Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Okay so I plan on getting my new desktop Linux and W10. W10 for games because I'm not going to fuck with Wine, and Linux for every other conceivable thing.

Can someone please explain the premise of differing Linux distros, and how it works? My friend runs it, warned me that I might have to do a lot of things in "environments". What exactly does this mean?

What are the other hurdles involved? I'm determined, but I jdon't have more than a vague notion of what benefits I get, either. The only familiarity I have is from running Kali maybe 2 or 3 times. This is it.

Yeah it's more difficult than a lot of distros, unless you use one of the hacked together tools for resolving dependencies, then it is pretty easy. But then what's the point in using slackware anyway if you're going to do that.

That's Ubuntu not Unity. If you talk about the search function, yeah, that's Unity, but other than that, Ubuntu is teaching not to care about Freedom, which is basically straight against every GNU/Linux is about.

debian can be installed minimally. but so can arch, *buntu or gentoo aswell.
since it's a 2009 macbook pro you will need non-free drivers so http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/8.2.0/amd64/iso-cd/ this should be great. how light do you want it? xfce is nice, customizable and lightweight, i personally use it on almost all my computers but LXDE and LXQT are pretty cool aswell. if it has to be really lightweight a WM would be suited better however. maybe openbox or i3. openbox is the easiest wm to get into imo.

Im running arch on my laptop, but it seems that something always wants to break, and finals are coming and ill be using this laptop a lot of hours everyday, so I want to be more rock solid. Thinking about putting either fedora or xubuntu on it. What would /flt/ recommend?
>>
>>52214783
Just read about the updates, Arch usually tells its users if some updates "could" break anything and provide solutions. If you want a rock solid OS, install debian.

fedora is roughly at the level of arch
xubuntu is OKish choice IMO

but why get distracted

So I've been away from the linux scene for a long time. (University and now full-time job).

My main desktop/workstation running Arch has fallen apart as far as the system goes. Can someone fill me in on what's happened in the last year and a half or so?

General things that I heard of but didn't pay attention to:

* systemd a shit
* ubuntu still not any better, more botnet
* arch a shit
* arch-based distros for some reason are ok for some people?
* debian a shit
* fedora a meme

So what to do?

Hardly.
Current stable release (23) uses the 4.2.8 kernel.
I'd say it's the level of debian testing.
With the biggest difference being when something's fucked on fedora it gets fixed immediately while on debian testing you will wait

Icinga, its basically a fork of Nagios that was created when the lead developer of Nagios went apeshit and started suing people.

I'd suggest to go with Icinga2, its a clean rewrite of the whole thing, with a better configuration language, optional clustering and a nicer web frontend.

a year ago some people here looked through random peoples google docs and found some guys folders in which he had pictures of alonka (a pretty grill from Russia/Ukraine), some videos with loveletters and an .exe file which contained a quiz with questions about their first date and similar that he made. we found both of them. he was alone and embarrassed that we found it. she had some new bf that looks like a douche.

Honestly, the easiest way to make Linux more attractive is just to create programs intended to make people comfortable with the terminal.

IMO, the discomfort is not that it's some complex "coding language": it's that 1) it's so important/inherent to Unix-based systems that you can easily fuck your shit up and 2) it's another set of things to learn, ways to navigate the computer, etc.

I've said this before, but probably the best way to do it would be:
a) Create a well-made game based on standard terminal commands (including a dummy game version of a package manager and repositories). However, don't just make it a tutorial, but an ACTUAL interesting game in itself, that people will willingly go back to. Think of Solitaire and Minesweeper, which both taught functions of the mouse.

b) Either in the above game or as a default shell function, give a preview of what each command will do before the person actually executes it. This could either come in normal, everyday language, or perhaps with a GUI/tooltip/etc. Perhaps give a simple yes/no thing to confirm things (or enter/backspace). Obviously, normal/power users can either install normal shells or turn the previews off, but it might be useful.

I installed Xubuntu on my personal desktop and laptop after trying 1 or 2 other varieties (i think redhat, ubuntu with gnome, and back-track) required for my college courses . My thought process was I wanted the 'just works' of ubuntu, without the unity desktop. I've been rocking a Xubuntu and Windows 7 dual-boot for the past few years now, and Xubuntu has been (mostly) very solid.

It is okay.
KDE is a heavy DE. It will use about 300mb ram, if you don't disable anything, so I wouldn't recommend it if you use it on a 12 year old laptop.
If you have 2gb or more, it will be fine.

