Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working onnmaking it feel the way you want it.

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Anyone successfully installed Eclipse Che on Windows?

The installer mentioned in some articles is non existent, the install documentation referenced in the readme goes to a 404, and if I already have Git for Win I don't see a reason to install Docker?

Anyone think of any reason to just not set up my own Linux VM instead of the VM Docker wants to create and run it there?

I was on a desktop thread months ago and I posted photos of my old RS232 terminal hooked to a headless linux PC. The morons thought it was a monitor even when I repeatedly told them it was a terminal. Some people just don't understand the finer things in life, and desktop thread people are generally those people.
Posted last thread but it's already saged.

>>52272553
Mint is ubuntu with a different desktop default and (I believe) no amazon.com spyware garbage pre-installed.

LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is based on Debian instead of Ubuntu and is what I used for a bit.

My chain of progress (first distro I used to last)

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy -> 9.10 Karmic -> 10.04 Lucid -> 12.10 (for a week, fuck unity) -> Mint with MATE desktop (14, "nadia" -> Linux Mint Debian Edition (I got bloody tired of needing to fresh install distros every few months, and it was based on Debian Testing's rolling-release system at that point instead of using 'update packs') -> true Debian testing (Jessie) -> Debian Sid. And I've been using sid for the last year and a half.

>>52272624
If you refuse to use the terminal AT ALL, you're going to have a bad time.

I got away without using a terminal for a while, because Ubuntu and Mint have GUI interfaces, but if you really want to do everything, you'll need a terminal. For example, some emulators are not in Ubuntu/Debian's package manager.

Hi /g/uys.
I'm arch user. After kernel upgrade to version 4.3.3-2 systemd still load 4.2.5-1. In /var/lib/modules i have only 4.3.3-2 modules, so old kernel cant load them.
I done this:

Most likely you have the systemd virus.

If this is arch:
/var is unmounted right after pivot_root into a tmpfs. Then systemd-shutdown is executed again and tries to unmount the already unmounted /var.

i'm not an anti-systemd-autist, but there is a point to be made against it for sure. now if i want a system without it i have to go to slack or the bsd people (not that that's a bad thing, i just really like debian).

also checkout runit by the void linux people. they're doing a lot of things right imo.
>>
>>52274241
That's wrong. Many things are done in sub processes. There are few things done in PID 1.
>>
>>52274197
SystemD is not system32 and it's not a virus. It was initially a system init (The scrolling text you see when booting is a system init) but SystemD is slowly becoming an omni-purpose tool for Linux. Some people aren't a fan. I have no opinion of it either way. If you somehow find a way to remove SystemD (assuming it is your system init) then you'll brick your system.

If all I am doing is coding assignments in c/c++ and java, writing documents, and internet browsing does it matter if the packages in LTS are "ancient"?

I like the idea of a rolling release (considering Arch or Sid), but I am afraid of something breaking. If my fear is something breaking then would I be better off with Manjaro since they hold off on adding things to their repos while still being a rolling release?
>>
>>52274288
manjaro is shit
I've used arch for years and it's never broken, don't fall for the old memes
>>
>>52274197
Systemd is like if system32 weren't necessary for windows to run but was a windows system service that served no purpose except to cause more problems and make boot more confusing than autoexec.bat.

It's like pulseaudio (Same lead programmer BTW)

>>52274241
You can always master your own debian installer DVD without systemd.
>>
>>52274261
well, yes, but...
this would actually go to far to lead anywhere in here. systemd bundles a lot of control within PID1, that's the point.
>>
>>52274334

>>
>>52274306

Are there any general tips to avoid breaking Arch? I have installed it on my T400, but I never cared about it breaking because I only web browse, but now I'm considering putting it on my workstation.

