles, compare /r/ubuntu with /r/archlinux

not to say ubuntu doesn't have some issues either, but not rolling release type issues.

too new libs, forgotten pacnews, broken aur packages. shit's annoying when you depend on stuff to work. and yea, some of this is easily fixed, but it's about time and knowhow.

it's an awesome distro though, but these days i prefer something ootb, since you can do the same shit on any distro.

check out antergos, which seems to be the pefect blend. nice ootb setup with vanilla arch. i've yet to do a metal trial but in a vm it's nice so far.

well i wouldn't say it's poor dependency handling, as pacman seems to be great at removing dependencies, but the fact that the maintainers like to keep very lean dependencies. so if it's not required to work, it's an optdepends. this this often becomes annoying when you need to install another bunch of packages by hand to get the expected functionality.

Possibly. I suppose that is inevitable in a distro that follows such a stringent philosophy rather than looks at users needs and adapts to them. I just didn't like having a package work properly/pull everything it should have to get proper functionality maybe 65% of the time as opposed to 100%.

great logic there. why did microsoft create powershell if the gui is so amaze?

i guess they were tired of being the dumb kid on the block with cmd.

anyone who has every done any technical work (programming/sysadmin) knows a terminal is efficient, fast, and worthwhile to learn.

if you can't see that fact, then fuck off. powershell may be acceptable for windongles, but the fact is that linux and osx both support posix.

it's for server administration, anger management. there's a whole lot of windows servers out there in the wild of enterprise that can be neatly and cleanly administered through the same interface and scripting. fyi windows production servers don't have gui's.
>>

>great logic there. why did microsoft create powershell if the gui is so amaze?
Because they wanted to create something more advanced for the automation of tasks.
Gui is still the fastest way for a single configuration task.
Powershell is for stuff that needs to be done by schedule.
>just because windows got the software first doesn't mean it's going to be that way for the rest of eternity.
As long as the loonix guis stay as shitty as they are the average user won't use them. And until then software will still come to windows first.

Nope. Never ever. Even big companies use mainly active directory to manage their windows boxes. Windows VDI is used pretty often and sharepoint gets more and more common too.
>>
ubuntu does get a lot of flack for being unstable, and i think it's largely due to them still working on unity. the derivatives are pretty damn stable.

i like unity, but i'm worried about how mir and driver support. plus, i'm excited for wayland.
>>
>>42888002
stability, better maintained repos, init or systemd over upstart, freedom

it's a preference thing, debian will always be my first linux love
>>
>>42888037
But Unity is good though. At least if you want to get work done. Real people with REAL jobs don't use tiling window managers like i3
>>
>>42887630
>Confirmed for never using PowewrShell.

Not that guy but use Powershell at work.

You really ahve no idea what you're talking about. Powershell is an utter pile of shit, the syntax is utterly horrible because Microsoft wants everything To.Be.Typed.Dot.Net.Style and doesn't know how to intelligently handle executable paths. Everything is way too long, it's easy enough to read but hell to type because every script has an ungodly long name. It's clearly designed to be copied and pasted from MSDN rather than typed from scratch.

>>42886065
You do know that most serious users either use Windows, Scientific Linux, Debian, RHEL or Ubuntu right? In fact Ubuntu is kicking serious arse in the server/dev space at the moment, it turns out driver support, stability and up to date packages are desired features.

We even have a mysql installation on a windows server vm because the license service for the software runs on windows only.
>>
>>42888073

By 2012, €6.8 million had been saved on Microsoft licensing alone.

damn u espensive
>>
>>42888105
Well that depends on the field the company works in I guess. We do electrical and electronical servicing for industrial companys like oil refineries. Both are highly dependent on proprietary stuff that runs on windows.

If the company mainly uses self developed software I guess linux is more common because of license issues.
>>
OP I have, this is why I run OS X.

>>42886099
You don't need a functional computer?
>>
>>42888078
I don't know, it is easier if you're not familiar with the programs involved but it still doesn't necessarily tell you what it's going to do. It also has some good features like being able to whatif changes but if the syntax is horrible, difficult to type quickly and overly verbose that's a pretty damning weakness.

Imagine if you had a word processor that randomly inserted NIGGER KIKE 14/88 HITLER DID NOTHING WRONG into documents, all of the nice features on the world wouldn't make proofreading everything several times any less annoying.

well, i haven't had any reason to use windows in a couple of years, but for the random times to do something i boot up a vm and put it in seamless mode.
