I think my 980 will serve me well, I am totally fine with medium textures so by the time the 980 can't run the latest and greatest, I'll probably upgrade to something light years ahead of the 1080.

I upgraded from SLI 680s to the 980 ti. If the 1080 ti is more than twice as fast as the 980 ti and is $500 - $600 I'll probably sell the 980 ti and pick up a 1080 ti. Have 4k monitor.

If they didn't release these cards knowing about the PCI-E power draw then it's even worse, because that means they're actually incompetent. They probably knew about it and decided the issue isn't serious enough to delay their launch, because it really shouldn't be. Most mobos have multiple x16 PCI-E slots, as such they should be capable of handling at least 150W, one single card pulling very slightly over 75W on average won't be an issue in most situations at all.
