i need to replace the e10s soonish because the little grill bit on the tube is falling off too much lately, though I like their sound and feel, considering just getting another pair since i spent enough time getting them to be perfect.

Only thing that worries me is that people describe the hf5 as bright. Are they actually bright, or are people just so used to bassy headphones that they think they sound bright in comparison? I sort of like the sound being very slightly on the warm side, but the re-400 are probably too much.

I'd like some headphones and a microphone I can more or less glue to them. I'll be damned if I pay some kike 50 dollars for one though (looking at you, modmic).

Budget: No more than 100 dollars for both. Seems ridiculous, I know, but there's a reason here.

Location: Land of the free and the home of the whopper

Preferred type: on ear, unless you can suggest a breatheable over ear

Preferred tonal balance: I don't even know what that means. I am looking for as entry level as you can get, so I guess balanced?

Preferred music: this isn't specifically for music. I listen to mostly rock music, but this is primarily for video games and the skype calls involved.

Past headphones: some decent enough sony earbuds that I can't possibly identify because there's so goddamn many variants over the years. Panasonic RP-HTF600-S with which I am entirely satisfied with the exception of the earpieces getting my ears hot and sweaty.

I wish to stress: entry level. I am accustomed to the highest tier logitech headset that isn't gaymur crap. I don't need anything better than that.

K553 Pros are pretty good and neutral to my ears. I picked mine up for $120 (prior to the massdrop), and it's the best pair of cans I've ever owned in that price range. The only possible complaint I have is that long-term comfort isn't that great, but I'm sure I could mod to make it manageable if I had to.

Might end up picking up HP50's as an upgrade at some point, but I am very satisfied with the K553 at the moment.

It depends on whether you wanted fun or accuracy. k701 for accuracy, q701 for fun.
>>
>>55203128
AKGs are really damn good. I got a pair of 612s.

Before I purchased them, I saw a lot of comments about people complaining that the bass on them is really bad, to the point where they sound just really "electric" and like treble machines, therefore bad for DnB or whatever the fuck you listen to that has a lot of bass.

Now, after using them, I can tell you that the bass on these is just perfect. Never have I felt that it was too weak or anything like that.

I really wonder what these kind of people expect from headphones. So much bass that you can't even hear the song's tune anymore?

Just make sure you have a decent DAC/AMP combo for these.
>>

There's a mod on the k701/2 where you remove a pad for more bass/v shape.
It seems for the q701 that Quincy Jones himself removed each pad.

But i won't be able to compare anything, as i don't have a reference.
I just have my beyer custom one pros, and thoe portapros.

>>55203410

I have trouble to find a good amp. I think i lack the exact keywords to do a proper research.

Is there a place that accurately shows what good combos there are? A buyer guide?

Mid-tier, and above, audio components shouldn't be gambled on generic chink shit.
>>
>>55203587
These are nice. Little trebly though.
>>
>>55203686
While I do agree with you on that, there have only been a small handful of times where I needed to EQ them to get rid of the hard "s" sounds.

I personally really like the treble bump.
>>
>>55199493
>Then I will correct what I wrote earlier. Only the treble will be affected by repositioning not the entire spectrum as you claimed.
the entire spectrum is affected. only the treble is affected by a significant amount.
>Nor, as the papers pointed distinction lays bare, is it caused by the "seal" on the HD800.
the goal of the article is to show the effects of driver repositioning. if the measurements for the experiment had been containing the leakage effects shown in the HD 800S measurements i posted earlier, it would show up in the data sets. they eliminated this variable for the purpose of measuring the driver repositioning.

The 702's don't look bad, but I'm on the fence about the DT880's.
I'll be abroad for about a year and I don't plan on bringing an amp with me (Just the Fulla DAC). Would the 600ohm be worth it if I'm not going to have an amp to drive them, for a while atleast?
>>
Can someone give me the graph comparisons of DT880 600 ohm and DT880 250 ohm. I forgot the reason why it's better over the other. Right now I only recall that the distortion is lower on the 600 ohm I think and it's for people who own studio amps or OTL tube amps.
>>
>>55205385
Actually nvm found those graphs.
http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/comparison-beyerdynamic-dt-880-32-ohm-dt-880-250-ohm-and-dt-880-600-ohm-headphones-page-2

Okay so Tyll says that the damping factor is better on the 600 ohm DT880. Do I really have to sell my 250 ohm DT880 and get 600 ohm to be a part of /hpg/? I now have buyers remorse. Or is 600 ohms for OTL tube amps because of the low distortion.