Comparing Sid and Arch, which is easier to maintain?
>>
>>52274435
I've never used sid, I've heard it's the one you actually have to worry about things breaking. As for arch, I haven't done anything special, just -Syu once a week and never had any problems.
>>
>>52274288
the answer to your question is no, it probably doesn't matter if packages are ancient.

sid isn't rolling release, sid is not really usable and not meant to be. if you want rolling release go for void linux (or arch, but i really like void). it has a nice installer, is stable, has a nice package manager, up to date everything, libressl by default, different DEs if you install from disk, the works.

if you want a system up and running quickly and you want it to be pretty fresh, right now i would recommend debian stretch (although jessie is also still very nice) or, if it has to be that way, ubuntu mate 15.04. once it's installed, just apt-get install build-essential and you're good to go.
>>
>>52274435
Subscribe to the Arch mailing list (or read news on archlinux.org). About once a month or two something will be posted there that probably deserves your attention. Might help prevent breakage.
I've been on Arch for over a year, nothing ever really broke.
>>
>>52274435
sid mailing list helps, reading changes before applying helps and there are two packages that list bugs with updates and such. debian testing is a good compromise.
>>
>>52274482
I never follow it and my OS never broke.
>>
>>52274435
arch.
arch arch arch.

don't use sid on your main machine. don't use it on your secondary one either. that's not what it's for. if you want debian - and i can absolutely recommend it, it really is a breeze in every way, endless packages, huge friendly community, problem solving made easy (although that largely also holds true for arch, i suppose) - go for testing.
>>
>>52274500
Yeah, Arch breaking is mostly a meme from years ago. Everything is pretty stable even if you don't go out of your way to be careful.

I've been kind of wondering how permissions work in Linux. From what I can gather in Windows, if you want to install some software, you need admin privileges, which basically grants that program access to your whole system whether it needs it or not. If it really wanted to, it could mess up everything.

What kind of restrictions does chmod give programs? What about things that are already installed like gedit or whatever. To modify system files, you need to use gedit in root mode. So I just really don't get it. If we assume some random source I've downloaded is malicious, what happens once I do chmod?

Also some place say
chmod a+rx
whereas others are just
chmod a+x
.

Is the (r) for reading absolutely any file on my system? If I don't give it (w) it can't change anything, but it could in theory just send all of my data to some nigerian warlord. Is that something to be concerned about?

I guess that's a lot of questions, I'm sure some of them are dumb, so just answer what you can be bothered to. And thanks.

You want all files to be at least readable usually.
>can you just give a program access to its own folder?
that's what android does. If you don't run as root (lets you read or write anywhere), programs obey the permissions from chmod. usually non-program system files have permissions like 644 (the 'user' that installed them, root, has r/w permissions, everyone else has read-only) for files, and 755 for directories (to change into a directory you need execute permissions).

system programs like your shell (often /bin/sh or /bin/bash) usually have 755 permissions so anyone can run them but only the owner (root usually) can overwrite them.

You don't want to give a program only access to its own directory (it wouldn't be able to access libraries it depends on or write its config file), but this could be done in chroots or by writing a program that you KNOW will be executed in such an environment.

As long as you aren't root and you are careful you'll be fine.

EMULATORS.
Most good emulators nowadays have linux ports. Certainly most open source ones do. Dolphin for Gamecube and Wii, mupen64plus for N64, Higan (bsnes) or snes9x for SNES, retroarch and the Genesis Plus GX core for genesis/master system games, gambatte for Game Boy/Game Boy Color games (the most accurate emulator, on par with BGB), or BGB in wine - the author cares about linux via wine support, though he refuses to opensource BGB or build a native linux version.
Also, nestopia 'undead' is a great NES emulator, and the crappy FCEUX (less cycle-accurate and has crappier color palette) has been ported as well. For GBA, there's visualboyadvance, of course, as well as its successors. desmume for NDS, Stella for atari 2600, the list goes on.

It still seems risky, even if I don't even really have any sensitive files in plaintext, (I assume all my password stuff and browser cache.. things are encrypted in some way).

