Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

I have gotten curious about bootleg watches and have decided to buy a nomos from aliexpress for up to $20. Is there any particular fake which is most worth buying?

Why do RGM watches cost tens of thousands of dollars?

Does it really cost so much to produce a mechanical watch? Or do they just want to compete with Rolex etc?
>>
>>55217019
It really does cost a considerable amount to produce a well made mechanical movement. Especially in small quantities.
These aren't your $2 aliexpress movements.

Of course that's not to say there isn't a large profit margin.

Quick shot of my new Astron I got today. Initial impressions are very positive. It might not seem like it from pictures but it's actually very legible and easy to read the time from a glace despite all the stuff going on with the dial. Speaking of the dial I'll try to get a better another but there is some really nice depth and dimension to it. Also I was a little worried about it but the strap is super comfortable.

What does /wt/ think of this watch. I currently have an eco-drive that I love but want something a bit more elegant with leather band for other occasions.
$4.50 off ebay so probably can't go wrong, or will I just hate the quality of it.
I think what I like about it is the elegant looking face and I do like the rounded glass bezel.

Anyone have any suggestions of similar maybe better quality without breaking the bank?

When you guys say 38-42 and 40 is that a measurement of the glass?
>>
>>55220096
Rodina says ~38mm, but people say it looks more like 40 in person.
>>
>>55220025
The round portion of the case is 38mm, but due to the long lugs it wears as if it was more like ~41mm with traditional lugs.
Lug to lug is more important than case diameter.

Now that everyone has a cell phones which work perfectly fine as timepieces, wristwatches are basically just a symptom of millennial narcissism. They're for superficial pseudoyuppies who want to look "classy" and impress people with their taste/wealth, much like niggers who buy ridiculous cars to attract women or some kind of chimp showing off his impressive cock size in the jungle.

List literally one practical application of wristwatches besides the ape tier logic of "I'm attracted to shiny things and it will make other people think I'm cool." There are a few reasonable excuses like a profession where you're not allowed to carry a cell phone. I'm listening.

I just don't get the thought process here. I mean it's literally retarded.

Pocket watches were he norm until wrist watches came about and were more convenient.
So, now people argue that wrist watches are irrelevant because you always have a clock in your pocket, essentially a pocket watch. A proven less convenient way of telling time.

I just don't even.

Nah, it's about 2.5Hz, though I've never counted that would be my guess.

This is it's first ever service, was worn continuously from 1976 to 2004, and from 2007-2010. Just a few weeks ago I put it on and it was suddenly losing seconds on the hour. Lube probably went.

Really tough movement, I hear Tissot and Omega were manufacturing under the same roof back then.

>>
>>55222355
18000 bph is pretty damn pedestrian, but sure explains why the watch was able to run for so long without a proper service. The Seiko 44 caliber and the Bulova Caliber 11 are more or less the same in terms of reliability- slow beatrate means a lot more resilience.

As for Tissot and Omega, the two were joined at the hip and part of the same company back in the day. Seiko came surprisingly close to acquiring the holdco after it was done fucking them with the Penisquartz in the early 1980s.

Are there any watches I can wear while riding my motorcycle?

I have an orient bambino, but I recall reading to not wear it as the vibrations will fuck up the mechanics over time.
>>
>>55223445
Will do, but it's not as nice as yours. It's a round-case steel with a white dial and date window.

And yes, they're great watches for the money right now. For the price of the servicing I could have bought another one, with change to spare. But it's been in my family for 40 years, so I'm happy to hang the expense.
>>

Am I witnessing the birth of a new vintage meme?

It seems there are plenty of Seastars to go around on eBay, but they are either pristine NOS examples selling for several hundred dollars, or beat-to-shit pieces of junk with obvious signs of water ingress. The ones that do not fall into either one of these camps look suspicious, ie may be re-dials or frankens. So I'm not sure how easily this one can catch on.

At some point I'd like to have one of these, especially with the barrel case, but I've spent a lot on the acquisition and servicing of my 5216 and 7018. So it may have to wait for a while. I'll hold out my hopes for finding one in a pawn shop or at a yard sale- not great places to look for JDM Seikos, but maybe good for old Tissots.

Keep in mind TAG, like other companies, they have separation department, teams, equipment and policy. When you're spending big bucks on a mikrogirdir I think you are actually getting something quite good (albiet quite expensive.) Expensive pieces like that not made by the same processes and people and to an entirely different standard.

That being said, a lot of their stuff under 10k just isn't good. You end up paying quite a hefty fucking tax for that "TAG" logo.
>>
>>55224637
When I think Tag, I think of a fat man intentionally fanning out his arms when he walks, in an attempt to look tough.

If you're going to pay the certified tax, get something tasteful.
>>
>>55224737
>>55224783
I understand that Tag is notorious for putting brand above quality. But they certainly aren't the only ones with such tricks:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f2/smoke-mirrors-part-1-eta-grades-explained-458060.html

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f66/smoke-mirrors-part-2-eta-modifications-upgrades-501831.html

For the watch I'm showing for example, the quality is pretty solid. The movement is an ETA 2892A2, which is a solid piece, working properly on +/- 4 seconds / day (measured). For the price I paid (second hand) I'm very happy with the quality. And this piece is around 10 years old.

Buddy, did I at any point imply that my moorune Seiko wasn't somehow a meme?

If the Seastar is going to become the next (and first non-Jap) vintage meme, I want to buy into it before it gets expensive. Also, for the record, not all Seastars were created equal. Some, such as those that use the 2770 movement, have a shitload of plastic parts and not much jewelling. All part of Tissot-Omega's cost reduction efforts to stay afloat in the late 70s.

