Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

1) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to GNU/Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-*buntus except vanilla Ubuntu (Unity)
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Hey guys, the last thread mentioned a lot about Ubuntu being a botnet distro that should be avoided.

I never see any of debian's docs get recommended as beginner/general resources. Archwiki is great for specifics but if you ever want to sit down and really hit the books, debian.org is where it's at.

What is the point of devfs?
I can create device nodes in my home directory which is ext4, and i can create normal files in /dev, so it doesn't look like devfs serves any special purpose that normal filesystems can already fulfil, so what the fuck is the point of devfs? why not just mount a ramfs on /dev instead of this "devfs"?

I've got a fun question for you all.

I'm upgrading to fedora 23 this afternoon from fedora 21 (same guy as before).

I've been getting super fucking paranoid of late about Linux malware such as key loggers and other root kits.

Assuming such horrible things are on my system, how can I be certain that they are eradicated when the new os is installed?

I've already backed up everything I want to keep, so just formatting my hard drive is an option. I might set up a windoze vm to use malwarebytes to scan my backup for nasty shit, though that will yield false positives because I almost definitely have shit that's bad for windoze in there (I used wine a lot).

For once it's installed, what's good anti-malware for a Linux system? I've got clamav and rkhunter, though I don't really trust either of them.

Stop using a testing sandbox for RedHat.
Stop putting Wangblows on Linux.
Wangblows Anti-virus will not detect Linux malware.

Here's your solution:

Install Debian. (Or Gentoo if you feel like you want to learn Linux.)
Buy 1 kilo (2 pounds) of brain.
Upgrade to Debian SID.
Use stuff unique to Linux instead of malware like Wine.
>>

Dumbiest post I saw here in a while.

You use wine, which is «unique to Linux» he said, to run Windows programs, and then, what ? Do you think it's different than simply browsing with whatever shitty browser you use ? If you get a malware (lol) with wine, it'll be a Windows one on a fucking GNU/Linux distribution, in your $HOME without root access. As Windows users say, just use software downloaded from safe source (like, maybe, the furnisher ?).

The real problem with malware that arises with Wine is if, under the not-so-rare condition that it happens that the Virus is fully compatible with Wine, and thus you can have a Wangblows keylogger running on GNU plus Linux through the very same measures Linux took to make itself more friendly to transferees.

And what if Wine is running as Root? Then you're truly and royally fucked hard in the ass.

Wine is an *UNNECESSARY* vulnerability in GNU plus Linux.

When you guys are talking about securely wiping disks, you need to remember that certain areas of the hard-drive are not directly accessible to your operating system. Not even dban erases everything.

You need to be using the Secure Erase feature built into the firmware of your hard-drive to actually wipe everything.

You can use the hdparm command to control the firmware on Linux.

I wouldn't go so far to say it is impossible. It is possible, just very difficult.

With modern drives (anything manufactured after 2001), a single overwrite pass is regarded as being sufficient, at least according to NIST guidelines for media sanitization.

Again, use the built-in Secure Erase feature on your hard-drive.

With SSDs, Secure Erase hasn't really been fully standardized yet, I'm not aware of any company which actually implements Secure Erase to spec on their SSDs.

Though I suppose this concern is applicable to regular HDDs as well.

You are trusting the firmware on the drive to do what it's saying in any case, whether you're using dedicated sanitization commands or just using the drive normally.

As we know, the NSA has tampered with HDD firmware and developed malware which can tamper with HDD firmware in order to gain persistent access to target systems. So it is not some tin foil fantasy.

Posted this in the last thread and didnt get an answer

I'm trying to use gentoos guide for dual booting in grub2 (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2/Chainloading). If I just add
menuentry "Windows 7 BIOS MBR" { insmod part_msdos insmod ntldr insmod ntfs ntldr (hd0,msdos1)/bootmgr }
windows gives me a /boot/bcd 0xc0000225 error until I restore the MBR (which removes grub2). I tried using grub2probe but it tells me
--hint-bios=hd1,msdos1
doesnt exist, even though thats what the guide says to use. What should I do

AFAIK you can't get rid of it, or ever be sure that the firmware has been tampered with. Like I said you are in a trust relationship with your HDD manufacturer.

To be clear, as far as we (as in the public) know the malware hasn't been preloaded on all drives.

They have only developed a capability to load their malware into the firmware. They either stole the firmware source code (which is proprietary to the drive manufacturer) or got it voluntarily from the drive manufacturers and developed the malware from it. The program has been going on for many years.

>>51635697
Though that's not to say it couldn't be preloaded in specific cases.

They could work with the manufacturer or intercept the hardware in the mail and load their compromised version of the firmware, or actually swap out components with their own modified versions. They've done that with some other equipment, like switches and routers.

That threat only really applies if you're being specifically targeted by them, though.

>>
>>51635748
No, because they could just use the compromised firmware to load malware onto your system once you've booted up and entered your passphrase. They can also load malware onto the system which reads your passphrase as you type it in, similar to an evil maid attack.

It can persist between reformats and re-compromise the machine over and over again.

Like Snowden said, encryption works, but endpoint security is so bad that they can just work around it.

Hey everyone, I have constantly been having this problem and it is frustrating the hell out of me. Whenever I try to boot into a live usb of any linux distribution, my mouse and keyboard refuse to work, no matter which usb port they're plugged into and I've tried them all. See pic related to see the errors output when attempting to boot into the ubuntu live usb. I've tried two different usb's and they both have the same outcome. I've also tried different ports for the usb's and that makes no difference. I am currently using a Razer Deathadder and Razer Blackwidow (pls no razer fag) and this is just frustrating the hell outta me. If anyone would be willing to help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated as I had a crack at linux a few years ago and would definitely love to try it again.

I have plenty of juice for these devices so it must be the former. This could possibly be due to Razer having proprietary drivers that would possibly be needed for use.
