So since there is no home server thread at the moment so let's call it home server general /hsg/, but actually I'm making this thread to vent a little about Plex.

Why is PLEX such an enormous piece of garbage that doesn't allow you decide for yourself what devices can into HEVC. So here is what PLEX thinks:

>i7 4770k
let's torch the Westmere Xeon instead
>i5 2500k
the Xeon it is
>FX8300
fuck the Xeon
>FX6300
let's kill the Xeon
>i7 2760qm
Xeon, obvioiously
>Samsung S4 Mini
Oh wow an S4 Mini, that's tots fine to play HEVC
>Raspberry PI 2 B+
Mighty RPI2 will be alright

Meanwhile, the RPI2 and the S4 mini are dying and can't play the Stream without massive lags, while the high-end desktop and Notebook CPUs do literally nothing and get transcoded content spoonfed.

The only devices out of the 18 Plex is streaming to, it does decide correctly are high(-ish) end smartphones like my S3 where it doesn't transcode and the content plays flawlessly.

And yeah I can force transcode on the devices having trouble, but I can't make it not transcode to all those computers.

Why wouldn't Plex just allow me to decide what needs transcoding? Or you know, let at least the client decide that it doesn't need transcoding?

I wouldn't hate half as much if Plex wasn't running in a VM and the L5640 had hardware HEVC decoding.

Well spcs and model is what I asked in the email.
If I could install linux on it I would run small apache server to host my website and do all the torrenting on it. Also for general NAS storage. My current setup is Raspberry pi with 1TB hdd + Banana pi still without drives so that would be big upgrade for me.
But I don't know if it is even possible to install any linux distro like debian on that thing.

That's literally what you just said, think about that for a minute.
>>
>>51715105
Well. I was thinking about something snaller than a pc. I know I could propably use microATX, but another problem is power consumption. My bill are high enough. And I only have 3 pc at home so I shouldn't need a really powerful one.

An old laptop perhaps?
Built in screen and keyboard. UPS onboard, low power consumption.
And for extended storage use usb3 or eSATA.
>>
>>51715186
But what do you want to use it for? And do you want to build it yourself or not?

It's pretty much the same as with every computer that your requirements should decide what you get. Low power consumption is just the one part. A Raspberry PI has super low power consumption, but it couldn't transcode shit for example. If it's only more processing power you need a low power NUC or HP Micro server might be the answer, since they can even do virtualisation. But if you do a lot of virtualisation it won't hold enough RAM and can't do ECC RAM (not sure about the HP micro). And if your primary need is storage, you obviously need a much bigger form factor.

>>
>>51715295
Then you would be fine with a simple NAS and I'm talking literally every NAS under the sun.
You should still consider building it yourself, since it allows for expandability, don't go for FreeNAS though, since it has much too high system requirements for you. More like NAS4free.

Or if you just want a small box that can hold 2-4 HDDs just get a Synology NAS (little overpriced though)

Is that an OEM Dell T3500 motherboard jammed into an off the shelve computer case? Absolutely disgusting!

Well NAS seems like a perfect choice. But I almost forgot. It also would be nice if I could connect a printer to it so every pc could use it. Would NAS be good for it too?

Then again the stock case is so disgusting and loud, there's nothing lost (except proper CPU cooling, but you know it's a 60W Xeon so whatever).

The case is a Fractal Define R2 XL btw and I was super happy that that fuckhuge board fit to begin with.
>>
>>51715393
There are print servers for almost every kind of NAS. Not so sure about the all in one boxes though. I would think that they might have a print server addon/jail/whatever though, but that's for you to find out.
>>
>>51715575
Mmm, i kinda like it. I'd have gone with a T5500 though, more processors = better. Might be an upgrade worthy of looking into - since you've maxed out on ram by the looks too.
>>
>>51715624
Ok I'll look it up. Thanks for help.
>>
>>51715715
Thanks, I thought about that too, but electricity prices are crazy in Germany and it's like 180euro per year already and would easily be 260 for the second L5640.
Also I don't really need the additional processing power, then again I wouldn't mind having more RAM for a few more VMs.

I won't upgrade for a while though and when I do I will build a new one with a newer architecture and make this a FreeNAS again.

It's an ECC capable motherboard in the ridiculously overpriced 1366 market. Why does it upset you so much?

>>51716768
>I'm actually surprised that the standoffs line up correctly

Yeah except they don't, I've spent more than a great super fun happy hour figuring out what standoffs I could use (like ITX, mITX, ATX, eATX). It was especially fun since the board needs to be fiddled a little behind the 5.25 bays to get it angled so it fits in the back.

In the end I found 4 matching ones and drilled a 5th for good measure.

And seriously fuck dell with their proprietary bullshit.

I've got a supermicro X8DTE-F, dual socket 1366 ecc capable IPMI interface blah blah blah, for the grand total of £50, not exactly breaking the bank. Plus "the ridiculously overpriced 1366 market" died out 5 years ago matey
>>
>>51720526
wow, really, why the fuck are you this mad?

http://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_odkw=lga+1366&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR4.TRC1.A0.H0.Xlga+1366+mainboar.TRS0&_nkw=lga+1366+mainboard&_sacat=0

cheapest 1366 supermicro (or any server grade motherboard apart from a Dell workstation board) right NOW (for me) is 150 plus 10 euro or 115 plus 65 euro shipping. And I'd consider it expensive for a five year old platform.

