I'm fresh out of high school and got a job at a computer shop deleting viruses off of old people's porn machines. I like the idea of sticking with computers as a career but I'm trying to figure out where specifically to go from here.
>>
how do you mess around with people's operating systems?
do you just like ask their passwords at the start or is there some system that repair shops use?
>>
>>51479688
Ask password.

In 95% of cases its trivial to circumvent a password but it makes everyone's lives easier to just get the password from the get-go and do everything above-board.

It's not too bad. I have a handful of useless certs but I'm realizing my technical skills are getting rusty. Most my my current work involves making sure clients are happy and managing a small group of techs to solve issues for our clients. The clients we service are primarily small to medium sized businesses like law offices, construction and architecture firms, etc.

Not too bad IMO. Sometimes it's mentally engaging, sometimes it's a pain in the ass dealing with autistic business partners who have an aversion to any technological change because

>weve alwayz dun it dis way mane

but overall it's a nice job. I'd like to go towards a technical specialization, a sort of systems architect or something. Management just involves shitting on drones and getting shat on by upper management.

Software engineering, electrical engineering. Keep in mind that costs of living vary from place to place. $100K in DC or NYC is like $40K in Nebraska.
>>

>>

>>
>>51481667
then fucking enlighten us
>>
What can I do as IT/sysadmin stuff to make 100k+ in Los Angeles? Devops? Sr Linux Admin?
>>
>>51481667

You have billion years of experience, perfect techinal skills, have a degree, and be a extrovert to get a high paying job.
>>
>>51481877
>tfw i had basically no experience and my technical skills were merely adequate (but yes, i had a degree, because i wasn't stupid enough to believe /g/ when they said degrees were obsolete), and being marginally personable was enough to get a good job

being a parrot for(/stereotype of) /g/'s autism prevents you from getting a good, high-paying job. avoid taking the retards on this board seriously and you'll start doing better.
>>
>>51481765
Fuck the right people
>>
>>51481915
I don't know where you managed to find a technical job without experience. Most Employers will put your resume in the trash without it. A lot of people struggled finding jobs because they didn't have a internship.

In addition you have to be prepare for technical interviews, where you must either take tests or answer random questions on the spot of a interview. Know where to find job isn't easy because you must complete 100s of people at once.

i always read this shit online but i never ran into any issues getting my first jobs. Yes i stretched the truth and said I knew more things than I did, and Im really personable (i have to try hard, im not naturally an extrovert).

i am >>51481667 and maybe its because im a white man, which is how reddit responded, but i found an intro job 2 years ago making 17 an hour, and now, like i said, make 80k doing not really tough stuff. My boss of course has me learning stuff, which I can't complain. Trying to learn the MEAN stack as we speak.

Search the internet for sample interview questions and talk through them online. On your cover letter, emphasize that you want to learn more, that you are career focused, and are passionate about technology. Make sure to learn about the company and what they do, be ready to make your own suggestions and ABSOLUTELY ask questions. Ask a lot of questions, sound interested, make eye contact.

Also, dont have pink hair. Make sure you're clean shaved and dressed professionally. I'm in Utah, and I wear a CTR ring (mormon thing) even though Im not really a mormon.
>>
>>51481389
Im about t9 graduate highschool soon and i really wanna get into that field im also from michigan what would you suggest i do straight outta highschool
>>
>>51482154
not him but get your A+ and Net +, those are really easy, just buy the mike meyers books on amazon, they're like 30 each. tests are 300 each

that should be enough to get your 40k a year, after that get your CCNA, a little bit more tough but that puts your salary up to around 60. VCP-DCV is a great cert to have these days, its expensive but if you're working as a ccna network tech, sometimes the companies will pay for it. VCP certs get you around 80-90k with 3 years experience.

