Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

It's a great Window Manager though. Literally name one thing wrong with it, other than it take a few hours to get used to, and then for the rest of your life you have a super customizable WM that can run any command with any Keyboard Shortcut of your choosing.

Such a shame about Manjaro, had potential.
>>
>>52040787
>>52040796
It fucking happened again. I was mistaken, I never clicked enter. After purging a kernel and clicking up key ^[[A^[[B^[[A^ etc etc appeared instead of my last command. This is where I would hold down backspace and the terminal executed a bunch of shit on its own. Why does this happen? Now something else was deleted. I wish I could explain this better but I have no idea what is going on and why the terminal executes things when I press backspace

Anyway I'm rebooting now, if someone responds and I don't respond back, it's because I bricked this piece of shit

I did open a new one after fucking up the first time. After deleting another old kernel, the exact same thing occured when I tried to up key for the earlier command. Both times I panicked and hit backspace, and for some reason clicking backspace would start a bunch of deletions. This might sound ridiculous and I think so too. At least the OS still seems to work after reboot. Now I'm just going to drink some more and forget this tragedy.

Hi /g/. Just installed Ubuntu to get the hang of Linux.

Can someone explain to me the difference between:

sudo apt-get remove

and

sudo apt-get purge

Which one should I be using? Is that the best way to delete packages?

What about files? Should I right-click delete them or use rm -Rf or something similar?

Cheers.

Hey /g/. I tried installing Arch Linux today, following its beginner's guide. I installed it on a pretty old HP Compaq 6715b laptop to give it a try. Installation went alright, but on its first time booting up (using GRUB, because non-UEFI), the terminal fonts got all fucked up -- pic related.

I didn't set any fonts during setup or configuration, so it should be using the defaults, and I didn't have this issue when running arch linux from usb to install it. Running setfont also does nothing. Did plenty of searching and couldn't find any similar issues. Any ideas?
>>
>>52042657
Also, probably important to note that I have to add "nomodeset" to the kernel parameters, or else I get a black screen after launch. Laptop has an integrated intel gpu.

So what?
I clearly said "made" not "makes", so learn to read breh.

>omething would never have happened if it were not for something else, it is pure conjecture and not an argument.
Do you have any idea at all what you're talking about?

Unix clones (BSD) which were much more mature than Linux in the mid 90s were sued (as well as corporate users) to hell and back by USL which made people doubt in BSD's legal future.

This made Linux (which was in very early stage) gain a lot of attention.

GPL came to help when companies started using BSD's permissiveness to lock the code to gain advantage over others, while GPL and the obligation to share the code as well as all changes made to it became really popular among the "hacker" scene which later resulted in a different development model (cathedral vs bazaar) which led to a dramatic increase in development speed.

If it wasn't for the license, Linux would never be as popular as it is today, even Torvalds choosing the GPL license was the best decision he ever made.
>>
When dualbooting, do I even need to install another bootloader besides Windows'
>>
>>52051745
I mean, I have 2 laptops right now. This one that dual boots Win7 and Arch is my "main" laptop, my other "backup" laptop only has Arch on it, and I have a desktop with Win7 on it for gaming purposes. The only time I ever use Windows anymore is for playing the occasional video game and my laptops with Intel GPUs don't do that very well so there's no reason for me to have Windows on them. I'd much rather have that extra 40GB of space for a couple of 1080p movies or something.

Slackware is nice but I'm switching to something more minimalist for my laptop. It's great and all but I want to try something new.

Should i go with crux, void, arch, lunar, guix, debian testing netinstall, gentoo, lfs, or something different?

I'd like something rolling, or at least semi recent but it's not a deal breaker. I'm fine with compiling packages and manual dependency checking. Speed is my top priority since i'll be carrying my laptop everywhere for school and i need to to boot in a few seconds (i have an ssd so it's not to hard to do). I'm not going to be playing much games (only the occasional 2d game), just running mpv, wm-utils or openbox, and firefox. I'd probably use void if it had more packages (though i never tried source installs on it).

Void is nice for binary but it can lack some packages, depending on your usage.
You won't need to do any dependency checking, things have moved on in the world of linux and you don't get dependency hell when you don't use slackware, despite what grandpas seem to think.

It's not exactly the same with a pre-compiled kernel. The stage3 does come with a pre-compiled kernel now but other than that there are a few things implemented in an attempt to stabilize things and to make things easier for users. Right at the moment there are less forked packages than there used to be and a lot of the things implemented first in funtoo have now been add to gentoo but it's funtoo which is generally pushing things forward.

Either are very good and of course quite similar. I prefer funtoo's stance on systemd and the ability to discuss things with Daniel Robbins, I agree with his vision and direction of *ntoo.
