Hey guys, I've got this one here. It's pretty alright, I edited it as best I can.

a.pomf.se/laryob.zip

Here's the problem... I REALLY just want a nice looking, fluid search bar, maybe with some sort of nice animation. The one provided is copy/pasted from bits of something else and is just horribly hideous. Can anyone fix this up and get a nice search bar in there for me, please?

Appreciate it to anyone that does this, thanks!

You mean two markup languages and a style sheet? That's not technology, that's fucking graphic design. Cars are designed with computers, should we allow car threads? Food recipes are posted online, should we allow food threads? This thread is a glorified wallpaper thread.

I hope the mods should delete it too.
And all those battlestations and screenshot threads.
>>
>>42663097
In all seriousness though, if you don't like the threads then why bother looking through them? There's enough contribution in them to justify them being kept around, although this homescreen thread has pretty much been derailed. That and a lot of the people recently have just been rehashing other people's homepages instead of creating their own.

>>
>>42663194
You aren't contributing anything to this fucking technology board.

People say the same shit when there was only desktop threads on /g/. Everyone ignored them. Now look at what we have.
>battlestation

And whatever the fuck general threads.
Oh, did I mention there must be at least 3 of each operating at the same time?
>>
>>42663139
Not if it's just circle-jerking. There's been 3 posts in this thread. Why can't you just post in the safe confines of desktop threads? There is no reason for you to make a different thread.

>Don't need porn

someone make one using google paper / material design
>>
>>42663234
I'm not even going to bother, there's obviously split opinions on this. Some people like it, so let them have it, it's the same for a lot of threads.
>>42663250
This thread has definitely been a flunk, I haven't been on /g/ in a couple of weeks but when I was posting in homepage threads then there was plenty going on. A different thread is justified if enough people are in it, but with the quality of this thread I'm going to assume these won't be happening very often in the future.

Finally got the goddamn text to vertically center.

Click the location text to change it.
Hovering over the icons on the right pops up more detailed info. Clicking them leads to the weather website's relevant page.
Custom search box uses bang keywords to auto-switch to one of eight sites.
Clicking the search icon clears the input box.

I still have some cleanup work to do on it as well as implement my random favicon code. Background color is undoubtedly going to change and more content will be added in the future.

Speccy/Battlestation/dragon dildo threads don't have anywhere else to go.

Whereas this, Homescreen threads, and desktop threads are perfect for /w///wg/, and even exist over there.

Does THERE IS A BETTER BOARD FOR THIS not penetrate your thick skull?

If there were a /bs/ board, I would tell battlestation posters to go over there, but there isn't so they have to stay here.
>>
>>42665871
>>>>/wg/5822944
Battlestations thread so they can go to /wg/ now.
>>
>>42665871

No, the best board for this is /g/, because /w///wg/ does not stand for CSS/HTML learning.

Homepages are pure CSS/HTML learning, which are technologies.

/g/ = stands for technology, not for gay.

Maybe you should leave.
>>
>>42665941
Homepages are primarily about customization/rice, not HTML/CSS/JS. They certainly use that to achieve their goal, but it's not their primary goal.

/w/ and /wg/ are boards dedicated to wallpapers and customization/ricing. There are already desktop threads, homescreen threads, and battlestation threads over there. On rare occasions, you see homepage threads as well.

By your logic, we could merge /gd/ with /g/, because Adobe Illustrator is a technology. Sure, it's used to achieve the goals of the people over there, but it's not their primary focus at all.

You'd have to be delusional if you think that HTML/CSS/JS are the primary focus over here. You can look at the code, but it's not what gets discussed. It's more about sharing ideas and designs, read: FUCKING RICE.
>>
I love how these threads always turn into a retard party arguing over their existence. Stay spergy, /g/.

Homepage is great, but I cannot fully switch the engine to duckduckgo. Because of this I cannot use the bangs, so I can't do something like "!gssl Taco" to return taco via encrypted google search... It's quite irritating. Not too fond of it. Maybe you can make a button somewhere that switches between two settings on the search bar, Setting 1 being what it is now displaying results as it is, and Setting 2 being a regular searchbar taking you to the results out-of-page.

People are sharing code, reusing elements from it and creating new stuff to share.

It would literally take minutes to write that. I teeny tiny fraction of the time you spent waiting for a reply.
>>
>>42671370
I will share you my program that can only run in my own JS interpreter.