Thats a pretty good path for the future, once you get there you'll know what you're doing, best of luck

most autistic people seem to have a higher sense of self than they should - they think they deserve to be in some middle management or upper management admin role. you don't get to start there, and you certainly don't deserve to end up there just on the basis of your self-evaluation. you have to start at an entry level.

keep this in mind, start humble, and you'll do fine.
>>
>>51482154
Get a job work at any tech company, doing anything. And job hop your way up.
>>
Do people really give a fuck if I job hop from a shitty position to less shitty in a short timeframe?
>>
>>51482441
what? no. upward movements are fine. the only objectively bad things on a resume are
- long stints of nothingness
- lots of horizontal moves (especially across multiple companies)

you could argue that a lot of worthless certs are bad, but that depends on whether that's 90% of your resume or not. people will just ignore a laundry list of worthless certs if you have an otherwise substantial resume (note that i'm not saying all certs are worthless; just that a list of the worthless garbage ones is not going to help you much)
>>
PSA: Don't don't write shitty code in interviews!!

I can't believe I even have to say this, but I'm interview people and 9/10 of you faggots do this.

>muhmuhmuh it doesn't have to be high quality, it's just for this interview

Nigger do you really think I need some code that can determine the winner in a game of poker right this minute?!

I'm trying to find out if you can write high quality, modular, testable, extensible software that resolves my problems in an effective way.

You just writing some shitty 20 line main method that can't be tested or reused for shit does not help that.

If in doubt, just fucking ask. Clarifying requirements would be part of your fucking job anyways. Just say "hey, do we want this production quality or are you just interested in the algorithmical aspect of this?"
>>
>>51482465
Well, I don't have very much experience at all, but I have no stints of unemployment or history of horizontal moves.

Currently I'm a part-time junior sysadmin making $10/hour in addition to doing retail sales part time, looking to get some basic certs and move up.

Best of luck for your job searches. As long as you are keen and have a good personality it can get you far.

For me, I applied to about 25 different companies. From those I got about 15 interviews then 5 followup interviews. Only 1 offer (that I took) while another had me and 4 other people compete for 3 places out of state. Because I already accepted the first offer I withdrew from the second company (even though i liked them more).

First, checked. Second, stop posting like a faggot. Finally, check out different certificate programs at your local community college and see if they can roll into an AS degree. You could get a cert and a help desk job pretty quickly and figure out what you really want to specialize in. After that you have plenty of options, finish AS degree and get a better job, finish AS and get a BS degree, maybe even grad schooling some day.

There is no "best" computer related career, so start small and figure out what you enjoy the most.

If you want to work with servers get on the cloud engineering path. Everything is moving that direction. In 10 years the sysadmin role will look much different than today since much of the things we do will be provided aaS instead of hosted on prem. I anticipate that as we see internet bandwidth cheapen and network bandwidth increase you'll see even storage and VDI move off prem.

A real game changer will be once we start seeing affordable 10Gb switches. Like when Netgear and Linksys start making $100 8 port unmanaged 10GbE switches. It'll drive down the price of 40/100gig and L2ME may make more sense for businesses. I don't think anyone expected. 1GbE to be leader for so long. I remember when I had 1GbE switched network at home and I'd have people fighting over who got to move into my empty room.

it's pretty cool, you have 10 weeks of high-intensity school once a year with every subject lasting 1-3 weeks and (mostly) teach you enough to get a cert in that subject afterwards.

Does "freelance consulting" count for anything when an employer sees it on a resume? Granted I plan to get my BA and aeveral certs before i start looking for an IT job in earnest.

I mean I've done work ranging from building several office computers at once, like a small fleet for an accounting company. To building $3k+ X99 based builds for work stations.

On my own time and out of personal interest I've been using a personal server as a VPN, playing with VMs etc. Both in Linux and windows.

Before getting hired at my current warehouse job I applied to geek squad. Had an informal interview with their main manager because he just happened to be there. After talking to me for about 20 minutes, he said they dont hire without a degree, but even without a degree or certs, I'm over qualified and would intimidate his associate manager.

