I'm looking for advice on whether or not i should switch from Windows to Linux on a laptop. I just want tips on what distribution i should get and the pros and cons to Linux.

Just no

Linux Mint 17. I recommend MATE Edition, 64-bit, with the multimedia codecs.

If the laptop is recent, you will have no problems with it. If it's older, and you find that you have a problem with the backlight, install Linux Mint 16 instead.

Source: I have Linux Mint 17.2 MATE Edition installed on my Acer laptop.

Don't think you can just jump ship. Linux is so different from Windows you'll have to adopt a whole new mentality of what a computer is and does.

Make sure you know how to use a command line before jumping in and you'll figure it out from there. I'm saying all this assuming you've been a Windows person all your life like me up until a few months ago. Be prepared to relearn a lot of what you know about computers.

For distros I recommend Ubuntu because the UI it comes with is like all the good parts of Windows and OSX put together. You'll still have a GUI to cling to for a while but don't get too attached to it.

OP i don't recommend it. save up and get a mac. even mint and ubuntu bug out constantly in infuriatingly random and hardware specific (and kernel specific) ways. Good luck googlinhg for all that shit

guys how's battery life with kde? I mean it's known to be le bloated but honestly it wasn't my case, as I didn'get a much worse battery life in my antergos installation than in windows. Any thoughts? Also, tlp helped a LOT

Yeah on a laptop it's quite nice. As for which distro to use I recommend *Ubuntu, Mint or any of the Fedora Spins. Depending on the hardware you're working with you might want to go with a lightweight desktop environment.

If you feel like life is not worth living anymore you might want to try arch or gentoo

Have fun and stuff

linux isn't crazy different or difficult to adapt to
I replaced osx with arch on my macbook a week or so ago
with very minimal experience with linux, following guides and googling problems got me set up with a window manager and the base stuff I need
I like fiddling are though so now I'll spend a while making it pretty

I like arch but I get that it is not for everybody
I dived in because I knew I'd want to try it at some point anyway

my biggest piece of advice is to ask for help on irc channels for your distro if you can't find the solution after googling
I have a friend who has used arch for a few years and he was able to help me out

last one, check out other people's dotfiles, there's a decent board on reddit called unixporn

OP here thanks for all the help. I have been looking into getting Mint so i just might get that.
>>
>>52135217
or just use mint

i chose the distro for parent's computer
based on what would be most similar to w7

decided on mint xfce.
some adjustments:
- made the trashcan visible on the desktop
- moved the min/max windows toolbar icon to the bottom right
- installed kolourpaint (mspaint)
- installed leafpad (notepad)
- installed chrome browser

created icons on desktop for firefox,
libreoffice write and calc,
and those mentioned above

last advice for the folks was:
to find a file, right-click on desktop

after half an hour, they were perfectly comfortable with it
everything just werks
