Hey /g/, my parts arrived! I thought I'd share the process of building my Steambox with you guys.
Enjoy the ride.

I chose to go with a low profile cooler because (as you will see later on) the stock cooler from AMD would've been too high.

The case I'm using is a Jonsbo V6. It looks like a speakerbox and fits very well into your living room environment.
The inside is very tiny so I will be packing things quite tight in there.

>>42199259
I needed a mITX FM2 board with WiFi. There aren't really that many to choose from and Gigabyte has been pretty good for me lately.
>>
Why no Z87?

Also, what was the budget?
>>
>>42199245
>APU Board with a dedicated GPU

Why. You should of bought either a lower end fx cpu and board or an intel board with an i3.

The mainboard in question is a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI. It wasn't very expensive (around 90 bucks).
This is also my first mITX build ever.

With the cooler mounted, the RAM has barely any room to breathe.

>>42199284
The budget was around 500 Euros to get sort of equivalent results with current gen consoles (XBone, PS4). We'll see about the benchmarks at a later date, since I'm currently downloading SteamOS.
>>42199286
Because I will be using this box from time to time with a windows hdd for LANs and to play BF3/4 so I had to get a rather juicy GPU. I was thinking about getting a APU only machine at first though.

And into the case it goes.
If you know how small mITX boards are, you can guess how little room there is inside this case.

Next up is installing a 650W PSU and connecting all the wires.
300W would've probably been enough, but this was available for only 5 Euros more than the 300W, so I thought wtf why not.
>>
>>42199283

>>42199344
I had (and still have) concerns about that. I'll see in the long run if this was a good idea or not.
>>42199354
No. You'd have to get the mini version of a GPU or a GTX 750 sized card. It does have space for two-slot cards though so thickness shouldn't be a problem.

One more thing.
Just to show you how little room there is between the PSU and the CPU heatsink's fan.

>>42199414
The case has a dedicated bracket for 3.5" HDDs. The bracket would be installed next to the GPU on the side, so it would basically block the airflow for the GPU.
This is the main reason I chose to use a SSD with this build.

>>
Can you only run DRM-fucked Steam games on SteamOS?
>>
>>42199578
It's Debian, so you can install what you like, but Steam has the sandbox install process down better than most real package managers
>>
>>42199578
No. In theory you could run the normal Debian desktop, install Desura and even games from the Humble Bundle.
>>
What is the point of something being a steam box as opposed to being a computer that runs steam games?
>>
>>42199632
The point is a small case you can place in your living room that will not stand out with it's size or any weird gaymen designs.
You could also just get a NUC, glue it to the back of your TV and stream your games exclusively over LAN.
>>
>>42199652
That isn't really the question. This would be classified as an htpc and doesn't need to be related to steam at all.

People have been building htpcs for awhile now.
>>
>>42199671
If you want to argue semantics, then yes. This is basically a HTPC that runs a custom Linux distribution that will initialize the Steam Big Picture mode upon system start.
>>
why don't you install a real OS?
>cant play any good games on linux
>>
>>42199688
>If you want to argue semantics
Hey now, this is /g/. Get with the program.
>>
>>42199689
Since I can stream every game in my library to this machine, it doesn't matter what OS I put on there as long as you can install Steam on it.
Skyrim for example works wonderfully through LAN streaming.

Nice build, OP.

What's the performance like? Both gaming and thermal?

Also, could a somewhat larger GPU fit in there? How much space is left in the GPU slot?
>>
>>42200699
Thanks.
I can not provide any statements regarding performance and temperature yet. SteamOS is downloading with crappy speeds right now.
A larger GPU would fit, if it's length is not exceeding the 750 + around 5cm. Regular sized GPUs will not fit in this case which is why you'd probably not want to make this your main gaming rig.
>>
waiting to hear about the performance, op.

I finished installing the SteamOS to this box. So far it is working fantastic.
I tested Streaming (Batman Arkham Origins) as well as a natively installed game (The Swapper). Framerate of Batman was 60fps on ultra settings with a bit of screenjitter here and there. That is caused by my network (wifi, host has around 36MBit/s, Steambox 136MBit/s). Once I get a better wifi nic for my main rig, it should be fine.
There is one major problem however: the audio output is distorted and sounds like it is downsampled. Audio comes through HDMI. I will try analog audio later as well.

>>42201977
I had previously thought to use those, but the price of the 750ti was too tempting. I also wanted to stay inside the price level of XBone and PS4. A 760 would've crashed everything.
>>42202228
Thanks.
>>42202288
So far SteamOS works just fine. Of course it'd be easier to install flash and stuff on a regular debian install.
>>42202340
Streaming, mang. It works flawlessly if your network is up to the task.
>>42202365
Since I'll mainly be using that Box for Indiegames that have excellent controller support (e.g. Guacamelee), I'm using a XBox360 controller as subsitution.
>>42202394
Total price of the built was 553,65 Euro. Temps in BIOS are 36°C for CPU and 34°C for GPU. Pretty tolerable.
>>42202495
>>42202530
>>42202549
I wholeheartedly agree. I have a main rig in a FT02B case that serves me well for things like BF4, but when you just want to play some beat'em'up games with friends a Console is perfect; just get into your comfy couch with a controller and brawl.

Just ignore them. It's a nice build and you can use whatever OS you want on it anyway. What kind of temps do you get under high loads btw. I can imagine that this little thing might heat up after a while.
>>
>>42206524
I'll try tomorrow when some games have finished downloading and I got some more time for gaymen.
So far I'm really pleased with the results.
The audio hickups that I had are gone after turning my Steambox of for around an hour. Don't know what that was though so I think it's possible it will return sooner or later.

Not really, the PS4 costs 400€ in europe and the Xbone is 500€. Of course he has to deal with european prices, so you should compare them and not convert to USD. It's definitely in console territory when it comes to the price.

Crossfiring with the APU is also bad. In some cases it actually makes the performance worse.
That is if you can even get it to work. You have to have drivers for the exact combination you're using.
And we all know about AMD and drivers. No but jokes aside, the drivers do suck since they can't spend much time on them unlike their headline drivers,
