I was on a desktop thread months ago and I posted photos of my old RS232 terminal hooked to a headless linux PC. The morons thought it was a monitor even when I repeatedly told them it was a terminal. LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is based on Debian instead of Ubuntu and is what I used for a bit.
My chain of progress (first distro I used to last)
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy -> 9.10 Karmic -> 10.04 Lucid -> 12.10 (for a week, fuck unity) -> Mint with MATE desktop (14, "nadia" -> Linux Mint Debian Edition (I got bloody tired of needing to fresh install distros every few months, and it was based on Debian Testing's rolling-release system at that point instead of using 'update packs') -> true Debian testing (Jessie) -> Debian Sid. And I've been using sid for the last year and a half.

I got away without using a terminal for a while, because Ubuntu and Mint have GUI interfaces, but if you really want to do everything, you'll need a terminal. For example, some emulators are not in Ubuntu/Debian's package manager.

I'm arch user. After kernel upgrade to version 4.3.3-2 systemd still load 4.2.5-1. In /var/lib/modules i have only 4.3.3-2 modules, so old kernel cant load them.

I want to compile my own linux kernel for entertainment purposes. SystemD is not system32 and it's not a virus. It was initially a system init (The scrolling text you see when booting is a system init) but SystemD is slowly becoming an omni-purpose tool for Linux. Some people aren't a fan. I have no opinion of it either way. If you somehow find a way to remove SystemD (assuming it is your system init) then you'll brick your system.
If all I am doing is coding assignments in c/c++ and java, writing documents, and internet browsing does it matter if the packages in LTS are "ancient"?

the answer to your question is no, it probably doesn't matter if packages are ancient.
sid isn't rolling release, sid is not really usable and not meant to be. if you want rolling release go for void linux (or arch, but i really like void). it has a nice installer, is stable, has a nice package manager, up to date everything, libressl by default, different DEs if you install from disk, the works.
if you want a system up and running quickly and you want it to be pretty fresh, right now i would recommend debian stretch (although jessie is also still very nice) or, if it has to be that way, ubuntu mate 15.04. once it's installed, just apt-get install build-essential and you're good to go.

I've been kind of wondering how permissions work in Linux. From what I can gather in Windows, if you want to install some software, you need admin privileges, which basically grants that program access to your whole system whether it needs it or not. If it really wanted to, it could mess up everything.
What kind of restrictions does chmod give programs? What about things that are already installed like gedit or whatever. To modify system files, you need to use gedit in root mode. So I just really don't get it. If we assume some random source I've downloaded is malicious, what happens once I do chmod?
Also some place saychmod a+rxwhereas others are justchmod a+x.
Is the (r) for reading absolutely any file on my system? If I don't give it (w) it can't change anything, but it could in theory just send all of my data to some nigerian warlord. Is that something to be concerned about?

You want all files to be at least readable usually.

that's what android does. If you don't run as root (lets you read or write anywhere), programs obey the permissions from chmod. usually non-program system files have permissions like 644 (the 'user' that installed them, root, has r/w permissions, everyone else has read-only) for files, and 755 for directories (to change into a directory you need execute permissions).
system programs like your shell (often /bin/sh or /bin/bash) usually have 755 permissions so anyone can run them but only the owner (root usually) can overwrite them.
You don't want to give a program only access to its own directory (it wouldn't be able to access libraries it depends on or write its config file), but this could be done in chroots or by writing a program that you KNOW will be executed in such an environment.
As long as you aren't root and you are careful you'll be fine.

Most good emulators nowadays have linux ports. Certainly most open source ones do. Dolphin for Gamecube and Wii, mupen64plus for N64, Higan (bsnes) or snes9x for SNES, retroarch and the Genesis Plus GX core for genesis/master system games, gambatte for Game Boy/Game Boy Color games (the most accurate emulator, on par with BGB), or BGB in wine - the author cares about linux via wine support, though he refuses to opensource BGB or build a native linux version.
Also, nestopia 'undead' is a great NES emulator, and the crappy FCEUX (less cycle-accurate and has crappier color palette) has been ported as well. For GBA, there's visualboyadvance, of course, as well as its successors. desmume for NDS, Stella for atari 2600, the list goes on.

Permissions apply to a user's ability to modify files, not a program's ability. If you run a program as another user with more limited permissions, that'd do it, I suppose. You could use 'su <username>' to change to another user. Might have to make one first.

At first I was reluctant and on /g/ I was pretty much the book definition of a /v/edditor.
Gave Linux a try and failed miserably (my fault but I didn't realize it atm)), niggered my hdd completely, had to use rescue tools to even make it usable, which even further reassured my negative opinions about it.
After few months I decided to give it another try, dualbooting went successfuly.
So I used debian for a month or two, each day using windows less and less until I gave up, wiped the hdd and installed linux.
Since then I learned about every single retarded quirk of using it as a desktop os through my own experience.
Feels okay I guess.
It just makes you do think differently about a computer and makes you do things in a different way.
Whether it was a good decision to let myself be redpilled by Stallman, I don't know yet.
Also one funny thing, videogames are more enjoyable than they used to be.
One thing being I have a lot less time for them since I went to med school, second thing I actually have to carefully research whether putting effort into installing a game will be worth it.

There are games for linux, and some of them are fairly high-quality. As Steam shills Steam Play harder and harder, more and more better games will be available for Linux.
As for the point, Linux is architecturally superior, more efficient, free, both as in freedom and as in no money, infinitely more configurable, has no or very few NSA backdoors (as opposed to the hundreds in OSX and Windows), and is written in better languages and makes it easier to learn to actually use a computer.
Even if your computer is purely an entertainment machine, every dollar Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, and the rest lose is a victory.
