newfag here: I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X201i for $7

I know you guys like Lenovo so I thought you might be able to help me with it. why do you guys like the brand so much anyway?

it's cosmetically a little beat up but it seems to be charging so far

on boot it gives me the error message 'PXE-E05: The LAN adapter's NVM is missing or corrupt' but proceeds to the Windows 7 login screen for the previous user's account

I have some questions
the hard drive slot cover is missing and the fucking hdd already fell out once, should I duct tape that shit?

is this thing worth spending money on or should I just use it until it dies?

what OS should I put on it for fun & ease of use for word processing & playing chess?

any and all input is very much appreciated thanks guys.

I presume you don't care about PXE? If so, go into BIOS, put the HDD above PXE in the boot order list.

>should I duct tape that shit?

Sure.

Pretty much anything. Haiku is kinda neat. Ubuntu or some other Debian fork if you just wanna get shit done.

whoa thanks so much for the reply

I don't even know what PXE is so I guess I don't need it!

I'll look up Haiku, I like the name. never used anything except windows but fuck that

I'll keep bumping this for a while

PXE is used to boot your computer from a server, usually used in business/school/library/other similar settings where you want every machine doing the same thing.

Haiku is mostly an experimental project, for normal use, mainstream distros of Linux or even BSD are much more usable.

The great thing about thinkpads is the ability to buy replacement parts on the cheap. just get a caddy cover for 2.50 and free shipping.

shit you're right, it's so cheap. thanks

I guess I will go with Ubuntu or mint then, thanks

Tape it.
The cover should be $3.
Install windows 7 then install linux mint.

You should do a clean reinstall if it already haves it.