I really don't get what and why you are trying to argue with me on what was and is how much in the market I'm living in. Really what the fuck is your problem?
>>
>>51720752
#1 i'm not mad, just curious as to what's up and why it's apparently so overpriced, point taken on that
#2 i'm a different guy than before
#3 it's a lot older than 5 years, that's just when the prices started to drop... think 7 to 8 years since the platform launch
#4 why so defensive
>>
>>51720948

also the cheapest X8DTE-F on ebay.co.uk is currently 107 GBP with shipping. It's so supply and demand.
Boards died, the chips didn't so after 1366 initially got cheaper it got more expensive again.

And I was so defensive because your post was sort of derogatory and implying I wouldn't know what I'm doing.

Anyhow, if there had been that 150 + 10 euro supermicro board back when I built the server, I'd take it, but it was more like 200 then.

I don't see any issue with it. If it made it that long it will probably live forever and the 32nm Westmere Xeons are still fast enough for everything I'm doing.

Better deals with ECC support?
I really don't think so. You could get a server Atom, like the C2550, but that including the board alone is already 300 euro and my L5640 is running circles around it (it's pretty much the same TDP efficiency though). And since newer Xeons are even without board more than the board and CPU combo, I really don't think it's possible. Anyhow I obviously only looked in Germany prices, so maybe it's different where you are from.

Also how do you figure it's unreliable in any way?

>>51722748
I mean they are older, and who knows if you buy second hand cpus what you'll get.

Most likely they were in a climate controlled data center, just look at the reviews and past auctions of the seller. Also buying CPUs used in general is pretty much a non issue since they generally outlast pretty much everything else. Besides Xeons can't really be overclocked anyway making it an even safer buy.

The loudness comes from fans, so yeah, just don't get a rack mount case. Also those have a form factor you can't put in any regular case.

No the dell servers are just as loud.

Also even tower servers are generally really really loud even when they are declared silent. It's because vendors want to make extra certain nothing will die, because of business warranty. You can just exchange the fans though (but this is only a solution for tower servers, since the others rely on airflow)

If you some coin to spend, the Supermicro D1520 (1540?) platform is interesting. Otherwise, InWin and a few others make cases if you want to use a standar mITX board.

If you can find or buy one though, the ILO with the advanced license is useful as hell. And there are 8 port switches that stack on the G8 as well. I have two of those.

Is there anything like Logical Increments for home servers? I'm trying to figure out what hardware I should be looking at getting but I'm kinda lost since I've never built a server before. Like, at what point does it make sense to go with a rack mounted system over a bunch of hard drives and a good CPU in a normal desktop case?

When you have money to burn. If you're not sure you need enterprise level hardware you don't need it. A server is nothing more then an always on computer. If all you're going to do is torrent/stream videos/possibly use a few VMs then a regular desktop fits the bill. Most of the people who have enterprise hardware either got it for free from their jobs because the company was upgrading to new hardware or they got it cheap used somewhere. Only an idiot would buy all new enterprise level hardware for "home server" use.

I know mirrors are the most reliable but I lose so much space.. so, is raidz2 that much worde than raidz3? I reckon it's faster so the resilver will be faster and as long as I check my drives regurarly I should be ok.. right?

What do you guys think? ZFS raidz3 vs. raidz2

That's basically exactly what I want to do. Is the i3-4370 a good choice for CPU? I would go with an AMD build, but I'm willing to pay more for less power consumption.

What is the best choice for a home beginner vm machine? I want to run freenas on it, as well as a thinclient, and possibly multiple servers that are currently on aws. I was thinking of getting old server equipment, for example:

Hey, this looks like the right place to ask. I have an old computer (Dell XPS 625 I think). And I want to use it to host old games, like Unreal, or Doom and shit like that. Simple stuff. What's the best way to go about this. The only OS I've been able to install on it is Windows Server 2008 R2, so I'm going to have to work from there (nothing else seems to take).

It would also be cool to use it to store some random TV shows and movies and what-have-you.

Like I said, I've never set anything like this up before, just basic networking through a router, and the options on this OS are kinda overwhelming. Acronyms I've never seen before and all. I don't need anything fancy.

Oh. One more thing, is I'd like to be able to access the servers desktop from another PC. I don't have the space to keep a bunch of peripherals attached to it.

-Configure static IP
-Enable RDP
-Connect from your desktop through MSTSC
-Install dedicated server version from said games.
-???
-Profit

I really like dlna (over ps3 media server) but not enough of my devices support it, is there any reason other than that you wouldn't use it?

For me it's ideal and I couldn't live without anymore.

What of your devices don't support DLNA?
Smartphone/Android Tablet --> Either paid PLEX App or BubbleUPnP or Plex Web App in Chrome.
Computer/Windows Tablet --> Plex Home Theater or Plex Web App
Kodi --> PlexBMC

also even Amazon Fire TV or Roku
