Old thread is slowing down.

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try GNU plus Linux, you can:

1) Install a GNU plus Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU plus Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU plus Linux (very recommended, for your freedom)

If you are serious about switching to GNU plus Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU plus Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as fedora-wearing scrubs, are in fact, neckbeards, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, 23 year old bums living in their mothers basement plus dank memes. A neckbeard is not a man itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Mountain Dew ecosystem.
>>
I'm a web developer who has ended up taking on more sysadmin-like responsibilities over the years. So I've picked up a decent amount of know-how from setting up web servers and debugging issues with them, but I've never run Linux as a desktop OS (at least not long term).

I'm thinking using it on a laptop day-to-day will expose me to new problems and solutions to them. What distro should I try out though? I use mostly CentOS in my work, so perhaps Fedora? Or maybe I could get more out of it using Arch, but I don't know how much of a time investment that would be. Or should I go for a distro that's actually designed for desktops?
>>
>>51668467
What's your desktop OS now?
>>
>>51668924
Windows 7, with cygwin.

Starting a job with a purely Mac-using team next year too, not looking forward to working with the OSX desktop environment full time. That's one of the motiviations for setting up a linux laptop, so I'll at least be able to fall back onto something somewhat familiar for the first few weeks.
>>
>>51668467
Please don't use Fedora on the desktop, they are NSA botnet and testing ground for RedHat.

I'd suggest Debian Testing without systemd or Debian SID also without systemd.

If you want your desktop usage to be educational about Linux, use Gentoo, and no I am not a dank memer. I have found Gentoo to teach much, much more than Arch by comparison.

Also, Slackware seems to be coming close to a new release. Can always use -current though.

GNU plus Linux*
Sorry, holy Stallman. I forgot to mention Gahnoo.
>>
>>51669143
Why without systemd? I would have thought that was pretty central to the OS?

You should really use Runit, it's the best init out there imo.
P.S- Use Void GNU/Linux

How do I change the kernel version?
I've compiled 4.4.0-rc2, installed it in /boot and updated GRUB but there is no entry when booting and the default option is kernel version 4.0.5.
Please help a retarded anon.
>>
>>51670649
You need to realize something, anon.

In the grub config file, it says to use a specific name of the entry, that means you can name a Gentoo installation Windows, and a DragonflyBSD installation Ubuntu.

As long as you compiled your kernel and replaced the kernel file that gets loaded by GRUB, then you're using your compiled kernel.
>>
>>51670649
type
uname -r in terminal
this will show which kernel you're really running.
>>
>>51670647
meme pls go
>>
>>51670681
How exactly would I replace it? Should I just delete the old kernel files and rename the new ones to the old names? I've just tried to manually load it with GRUB and it told that it couldn't find the kernel I specified (I even renamed it simply linux to make sure to not misspell it).
Also, there is supposed to be the menu entry for the new kernel in the grub.cfg but it seems like it's not loaded since GRUB only shows the usual interface instead of an updated one.

>>51670696
uname -r tells me that I'm still on 4.0.5.
>>
So, this is a bit embarassing, but I've just gone full Stallman and got myself a Thinkpad x200 with libreboot and put Trisquel on it.
Everything works fine, there's only this one thing:
How can I change the icon of the "start" button?
I know you can usually right click it and change it, but this is not working in Trisquel.
>>
>>51671217
For example.
>Old kernel's name is niggerkernel
>Rename old kernel to niggerkernel_old
>Copy new kernel over
>Rename new kernel to niggerkernel
>Create a new entry in GRUB pointing it to niggerkernel_old instead of niggerkernel

You can also tell me what distro you use and post the output of ls in the /boot and post your grub.cfg whatever.

Try the Gnome Tweak Tool. I never use Gnome.

Hey /g/, new to linux and ricing. Before I install my distro I wanted to make sure I was able to install things like openbox on Virtual Box and other stuff to make it look pretty. However when doing a simple task like installing Openbox it brings me to this error. Did I do something wrong in installation or is it just the fact that I'm on Openbox?
>>
>>51665923
Okay, so I wanna install a Ganoo/Loonix distro for programming with i3.

I've got pretty much no GNU/Linux experience, except I once tried Ubuntu - don't feel like returning to it.

Would Debian be a good option, and how would I go about getting that set up?

Thanks.

>inb4 install gentoo
>>
>>51671443
I used the tweak tool excessively, and yet no luck.

>>51665923
noob here. i have a spare harddrive so i thought i could use it for some linux distro, considering the future of windows is not bright i think i should make myself familiar with linux, i've taken the suggestion by OP and now downloading Trisquel. How much shit i'm in? Considering my computer history dates back to golden days of DOS and i'm more comfortable around command prompts than GUIs.

Also i'm really tempted to get gentoo but currently real life matters don't leave me much time to sink with gentoo. Please hold my hands /g/entleman.

Your repos point to the installation cds, not sure why it kept those around. Normally, after install it should populate the sourcel list correctly.

as root add this to "/etc/apt/sources.list", remove everything else from that file.
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main

Those httpredir sub domains should connect with the closest repo to you.
I've not included the non-free and contrib repos, if you want to use software from them, you need to add them too.

And as an advice, understanding package management is one of the core skills on a debian system and linux in general, so you better read up.