>>55205372
No idea. /hpg/ mindset is all about the 600 ohms I recall.
>>
>>55205385
>>55205485
Goldenears graphs are usually more reliable. DT880 600 Ohm is the best version and it's the only version that it should be considered. 250 Ohm is the same shit as 32 Ohm: if you don't have a powerful amp and if you don't mean to invest money on the 600 Ohm, you'd rather get the 32 Ohm version, which is cheaper and not worse than 250 Ohm. Don't listen to Tyll, his measurements suck, as do his personal reviews.
>>
>>55205628
Someone said that Goldenears graphs can be new or old measurement equipment. Is the DT880 measurements from Goldenears the new measurements?

90% of audio products consumers nowadays are underaged children that just look for "muh ear-violating bass", then it's not amazing that AKG open models are looked upon by most people even here. It's their loss, they'll probably never experience how a good headphone is supposed to sound.

There isn't such a thing as pairing amplifiers and headphones. You want to consider basic stuff like amplifier output power, frequency response, noise levels, distortion and output impedance. Here the product quality scales with performance and headphones aren't part of this equation. Extra features like multiple I/O options, gain adjustment or portability might be worth considering. Same applies to build quality(e.g. volume pot, cable terminals) or aesthetics.

Delivering current to a pair of headphones is not rocket science nor is it costly. For many headphones a good on-board is all you need and something like O2/Magni achieves performance above what you'll be able to hear with plenty power to spare. Only a few special case headphones come to mind where you might want something more than those: Hifiman HE-6 as well as the discontinued HE-4 and AKG K1000. The reason for this is the low sensitivity of these models. Electrostatic headphones need an amplifier designed for such loads but beyond that the criteria isn't any different.

I'm on mobile and too lazy to search the archive but we have an amplifier/DAC checklist which gets posted here occasionally and applies to most questions regarding those products. Imo it should be in the OP with none of the "frowned upon" -crap.

This is going to be far fetch but, what is the absolute best IEM, only an IEM, for mixing and producing that can be had for <450?

To give you an idea of what I'm used to, I mainly use an ATH IM02 and the ATH M50.
>>
>>55208855
Etymotic ER-4S or ER-4B

Is it supposed to be very neutral sounding, and flat?

What about the UM Pro 30?

>>
>>55208908
Yes, very flat. The DF target makes a lot of sense for canalphones and the ER-4B hits it more accurately than any other in-ear on the market. 4S is slightly warmer but I'd imagine that most people would call even that one bright.

The Westone would be considerably worse than your IM-02 here, being kind of similar in response but with the coloration exaggerated.
>>
>>55208984

I'm mostly concerned about soundstage, instrument separation, and frequency response.

Given it's an IEM, soundstage is properly shit but would the instrument separation and frequency response be comparable to an M50?

Also, how is the ER4's treble extension? I prefer higher extensions. I tried an SE535 today, and I liked it except that it had poor treble extensions.
>>
>>55209020
Soundstage and instrument separation are very much tied into the frequency response.

You won't have any kind of "out of your head" experience with in-ears(or with any headphones I've ever tested for that matter) but the accuracy of the response after a proper insertion will make it very easy to locate sounds. This is mainly a question of mixing rather than the headphones.

ER-4 -lineup goes up to 16-17 KHz before dropping whereas SE535 basically drops at 10 KHz and comes up as a lone peak near 15 kHz iirc. Up to 16 KHz is about the range of meaningful extension during listening because of auditory masking and rapidly lowering sensitivity in the uppermost range of our hearing. Accurate response in these regions is nearly impossible for any headphones.

SE535 is a dark sounding in-ear with poor extension but imo excellent comfort.

Having owned M50 and ER-4P/S, M50 sounds downright boomy compared to them. I disliked M50 because of its coloration. Bass is easy to tone down but the upper-mid and treble is too uneven and peaky.