>>55224737
The mechanicals are really nothing to write home about. Dressed-up ETA movements everywhere, and of course the whole "in-house, generously provided by Seiko" scandal. Aldo look up Simon Crane's TAG video on YouTube.

Of course not. Being completely vertically integrated like Rolex or Seiko is a rarity. Nothing wrong with buying the movement from someone else. But there is something wrong with using another manufacturer's movement while blatantly misrepresenting it as something you designed yourself in order to charge a premium, which is what TAG did.
>>
>>55226133
Again, TAG is not the only manufacturer that does the rebranding of existing ETA movements. See the links in >>55224921
>>
>>55226133
ah yes, of course. there is is certainly something better about in house movements, and the start to finish independence of the brands you mentioned are definitely things to be proud of.

I wasn't necessarily defending Tag, but I point to them being shoddy when I dislike them. I don't mind companies charging shit loads for something I don't want anyway.

misrepresenting the product is pretty shitty though

Not much of a fan of yellow gold myself, rose gold is quite nice though.
>>
>>55226021
I'm working on the autofap complication.

It's a mechanical arm that extends from a second crown on the watch and then wraps around your dick. The automatic movement powers the arm through a fapping lever, and causes it to stroke up and down. I was originally using a modified ETA 2824, but found the 28800 beat rate was causing climax to occur too early (it was for this reason that a 36000 bph movement was never considered, although the hi-beats may work well for the women's version, which is currently in the planning stages). I'm now using the "lo-beat" Seiko 5106 instead, which is working much better in that regard. I would have even considered quartz but I don't think the stepper motor has sufficient torque to drive the arm.

Fortunately I got most of them at under 50% of retail (except for the vintage King Seiko which I don't plan to sell in the near future), so I'm not too concerned about that. It's more whether or not a balanced collection of good quality but undermarketed watches (not talking about meme-seikos here, more like Sinn/Fortis/Tutima) beats one great quality, universally recognized and sought-after watch.

How do I rid myself of my insane hatred of fat people?
>>
>>55232484
Why would you want to?
>>
>>55232586
I mean, I live in Burger land and they're practically everywhere so I might as well get used to them. I don't even see them as human, my hatred is too edgy for me.

I think it's kind of ugly myself but it's a Seiko so it'll be fine.

What watch are you guys purchasing to celebrate this glorious day? The day the United Kingdom has banished its oppressors and went on the path to restore its greatness. Fuck the EU. God save the Queen
>>
>>55233523
I would prefer an Alpinist if I was getting a watch with a green face, but it's not bad I guess.
Would probably look better with a brown band.

Yeah I have no idea why.
The 3001 works with more straps and bracelets though
I really fucking love this little thing. I think I'm gonna get another pulsar digital to see if it's as good.
>>
>>55235036

Swap the strap to just plain leather instead of that crocogator pattern one and it'll be fine.
>>
I can get any new watch on -24% sale,
Should I get something fancy and sell it forward for small profit?
Post suggestions.
>>
>>55235036
How casual are we taking here? Lowest I would go would be a button down shirt like an Oxford, some jeans, and basic leather shoes like brouges or desert boots. I mean that's my definition of casual to the point where you would be wearing a nice watch. Anything more casual than that and you should just wear a cheap Casio.

That's one other thing I've been thinking about. We never actually talk about the mechanics or technology of watches (save for like two or three guys), just the aesthetic qualities. So why not just move over to /fa/? They have watch threads there fairly often.
>>
>>55235117

Go with a Rolex. They hold their value very well and have very good resale value.

Deployment VAT discount.
>>
>>55235180
Pardon my ignorance but what's that?
No big deal, anyway, doesn't your country have places where VAT, or its equivalent, isn't applied?
>>
>>55235117
If you want to make a profit better be buying pre-owned, or very specific high end pieces like limited pateks to not lose a chuck off the top, just like buying a car -- the value goes down right after it gets transferred to you.
>>
>>55235206
Value-added tax, it's everywhere except in US and its applied to everything.
Problem is I have to buy the product locally and from a shop. Doesnt have to be new thought.
>>
>>55235214
I have been dreaming 5227 patek but they are way over my budget.
I was thinking investing max 3k€.

No, I know what VAT is, I wanna know what the "deployment vat discount" is.
There are some places where VAT isn't applied at all already.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campione_d'Italia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livigno
VAT shouldn't be applied to used goods though, is it?
>>55235267
>has to pay to cure cancer induced by the low quality food and poisoning his government approved
>>
>>55235249
Get something pre-owned if you want a chance at being able to resell it for what you paid for/a little potential extra anytime soon.

Maybe a pre-owned JLC master control date? Might be hard to find at that price though.

>>55235284
But with all the money we saved on that cheap food we can cure cancer twice! assuming we haven't blown it all on watches.
>>
>>55235284
Alright, technically it isn't deployment discount. I'm not sure what is is called but basicly we can buy everything without
Vat aslong as we take the gear with us, I already bought laptop and combat boots for a good price.
>>55235295
Smart looking piece.
>>
>>55235345
Oh, deployment as in military, now I get it.
>>
>>55235284
>VAT shouldn't be applied to used goods though, is it?
To my knowledge if VAT was applied to it when new it is applied used also.

why do you want a jlc or patek for a military deployment just get a gshock

theyre not even 100m water resistant
>>
>>55235409
I assume he's looking at a watch he'll wear when not in the trenches.
>>
>>55235409
I'm pretty sure he doesn't plan to wear a patek in action and also that he doesn't need a discount to get a g-shock.