Check every 1 hour, where hour is 60 minutes, and where minutes is 60 seconds, and where seconds are 1000 ms, if the current hour of the time is between 8 and 19, replace document class "night" with "day", otherwise replace document class "day" with "night".
>>
>>42671370
Do something along the lines of:
var today=new Date();
var h=today.getHours();

if(h > 21){
document.write("night");
}
else if(h < 5){
document.write("night");
}
else{
document.write("day");
}

How would I use that?
I use the jQuery/FeedEk script to fetch all RSS things, so I'll be using it anyways.

If there'd be a more general solution to fetching RSS things which is completely native and wouldn't require a library, I'd happily switch to it, if it wouldn't be too much of an effort.

This is untested vanilla js, but you could probably use it like this:
var comic = null;
var req = new XMLHttpRequest();
req.responseType = "json";
req.open("GET", "http://xkcd.com/614/info.0.json", false);

req.onreadystatechange = function() {
if(req.readyState===4&&req.status===200) {
comic = response;
}
}

req.send(null);

the comic var will have all the info you need to display the latest comic

wait that's the wrong json file, this is the right one: http://xkcd.com/info.0.json

Anyone now how to prevent the contenteditable attribute set to true on an element fucking up the drag&drop behavior of the whole page?
say I got a page without said attribute I can drag a image file into the browser and it opens fine. As soon as I have any element with the attribute set to true I cannot drag and drop into the page anywhere but into the editable element and the instead of opening the image as before it includes it on the page. It is driving me mad.

>>42673985

you can drop this in your
</head>
part and should work

it does 4 times of the day but you can edit it down to 2 times a day if you want day-night
youll just have to make the css names for when you want them to appear...pretty straight forward

<script>
<!--
function getStylesheet() {
var currentTime = new Date().getHours();
if (0 <= currentTime&&currentTime < 5) {
document.write("<link rel='stylesheet' href='night.css' type='text/css'>");
}
if (5 <= currentTime&&currentTime < 11) {
document.write("<link rel='stylesheet' href='morning.css' type='text/css'>");
}
if (11 <= currentTime&&currentTime < 16) {
document.write("<link rel='stylesheet' href='evening.css' type='text/css'>");
}
if (16 <= currentTime&&currentTime < 22) {
document.write("<link rel='stylesheet' href='afternoon.css' type='text/css'>");
}
if (22 <= currentTime&&currentTime <= 24) {
document.write("<link rel='stylesheet' href='night.css' type='text/css'>");
}
}

getStylesheet();
-->
</script>

Cleanup work is finished but there's no visual difference. All images are now loaded from sprites sheets and the page is fully functional.

Favicon is randomly selected from a spritesheet.
Click the location text to change it.
Hovering over the icons on the right pops up more detailed info. Clicking them leads to the weather website's relevant page.
Custom search box uses bang keywords to auto-switch to one of eight sites.
Clicking the search icon clears the input box.

Background color is undoubtedly going to change when the page is properly styled and more content will be added in the future.

Haven't you learned about switches or if else yet?

if(currentTime < 5) { // 0-4
// night
} else if(currentTime < 11) { // 5-10
// morning
} // ...

And no need to repeat the document.write so much, find the css you want and use it as a variable. Much cleaner.

>>
>>42674349
You might as well do it right from the beginning and save yourself the trouble of having to re-learn it all later.
>>
>>42674337
basically the short story is
webpages are file formats called .html right? you know that much correct?

inside these .html files are html coding depending on how you want your webpage to look so we use html coding to customize how we want our homepage to appear.

easiest way TO LEARN is to look at someones pre-made (make a copy of the original and play with the copy version) one and just change things around and pay attention to "what does what" thats the best way to learn
>>
>>42674337
Change it to the file in the settings menu of your browser.

>>42674405
Another tip I used when learning is to never copy paste code. When you're learning it's best to write every line of code yourself. Even if you are copying line by line, the act of typing out the code will help you remember the different functions. Also if you write something wrong, and get an error it will help you debug errors which is one of the most important things.
>>
>tfw a single typo wrecks your whole page and it takes you a half hour to find it
>>
>>42674466
i can fully support this does make sense but if you have a good memory youll know what you need to do or what to write or what comes next especially not forgetting punctuation ive had a few times where i forgot a . ; or " and i had to go line by line for 25 mins to find where it broke
>>
>>42674547
This. Fucking CSS. Miss one semicolon and shit just breaks.
>>
>>42674466
>>42674605
Usually the best way to find these types of errors is to look at the syntax highlighting. If there is a sudden change in the color of a block of text then you might have missed a closing bracket.

Also Firebug. I use firebug at least 200 times a day. It's a life saver.
>>
>>42659266