DT880 600 Ohm is a great headphone, it's fairly neutral with a slight V-shape sound signature, but it needs a good amp. Fidelio X2 is bassy and dark, but it's very easy to drive and can sound good on almost anything. Other recommendations:
1) HD600 : neutral-warm signature
2) K702/K701/Q701: neutral-bright signature

There are plenty of anons who own or have used/owned those. Not sure how many still bother to lurk these threads.

As one of the owners, here's my summary:

-It's super comfortable
-It's build well and feels high quality when in use, parts are replaceable and washable
-It's easy to drive with any half decent headphone amplifier
-It has little to no pad leakage problems, location on your ears doesn't really alter the response
-It's bright and somewhat harsh sounding without any EQ
-It's expensive
-Although unlikely to ever be audible in either, the HD 800(non S) has notably low distortion

I bought one because I was not really bothered with the stock response and wanted something that does everything I can't alter with EQ really well. Basically I knew I was going to be using a really carefully tuned EQ profile for it before purchasing.

It's an amazing headphone in every other aspect than stock sound signature. Something like HD 600 is much nicer sounding without any mods or DSP. That said HD 800's response is far from bad and after the EQ, I can't really think any other headphone I'd want. There's really nothing to "upgrade". I haven't even considered purchasing new pairs and all the rest of my headphones have gone unused since I got these. I have to mention that I got a killer deal for them. So good that I could still probably sell them and get my money back. I'd never pay retail for these unless I was literally swimming in money.

I'd consider both bass light and bright but in a different way.

I just got the HF5s today. I can't fault these things. Detailed, clear and neutral. Sure they sound boring, but that's how I like it. However, I can't say I'm impressed. I was using brainwavz deltas before these, and these feel like a sidegrade at best, for $80 more. Not to mention they have worse build quality than the $20 deltas. I'm not sure if the deltas are just an amazing value or something.

So overall, it's really hard for me to dislike the sound, which doesn't happen very often, but these are definitely going to be the end of the road for me in terms of upgrading. Thanks for helping me out.

But that's wrong you fucking retard.

Decibels are decibels to the eardrum, it doesn't matter if it came from a speaker or a headphone. You can cause hearing loss in the same way with speakers that you can with headphones.
>>
>>55217321
There's a massive difference to the cilia in your ear between listening to regular noise and blasting sound directly into your ear at point blank range, while at the same time trapping energy inside to bounce around because the openings of your ears are plugged.

Hearing problems due to widespread headphone use are already becoming a major issue in the medical community.

No.

Forget music, 80dB of white noise on speakers is equivalent to 80dB of white noise on headphones, this is at the eardrum. There is literally no difference, it's just waves.

Based on empirical evidence, it's more likely for headphone users to cause hearing loss because of bad practices.
>>
>>55217467
>No

Yes

>it's more likely for headphone users to cause hearing loss because of bad practices.

Any use of headphones for more than an hour a day at about half of max volume is already bad practice. Most people are using them for multiple hours a day and blasting them with sound levels similar to a rock concert. The person who invented ear buds should be in prison.

I currently plug my headphones into the wired remote of a set of Logitech Computer speakers (and my Nexus 5 phone when I'm not home). I am willing to get improved source equipment if it means a substantial quality improvement. I still will sometimes be using them straight out of my phone though. Portable amp is doable but dunno if it's really worth it.
>Preferred type of headphone
No strong preference, but probably full-sized since I assume they have better value.
>Open or closed
No strong preference, but probably open since I assume they have better sound.
>Comfort level
High comfort level is extremely important. My ears stick out very far so on-ears are a no-go unless they are clip-ons like the Koss KSC75. I am not willing to sacrifice comfort for sound quality whatsoever.
>Preferred tonal balance
Balanced, accurate, possibly "wow" factor as well if possible (the kind of thing that when the music climaxes it is really visceral).
>Preferred music
I listen to an extremely wide range of music (virtually every genre with good material) so a well-rounded pair of headphones is essential. I listen to electro-dance and hip hop perhaps a bit more than other genres so a "wow" factor would be a great bonus. I listen to a lot of drone and noise as well though so generally balanced I guess is what would be optimal.
>Past headphones
Grado SR-60: decent, extremely uncomfortable, boring sounding
Koss KSC75: insane value, absurdly comfortable (all-day wearing was possible), great sound + positional accuracy, far too fragile though, have bought several pairs and always hear heavy buzzing after a few months; strongly prefer over Grados

Thanks in advance for any help.

