Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

No news.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

At work, so I can post pic of thinkpad later.

Aunt snapped and killed herself a week ago. While clearing out her shit we found a T410 pretty much unused. No one else cared so I grabbed it.

She was always pretty unhinged. Talked about Illuminati and freemason/lizard people stuff all the time, so none of us were surprised. Got a free laptop though.

Can anyone tell me what kind of plastic ThinkPads are made of? Were different plastics used throughout the years?
>>
>>51988646
>>51988705
Perhaps, the neckbeard could not have told anybody why, if anybody could have asked him; but he had a special desire to see the Thinkpad opened; and begged it to poke around on its trackpoint, as it had no touchpad.

"What!" exclaimed the Ghost, "Would you so soon put out, with worldly hands, the light I give from my TFT panel? Is it not enough that you are one of those whose passions made this laptop, and force me through whole trains of years to wear it low upon my autist backpack!"

The neckbeard reverently disclaimed all intention to offend or any knowledge of having willfully bonneted the Spirit at any period of his previous consumer shit meme laptop ownership. He then made bold to inquire what business class laptops brought him there.

>>
>>51989015
Resell them locally for facebook and youtube machines. C2Ds can still do everything besides video games. Nobody in this town gives a quarter of a shit about PC gaming, if they did they would get a console. Cheapest option at best buy is $300 for a single core pentium/amd equiv and $500 for an i3. People love the $150 alternative, I make 60 - 150% profit off of a T60. Everything in the pic is all gone.
>>
>>51988971
Well, it has several bugs and it's therefore not worth it.
First, it uses another video lane than the normal one, so the computer thinks the old screen is still attached, and outputs signal to nowhere. This takes a toll on the graphic card/integrated graphics, you get less battery time and more heat.
Second, you can't change brightness under Linux without some hacks. You can change it under Windows, but only if both screens (the 1080p and the old one the cimputer still thinks it has) active. If you deactivate the ld one under the screen options, you get no brightness control. If you have both active, one edge of your screen will eat your windows/mouse/whatever.
Thirdly, you can't use the Display Port output in the dicks, if you use one.

The first one is the more problematic one.

How do you guys feel about using a recalled battery? I'll have it replaced of course, but the recalled one is still in incredibly good condition with over 90 percent of its initial capacity remaining. I feel bad about letting such a good battery go to waste, but I'd certainly feel even worse if it blew my nuts off. What would you do?

Yea, you're pretty much confirming the fears I had about the 2 screen outputs/brightness thing, I was hoping there might be some fix for it that I hadn't found yet.

You know of any 1080p mods that are actually worth it? It seems like all of em include hijacking the DP lanes of the dock and therefore suffer the same drawbacks.

Every one of them have the problem of backlighting and/or more load on the GPU.

The only one that does not have any problem is the mod a korean (japanese?) guy did, that used a LVDS to eDP adapter and a BIOS hack. Sadly, he didn't release the BIOS hack. He's the only guy in the world with a fully functioning FHD x230 I'm aware of.

Convenient login, if you just woke up at 4AM and need to check your email or something, you don't want to be typing a password while half-blind.

It's fine if you really want the netbook form factor then it's a better choice than most in that arena. Most people don't talk about them because for the price of a used x120e you can get Thinkpads with first-gen Core-i CPUs that are significantly more capable than the E-350 despite being older.

Is it normal to spend more buying a new battery than I spend buying a used thinkpad sold without battery?

>>
>>51993239
If you own a thinkpad worth that little (no offense, I have a T61), then buy a chinashit battery for way less. Before you ask, they're all pretty much the same. Just mind your charging thresholds, collective wisdom seems to suggest it's more important with the cheap cells they contain.

I'm playing around with the idea of getting an X200/X201/X220 with the lowest-end possible chip in the range (and an SSD) and using it as a portable X terminal. I'm using a kind of high-spec X200 for it right now and I'm really liking it.

I purchased a T420 and I've been getting some stuttering in games here and there accompanied by a spike in ping.

Is there any recommended driver or something I should do to the network adapters to fix this?

My temps are fine. But I notice that usbport.sys has been causing a lot of DCP, is there any driver to fix that out as well? Would that help this out?

I have literally no idea why this is happening.
>>
>>51993887
Only if you're running your CPU at a constant 100% load.
Otherwise CPUs underclock themselves to save power when idling, and your battery life ends up the same regardless if CPU choice.
>>
>>51994044
Uninstall gigabit ethernet from device manager.

Then restart and plug in a lan cable. It should install the ootb drivers which don't have DPC issues.
>>
>>51993447
I wouldn't spend extra for an auction for a x201 with a battery because at best it'll be well-used (figure 60% or less unless you're lucky). You'll be happier buying a new one.

