I think it's actually fairly cheap when you look at software like Maya or Nuke's suite.
These are meant to be used by professionals working for businesses. Businesses that can throw around a million dollars like it's nothing. Larger businesses simply do not care much about $600, or even $4000. These are their selling points, so they adjust the price accordingly, similar issue is seen with nvidia's workstation GPUs for example, which are marked up very high.
By using it, even pirating it, you are supporting the software and it's creators. If you want to talk aout helping GIMP, then start actually using it. If you want to talk about supporting Kdenlive and Blender, then start actually using them (Not that anyone here even does 3D modeling or serious video editing).
