I have a sound issue using Arch :

The wierd thing is, GTK is using GIMP's filepicker, which already _had_ thumbnail preview (a while back), but it got also removed for whatever reason.
For GTK2 there was a patch wich never made it into upstream since people are working on GTK3 and GTK2 is in "only security fixes" mode.

I tried to set up a very slim distro today, the 25MB Trisquel Netinst and ratpoison. It still uses up well over 100MB of RAM with basically nothing running. How can I improve it? Thinking about reviving an old laptop that only has 512MB RAM.

Creating Windows recovery disks for my laptop right now, it's on the last disk. There's not a universal reason to do this, nor is there one not to. It depends what your system is, what you need from the system, what your users are etc.
For me its really no problem to remember to manually update stuff every now and then, and I would be annoyed if I had to stop it while doing something fairly cpu-intensive when my computer can become very laggy (poor, yes I am poor).
I am sure for some people, it would be conveneient. If you wanna do it, cool. But its not for everyone.

I have a script that converts any file to a flac file in the current folder
However it leaves the old filename extension (such as .mkv) in the new filename (filename.mkv.flac)

Arch seemed to be the base for doing things like GPU passthrough right?
I'm working on setting up a debian gateway for my homelab and iptables is kicking my ass. I've already set static address and and enabled ip forwarding and have successfully tested that but I'm having a hard time finding best practices with iptables that actually explain things rather than saying "run this".
Any one have any recommendations for best practices configuring iptables? I've configured ACLs on a few cli routers before so I'm not completely useless as far as security itself goes.

You can execute the GPU passthrough thing on any sufficiently up to date distro.

Let's start at the beginning.
How did you install? Did you download a full ISO or did you do a minimal net install?
If the latter, did you use an Ethernet (cable) to connect to the internet and do it?
I'm going to assume you have a Wi-Fi adaptor. (If you don't and it's just a desktop, then you just need an ethernet cable)
If the former, you will need to either
a) Use an ethernet cord to download the wifi firmware your computer needs (it should tell you during install, im sure there's a way to check post-install however, look it up). Aptitude install it
b) On another computer, use a USB drive to download the wifi firmware your computer needs (that it tells you) and install it from the USB stick in your Debian machine

If you have to ask, you're probably better off in testing. And I don't mean that in an offensive way, I mean it in a practical way. If you don't need bleeding edge, then there's no real reason to be on bleeding edge.
If something breaks and takes a long time to get the fix from unstable to pass to testing, just switch to unstable.
I run Testing on my Desktop and Unstable on my Laptop, because I like to mess around in my laptop more. From personal experience, both are great and have never broken on me. Responsible use of aptitude and apt-listbugs helps you be safe from bugs and broken updates.
Just use common sense when you check what aptitude is going to remove when upgrading, and if you don't like it (like it wanting to remove your whole DE because it's in the process of upgrading in the repos and it's not done yet), wait.