Thank you. The used thinkpad guide also calls our warning on having the bios locked by password. If not precised, but the sellers include a picture of the computer displaying the bios, is it a good sign?

size difference is negligible, x230 has different (and some say worse), but in my opinion still very good keyboard, thanks to that it is also much slimmer, also has the ivy bridge, so more power, more graphics performance and less power use, lasts longer on battery

Now that my eeepc is dead, I consider buying a thinkpad but I can't make my mind between a x200 and a x201. I don't really need the additional power of the x201 but I read on forums that the x200 gets hotter and is more subject to motherboard damages than the x201...

Have an x200. All you need to do is blow the dust out of it and you should be fine. Replacing the thermal paste can also help but isn't necessary, at least in my case
I use ubuntu gnome with gnome classic and despite the slow boot time it's responsive and fast as hell for its age.
You might want to look for an x200s with a 1440x900 screen. Less powerful but lighter and obviously a better screen

I have an x200 running lubuntu, and I just set up an x201 with Win 7 Pro for my normie sister.

Limited data set, but my x200 idles at 41C and I really only see it ever go to ~50C or 55C when I'm playing minecraft for 20+ minutes at a time. (I have not really done any "torture tests" on it). I have never seen it go above 60 C (I have a temp sensor on my LXDE taskbar).

I had lubuntu on the x201 for a little while, just wanted to bench it with glmark2. I don't really remember anything about the temps so they must have been unexceptional, <=50C or so.

In comparison the x201 thing is a fucking housefire with Shitdows. I had it on the "maximum performance" setting to check out the youtube hd performance, noticed the air coming out the vent was hot enough to be painful up close. Had to go download proprietary speccy just to get a temp readout (>windows) --- After five minutes of 720p youtube the cpu was at 96C and the motherboard was at 92C. I stopped youtube and waited a few minutes, it dropped to 80C idle. Switching to "power saver" dropped it to ~63C idle. I went into "advanced settings" and cranked everything down (maximum CPU frequency, graphics perfomance) and now it idles at ~50-55C, which is merely *bad* instead of fucking horrible.

In conclusion, put linux on it and you'll be fine. Anecdotal evidence might support my theory, as every complaint I've seen about high temps on a thinkpad has been accompanied by a speccy screenshot.

I concur, I don't know what the fuck is going on. Perhaps Microsoft fucking up windows 7 on purpose just to get us to upgrade? Dude come on, I just installed linux, with TLP, and it barely gets warm.

What is better for a thinkpad t420, TLP or Laptop-tools?

I got this sumbitch used and its fucking amazing, but I want to wring as MUCH battery life out of it as possible.

I got a t400 that got water spilled on the bottom of the laptop. This morning can't post... only showing two status when powering on... z and ac adapter plugin. Open up the keyboard, and notice cpu spinning... is my motherboard dead? If not how I get it back to post?

I never tried laptop tools but while setting up your energy consumption profiles can help, I think that keeping a good threshold ratio for your battery can help the most.

Can't squeeze much from a battery that has seen better days.

Call an exorcist. Your laptop was built on an indian burial ground.

I would advice you to leave it alone, it must be practicing those mad break dance skills.

It's probably kill.

Try unplugging it for a day or two just to make sure it's dry. Then try the button trick - unplug batt and AC and push power button 10 times in 1 second intervals. On the 10th, hold power button for 30 sec. Plug batt and AC back in and power on.

Will try. Thanks Anon!

I want to get a laptop for college, because it would be convenient to have one available to me at times. I already decided that I will get an x series of some sort, but I'm not sure which one. So far, I'm considering an x220, x201, or x220i. I'm also considering the x230 a bit, but not as much.

It's there a huge performance difference between the standard version and the I version? I know the I version uses Iow power cpus, but is there even that much of a difference in battery life?

All I want to do with my laptop is some web browsing, word processing, presentation making, with maybe some programming, so I don't need anything fancy.

Something is wrong with either your temperature reporting software or that Thinkpad. I have an X201 with the M540 running Windows 7, and my idle temps are in the low to mid 40s and I haven't seen temp spikes like those at all.

Any of those would suit that use case and I don't think you'd feel limited by any of them under that criteria. It really comes down to personal preference and condition of any given example.

If you're concerned about max battery life, go with the x220/x220i. Sandy Vagina processors were a considerable leap forward for efficiency and you have the option of a slice battery if you can stand the weight. Closest thing to future-proofing you'll get is the x230 obviously, but the keyboard may be a drawback. Any of the 3 have an IPS screen option but most you find are going to be TN.

The x201 is the thrifty man's choice and would still suit you fine. It's a 16:10 TN display instead of hollyjew 16:9. IPS mod is possible but not really a good financial decision.