I don't know what you mean by being careful. I'd like to just give read access to libraries and read/write to my home folder. I don't know if that's possible though?

like, besides examining the entirety of the source code, I'll never know exactly what a program is up to.

I'm not saying that doesn't also I apply to the rest of my system, but it's a lot easier to put my trust in "corporation with userbase in millions" than "man on github".

Has using GNU/Linux changed you, /g/?
Before, I used to be a belligerent Winfag. I would hate on GNU/Linux users vehemently, the hive mentality raged strong in me, but it was also out of envy and confusion that these people could actually ENJOY using their computers and not be subjugated to the disgusting ecosystem that Microsoft forces their users into. I went to college and subsequently had to take systems administration courses involving RHEL-based systems. Needless to say, I feel in love. I couldn't believe that I could actually use a system to it's fullest potential and actually control the system simultaneously.

Sounds like you don't quite understand the whole 'linux' thing.

Permissions apply to a user's ability to modify files, not a program's ability. If you run a program as another user with more limited permissions, that'd do it, I suppose. You could use 'su <username>' to change to another user. Might have to make one first.

>>52275725

>>
>>52275845
Well shit, apparently not. So do I have no control over what a program does once it's executed?
>>
>>52275741
Yeah.

At first I was reluctant and on /g/ I was pretty much the book definition of a /v/edditor.
Gave Linux a try and failed miserably (my fault but I didn't realize it atm)), niggered my hdd completely, had to use rescue tools to even make it usable, which even further reassured my negative opinions about it.

After few months I decided to give it another try, dualbooting went successfuly.
So I used debian for a month or two, each day using windows less and less until I gave up, wiped the hdd and installed linux.

Since then I learned about every single retarded quirk of using it as a desktop os through my own experience.
Feels okay I guess.
It just makes you do think differently about a computer and makes you do things in a different way.

Whether it was a good decision to let myself be redpilled by Stallman, I don't know yet.

Also one funny thing, videogames are more enjoyable than they used to be.
One thing being I have a lot less time for them since I went to med school, second thing I actually have to carefully research whether putting effort into installing a game will be worth it.

I also discovered love for puzzle games, probably because they usually work just fine and they're those kind of games you can play 5 minutes a day in the middle of some other task
>>
I'm playing Phantasy Star IV now. There are so many old games that I never played that I can be okay with not having games the moment they get released.

If you run a program, that program has exactly the same permissions the user you ran it with has.

If you don't know what a program does, you shouldn't be running it.

People are under the impression that you can only wreck a system with terminal commands and scripts, but you could just as easily create an .exe file that does the equivalent of "del C:Windows/sys32/*" if you run it as admin.

The key difference (at least with *buntu) is the kernel.

*buntu versions stick to the same Linux kernel version for most/all of its release period. So, for example, a true LTS version will stick with its same kernel for the whole 5 years that it's supported. Unless you do one of the dot upgrades (for example, from 14.04.3 to, say, 14.04.4 when it gets released), you'll be using

For *buntu, given the above and some other things, it generally makes the most sense to stick to LTS.

This isn't exactly the case with other distros, though.

There are games for linux, and some of them are fairly high-quality. As Steam shills Steam Play harder and harder, more and more better games will be available for Linux.

As for the point, Linux is architecturally superior, more efficient, free, both as in freedom and as in no money, infinitely more configurable, has no or very few NSA backdoors (as opposed to the hundreds in OSX and Windows), and is written in better languages and makes it easier to learn to actually use a computer.

Even if your computer is purely an entertainment machine, every dollar Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, and the rest lose is a victory. We need to show these bastards that we won't just bend over and take whatever strap-on they put in us. We are free people, and it's high time they started treating us that way.

Come on, man. Just because one uses a computer for games does not mean that they shouldn't be on a computer.

PC Gaming is a far more free thing than Console gaming. At least PC games can be modified, as opposed to consoles which are even worse than Windows for restricting your freedom.

I despise Microsoft, but giving money to the console companies (one of whom is fucking Microsoft) is not the answer.
