Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

How do I go about dual booting with windows 7 and debian? Downloading debian with kde. Doing my first install of anything linux tonight and am gonna goof around with it for a bit.

Also, should I've got a 290, should I use the video outputs on my board instead of my graphics cards since debian wont have my drivers installed right away?

Kerbal Space Program does not run in 64 bit in windows because it's too unstable.
This leaves you with a mere 3.5Gb ram to use which is not enough if you add a few mods.
On linux it has 64 bit support and works better than windows.

You can use Weston, the reference compositor. As far as I know it's the only compositor that works as a standalone program. I've been out of the loop for a while, though, where Wayland is concerned. Weston is missing way too many features to ever be useful for anything but experimentation, but for experimentation it might be good enough.

This is me.

After getting it installed, I forgot the fucking user name, then fucked up partitions, then had to reinstall Debian after wondering what the fuck GRUB was and why it was broken. Then I had to look around for a hour and get frustrated because whenever I tried to use sudo or something it told me I was getting reported or recorded or some shit. Then I learned all I have to do is type in su then the root password in the terminal.

At least I got my issue fixed.

reinstalling to fix something is pretty dumb but using lubuntu is also pretty dumb

if you don't mind blowing that shit away you should switch to arch while you're at it

"lubuntu loading screen" doesn't really mean anything, can you provide a picture? what you're referring to is probably referring to something specific to a desktop environment

can you get into a TTY? (ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-f2, etc.)

if yes then you can troubleshoot from there. uninstall whatever you think fucked it up, maybe try a different DE or something

getting rid of your display manager and setting up xinitrc might be a good option

My favourite distro is fedora but I have an amdgpu card (r9 285) and xf86-video-amdgpu isn't on fedora yet and I can't find out how to install it for the life of me.

What should I use instead? Or does anyone here know how to install the amdgpu driver on fedora? It looks like I'll have to wait for fedora 24 right now.

So I'm thinking of either installing funtoo (I installed it before, don't worry) or arch. Which should I choose and why?

I've had bad experiences with arch so I'm inclined to go towards funtoo, but the lack of binary repos and the fact that I'll have to compile everything drives me away from it.

Did an update just wreck my bootloader?

I'm using Linux Mint and installed some updates via the tool in the tray as I'd usually do.

I didn't reboot the computer until right now and I can't boot into Linux anymore.

I do have a Windows installation on dual boot and when I start he auto boots into that although I did the settings in bios that he would alwas boot the linux partition. Thing is - that just isn't there anymore. Only bootable partition I can choose from is the UEFI Hard DIsk: Windows Boot Manager.

What is the point of using Linux for privacy, when you guys are making all of your posts on 4chan which logs everything you do and saves on the NSA database, along with hottolink's japan database to sell your social data?

/g/, you people should be more friendly to mchan. It has systems designed to let you post through TOR, with cookies disabled, no captcha, and no javascript required.

I understand if you don't want to post there for whatever reasons (maybe you hate they allow legal naked loli in there), but as far as making a Stallman approved website on the clearnet, mchan is doing it right.

Can any of you handsome studs explain this part of a bash script to me? Basically an anon wrote it for me as I asked about how I could make a script sleep until a specific application is open, rather than me sleeping for X arbitrary seconds.

while true; do
(pgrep 'application' > /dev/null && sleep 0.1) || break
done

As far as I can tell it will just redirect the output of pgrep into /dev/null and then sleep for 0.1. I don't get why there is the OR break either. How does this sleep until the program is open exactly? What if pgrep fails because the application is not open yet?

pgreps exit status is 0 as long as the application is running, so the break will never be evaluated until pgrep fails to find the application. If you start the script before the application is running it will stop directly.

Though I don't know if you really need to poll 10 times per second, seems excessive.
>>
>>51808399
&&
: Run command on the right side only if left side returns non-zero
||: Run command on the right side only if left side returns 0
Programs with linux return an exit code when they terminate. In this case, if pgrep finds the application running, it returns 0, and sleep is executed. Sleep should always return 0 with that command, so the break is not executed. Then the loop restarts from beginning. If pgrep does not find the application, it returns non-zero, and the sleep is not executed. However, now the break executes, and the loop is terminated.
>>
>>51808399
Im not an expert.
If I am wrong please correct me

The key to this script is the "true" word.
If you do "man true" you'll see that true does absolutely nothing, it's purpose is to always return zero.

bash's while loop goes like
while [ condition ]
do
command1
command2
command3
done

And since in your loop the condition is always true then it will always run the command.

Now the command
(pgrep 'application' > /dev/null && sleep 0.1) || break

The double pipe || means that "if the first command returns 0 (succeeds), the second one will never be executed"
So the first part checks if "application" runs (and returned by pgrep) and then waits for 0.1 second.
If the first command fails (ie pgrep doesn't return application) the "break" is executed and the loop ends.
>>
>>51808399
>>51808853
Also this script can be shortened to
while [ $(pgrep application) ]; do sleep 1; done
>>
>>51808756
>>51808813
>>51808853

I think I'm wrong on this, but it sounds like what you're saying is that the script will sleep as long as the application is open? That is not what I wanted, what I wanted was the script to sleep UNTIL the application IS open.

From what I'm understanding here, sleep will execute if pgrep succeeds (ie the application is running) and the loop will break once pgrep fails the loop will break.

then would it not be instead:

(pgrep 'application' > /dev/null || sleep 0.1) && break

?

You want the loop to break when the application is run?

As ridiculous as it may sound what you want to do is replace WHILE in your loop with UNTIL.

so
until [ $(pgrep application) ]; do sleep 1; done