>>55218437
Nothing that doesn't fall into simple differences in manufacturing. They are basically identical aside from sensitivity and impedance. We've been over this multiple times lately. There's an unfounded claim in many audiophile circles that the 600 Ohm is somehow better but I've yet to see any evidence to support that.

>>55219775
Nothing here can be shown to be caused by the different impedance versions and there are graphs which show a complete opposite where all versions are more or less the same.

>>55219819
Even if the small differences here were caused by the different impedances, I wouldn't pick the 600 Ohm version based on those plots.
>>
>>55221190
Is there a reason to avoid 32/80 ohm Beyers?
>>
>>55221248
Pricing, availability. If you have a powerful source or already own a headphone amplifier, you might want to consider getting one of the less sensitive versions. Sensitive headphones along with a powerful amplifier will force you to use high attenuation on the pot which limits how smoothly you can control volume, makes it possible to suddenly turn the volume too high and because of how pots work, you might run into channel imbalance in the extreme end of attenuation(volume knob turned nearly all the way down).

Am I also wrong in saying they have almost no mid range? I just watched the Trailer for Nier 2 & noticed the vocals in the background music of the trailer basically disappear on these things, yet show up clear as day on the free headphones that came with my phone.

Are the Xiaomi Hybrids any good? Also are the Xiaomi Capsule's any good?

Besides the price point, what's the difference between these two?

it's not awful, but it could use some more work.
you need to lower your preamp more to eliminate clipping. the graph has to be below the 0dB line when "Add pre amplifying" has been ticked off.
you want a 3 dB upwards slope from 200-300 Hz to 1 kHz. right now it's sloping downwards.
use higher Q-values to sort out the treble peaks so you don't scope out the entire treble.

best charts are innerfidelity or goldenear? or something else?

IF and korean GE
clarityfidelity is good too, but doesn't have a lot of measurements yet
>>
>>55230113
Understanding how each of the couplers work on each site and what kind of compensation and smoothing they use is a must. It's important that the measurement methodology is documented and shown. It good to have same headphones measured by multiple different sites.

We have a nice list of sites with plots in the wiki now.

yeah, i've enjoyed the e10s quite a bit after i eq'd them a bit to be more flatish, they are more bass heavy than the e80s are supposed to be tho

Can someone link me a really small like 4 inch 1/8th inch male to RCA male cable?

I'm either finding female to male or really fucking long like 2 meter cables.
>>
>>55230459
>>55230474
the first graph comes from i site i don't find reliable, so i'm not going to comment on that.
based on the second graph, which i assume is uncompensated, it looks like the upper mids are lacking by about 5-7 dB in the 2-4 kHz area, and almost 10 dB too amplified between 5 and 8 kHz.
not really too sure about the trustworthiness of that graph either though.

Any comments on the SMSL M2?

Thinking about getting one for my phone.

Location is loud. HVAC systems are running which prevent me from talking at a normal level to a person 10 feet away, but then again some of my coworkers are hyper-sensitive. I need isolation from both incoming and outgoing sound.

Physically laptop's spdif for now, need a dac.

Software-ily have original sources in flac, but generally listen to ~96kbps vbr ogg opus happily. May re-encode as my hardware improves.

etymotic 4p. loved the quality and isolation, but my ear jelly clogs them up quick and require constant cleaning. I'm willing to get some unwieldy headphones to forego cleaning.

What's the tape mod? Why do you think buying them was a mistake? You bought them because you liked the way they sounded right?
>>
>>55233292
>What's the tape mod?
Something Tyll Hertsens came up with
www.innerfidelity.com/content/evaluation-grado-stock-and-modified-ear-pads

Why do you think buying them was a mistake?
I bought them in 2011 and have used them for years and I always thought they sound good.

You bought them because you liked the way they sounded right?
I bought them years ago and I stuck with it then I upgraded to a SHP9500 and even though the highs are overbearing they sound 100% better than Grados. Grados only sound good at low volumes.
>>
>>55233292
Doing the tape mod makes Grados listenable at higher volume levels