Can't say since I don't want to be identified. I was brought on as a "system administrator", knew the company hired rather stupid people, and figured I could easily do a week's work in about one or two hours. This turned out to be true as I properly configured all the servers that would constantly go down and I also wrote programs to automate many tedious tasks that were done manually for years. My job now is largely project management and technical oversight of software implementations. (I used to be a systems software developer/designer.)

Crazy thing is, I suspect many would be happy earning what I make but I am extremely unhappy. It really chafes me that the difference in salary is so minuscule for widely varying levels of ability. Yeah I got mad lucky. Friend of my dad got me a position working part-time for minimum wage doing helpdesk IT stuff. Showed my manager that I knew my shit to some degree and he started letting me handle the linux servers and fixing various services he couldn't figure out. Took on more and more responsibilities. Then the manager quit, and the other guy he hired after me wasn't as up to speed as I was, so I became a de facto sysadmin. He left too and I ran IT by myself for a year. After that I created my own job position handling auditors and security stuff.

I moved from the SF Bay Area to a not-so-small city in Oregon. It's amazing, as soon as you get out of Portland here it turns into backwarter bumfuck tard-land. Like, probably 20% of people here say "supposably", and I've actually heard someone say weary when they meant wary. Back in the Bay Area I went to the rock climbing gym to climb, lift weights, and take yoga and spin classes. Here? Nothing but some retardedly overpriced traditional gyms full of sweaty old people.

And the trucks. The lifted tard-mobiles driven by absolute morons. They're fucking everywhere.

Anyway, I really want to live in Seattle, SF, or NYC. Or Los Angeles where I can enjoy some of the best motorcycling in the country.

I got an offer today for a job that pays half of what i am and they sounded so happy to be offering it at such a high pay scale. I shut them down quick by saying id take a 5 dollar pay cut but thats it... atill 10 over their offer. Looking for east coast right now, but sadly this country has given moat away except for what econically not feasible too, and they pay low, thats why its economically okay to stay here. OP, spend your time in the shop wisely. Learn about VLANs, ACLs, cross connects, VPNs, firewalls, Cisco, AD, etc. If there's any old equipment available, make your own fileserver for your AV software. Get a raspberry pi at home and make it a VPN server with openvpn. Learn Linux. The shop is a great place to learn and you could double your salary in 6 months if you learn fast. I'm under 25 and I already make what my parents raised me on.

Also make sure you use Tron for your virus removals. The only thing you have to run manually is ComboFix. Before I left the shop I had completely automated my job thanks to Tron. It's on reddit.

You don't. They won't. They'll find another schmuck to do it. Focus on doing the best work you can, and looking for a new job somewhere else. That's how you get raises: by leaving.

Seriously, people have no idea how to value software folks. None at all. So they underpay and then they're SHOCKED when you leave and they have to hire two or more people to replace you.

>what should i do with root access to their db if they dont?

Nothing if you value your career. Assuming what you're saying is true, it will look great on a resume.

I'm a freshman in computer science, but I'm afraid the math is too much for me as well as debt.

Should I just get my A+ and Net+ certifications and drop out?
>>
>>51485813
That's not true. I am a Civil Engineer. I commonly use Abaqus, NX 10/NX Nastran, and BIM frequently.
>>
>>51499991

No, you should pursue a different career entirely.

Become an accountant and be the best spreadsheet guy in your department.

Fuck accounting I'd shoot myself, I just really hate Discrete Mathematics.

Is a degree in Information Technology worth it? Or will certifications and more experience be better?

Wait until you're ten years into a software engineering career.

Or IT. How many times can you be called to the CEO's office because he forgot his password again? (true story)

Was a techie that stayed in town, managed to get in at the ground floor and work my way up. I heard this is how many get into these jobs after college.

Quiet on many days, given plenty of time to work on my projects, am not a neckbeard autist so I can chat up the grad students, my employees do not suck although they are a bit unmotivated because we automate the shit out of everything, and everyone enjoys our work. Going to see if I can get my Masters simultaneously in an unrelated subject to my degree, or possibly some mgmt certs, not sure what at present.