KDE is probably the best DE out there.
The default applications is a lot better, (dolphin, firefox-kde, okular, kate, kile, gwenview, kolourpaint, krita, krunner etc) is vastly better than the gtk alternatives.
The whole thing can be configured from a GUI which writes to readable config files, so configuring it makes a lot of sense for new users.

You might find that it does too much for you and alternatives is better, but KDE is a great place to start so you know how good it can be.

He's obviously saying that Arch just happens to use what would normally be tty1 for graphics, which is different from how nearly every other distro does it. Usually 1-6 are terminals, and the graphical seccion is in 7, with empty spaces for additional graphical sessions on 8-12. Using 1 makes it a tiny bit easier to remember and faster to enter, but it also makes things a bit messy if you run multiple graphical sessions.

Never used LXDE, but:
You could try using "nitrogen" to set your desktop background. It's got a nice GUI for image selection, it supports multiple monitors, and you can add "nitrogen --restore" to your ~/.xinitrc so that the wallpapers that were used last time are loaded every time you start a graphical session. You can also use "feh", but I don't think it gives you the graphical selection tool (not really a big deal if you don't change it a lot, just use your file manager to pick and type the file name into the command line) and I'm not sure about multiple monitors with feh.

>volume control and brightness control and mouse sensitivity scales do not work
Do they work as root, or not?

>file manager bitches about not being able to open root when nobody wanted to
What is the specific error, and have you tried googling it? Please do not ever ask people to resolve errors for you without including the error. You might get a more detailed error by launching the file manager from a terminal emulator and watching the terminal output.

I've done this before but for some reason I can't do it this time, I keep running into an error while trying to update libtorrent-rasterbar, I've got version 1.0.6 that I compiled when I first installed qbittorrent but now I can't compile version 1.0.7. Do I just give up and install transmission? I like having an RSS downloader though.

don't listen to this fag, it just takes a learning curve to get use to it. Once you get it up and running its simple and stable. The main difference its more geared towards finding and compiling your own software as opposed to installing everything from managers. Its basically a philosophy thing, do you want to resolve a hand full of dependencies for certain applications and have exactly what you want or do you want it done for you and risk alot of bloat and things you don't need/ modified binaries.

If a person has half a brain, they'll avoid Gentoo like the plague. Funtoo is more likely.

Nostalgia OSes are literally memes. They're used, at best, on throwaway machines and in VMs.

Plan 9 is an old meme. I don't think anyone here would ever have interest in using it.

IMHO, distro-hopping is nonsense after a while. Just install a VM program and play with any/every system, or just use their Live CD/USBs. No reason to change systems just because you're "bored".

Funtoo Linux is a Gentoo-based distribution developed by Daniel Robbins (the founder and former project leader of Gentoo Linux) and a core team of developers, built around a basic vision of improving the core technologies in Gentoo Linux. Funtoo Linux features native UTF-8 support enabled by default, a git-based, distributed Portage tree and Funtoo overlay, an enhanced Portage with more compact mini-manifest tree, automated imports of new Gentoo changes every 12 hours, GPT/GUID boot support and streamlined boot configuration, enhanced network configuration, up-to-date stable and current Funtoo stages - all built using Funtoo's Metro build tool.

Why the anti-Fedora sentiment here?

My brother taught me to play games on it when I was nine and it took me half an hour to install when I was a 14-year-old Linux newfag with no knowledge of anything.

Used it for five years before installing Gentoo. It's a solid OS, secure, simple package manager, good support, good efficiency, can use any desktop environment.

Frankly, I find apt-get a confusing and needlessly complicated manager. I never liked the *buntus or Debian.

>Function keys don't work
The only laptop I've got is an old Asus EeePC. There's a driver in the kernel that has to be enabled for the keyboard brightness controls to work. I think it also enables the keyboard sound controls, and some of the other keyboard functions, but not all of them. Some of them I had to implement myself using acpid and shell scripts, which is really not as hard as it sounds. This is the only time I've had to do backlight control with Linux as opposed to a display's firmware. I know that there are also some generic backlight control drivers, but I don't really know what they do or how they work.

Basically, you may need to see if the kernel has some make or model specific drivers for your laptop. Besides backlight control, these would probably also do things like status LED control and stuff like that.

I took this screensshot a minute ago but forgot to post it. You shouldn't be able to do any damage by turning these on and off. Some of them are hidden unless you enable other things, though. For example, it looks like the EeePC driver requires "rfkill" because one of the keyboard controls toggles wifi power. (I took this on my desktop)

You may want to google the model of your laptop and "gentoo" to see if there's some archived wiki page or something that explains how to get stuff working. There's one for my EeePC.
