KIM DOTCOM IS KILL
>>
>The hoopla started on January 20, 2012, when New Zealand police—acting on the orders of American prosecutors—showed up at the mansion of flamboyant Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, swarming over the property and bringing along two police helicopters. They cut their way through locks and into the home's "panic room," where Dotcom was hiding in apparent fear of a kidnapping or robbery. Authorities seized 18 luxury vehicles and secured NZ$11 million in cash from bank accounts—and they grabbed a whopping 150TB of data from Dotcom's many digital devices.

lol
I'm glad the World Police cooperates with useless countries to promote peace and safety to the world.
>>
>Extradited to America for breaking American copyright laws
>Despite never setting foot in America

Wow, that would be like me being extradited to Saudi Arabia for saying Allah is not real, there are no gods, and Mohammad was a child rapist.
>>

Good, fuck that guy.
>>
megaupload was truly the best there ever was.
i still feel for those who paid for the lifetime membership
>>
Well, at least he's white.

He'll get sent to a comfy white collar prison camp for a few years.

Might even get /fit/ in prison as well.
>>
>>52013610
It wasn't. It was slow and had horrible download limitations if you didn't pay for a premium membership.
The only reason a lot of people used it was because the uploaders got money for it.
>>
>>52013610

Despite having to wait to download (like Rapidshit and many other Direct Download sites), Megaupload at least had one thing going for it -- variety. Fucking everything was on it.

That said, piracy will never die. Even when one of the larger heads falls, more will come to replace it.
>>
>>52013616
>He'll get sent to a comfy white collar prison camp for a few years.

More like 100 years if you see the shit sentences Americans get
>>
>>52013632
nope. maybe you weren't using during it's final days. you could make as many free accounts and those allowed multiple dls at a time.

That's fucking bullshit.

I distinctly remember Megaupload was the first file sharing service that gave free users unlimited download speed and unlimited concurrent downloads.

I remember going from download 1 file at a time with 36KB/s on Rapidshit to downloading at 1MB/s on Megaupload.

He can still appeal it; and if he gets New Zealand citizenship before (which he just became eligible for) it gets even more complicated. Dotcom isn't actually a citizen of New Zealand yet, or they'd probably have already told the US to fuck off.
>>
>>52017044
Wouldn't he be a German citizen then?

They can't just extradite him to a completely different nation.

This is literally telling the world that if the US doesn't like anything you're doing anywhere, get ready to get chained and dragged across the world to face charges in a foreign court

So why is NZ applying US law then. This isn't even about copyright infringement it's about extradition. NZ was supposed to be a sort of safe-haven for copyright infringement somewhat. The USA isn't just shitting up the world by destabilizing shitholes and causing massive problems, it has also infilitrated the law of sovereign countries and unions and organizations (e.g. this thread, FIFA (which I suspect is to force the go-ahead on the world cup being held in qatar)).

Fuck the US.
>>
>>52021361
>NZ was supposed to be a sort of safe-haven for copyright infringement somewhat.
What. International copyright law is international copyright law.
The problem is really the other charges. Due to the nature of the online world we have now it is possible to commit crimes in other countries without being in that country. USA is trying to charge him on things that are eligible for extradition, one of those I think is money laundering. Copyright infringement would be charged within the country of arrest.

The reason why they're adding on the other charges is to get him extradited, they'd probably drop them afterward and just go after him for copyright infringement in US courts, which they would likely win, and they use money laundering broadly anyway, something like effectively if you touch money you gain in any way then you have laundered it.

The internet is an international place with criminals operating across borders. If you could hide behind borders then nothing could ever be enforced on the internet.

That said, the copyright holders could just sue him in new zealand as that's where he commited the acts for which hes being sued. American civil parties their rights have been infringed and the criminal prosecutors from new zealand might have a criminal case. Not sure why the American government can turn this into a criminal case as they have nothing to do with this.
