What does /g/ think of the GNUnet? Is it safer than private trackers?

If it had all the music, shows, movies, games etc. that your private tracker had, which would you rather use?
>>
Private trackers:
>have to keep up a seed ratio or you're thrown out
>have to attach an account to your searches and requests
>have to trust that the private tracker's owner won't leak your details anywhere
>uploading must be approved

GNUnet:
>no seeding requirement
>no account needed
>no trusted 3rd parties needed
>no way to trace any traffic back to you, unless you set anonymity to 0
>even just searching for content can be done via GNUnet's anonymous protocol
>anyone can publish anything
>no way for publishers to know who's downloading
>no way for downloaders to know who's publishing (except via optional namespaces)

Seems like a clear winner to me.

If I knew how to compile for Windows, I'd see about compiling for some of the Windows folks on here. The only downloads I see on DDG for Windows are the outdated 0.8 version, which is not compatible.

>>51378131
At the moment, it's more just a working framework with hardly anything on it. I might publish some of the stuff I get from IPT onto it, just to populate it with some stuff.

The icons are by far the worst thing about the GUI
The filesharing tab works decently, as does

in any terminal, though there's not a whole lot on it at the moment, and it takes some time to find peers
As always you should read the manual first:

Do a search for keywords
There's a complete copy of the GPL currently available (the only thing I've managed to actually find from a peer which I don't control) and I'm also sharing Big Buck Bunny as a test (either "big," "buck" or "bunny" should work as keywords, and a few others)
It should take a minute or two to find, depending on how much traffic passes through your node

It might take a while to find the file, since it has to jump around a lot of peers until it hits a match, then has to hop along back to tell you about it
Not only that, but if you have an anonymity level of 1 (default) then your peer won't send the search until you have received and routed as much traffic as you plan on creating. This way, your peer doesn't look like the one originating the query, and it looks like you could be routing it for someone else

Not getting any peers. Do I need to forward any ports?
>>
What was in the file posted here yesterday. Wasn't able to get it.
>>
>>51379319
There are namespaces within GNUnet for verified stuff, but I haven't figured out quite how they work. The documentation seems a bit outdated, but basically iiuc namespaces contain files that have been published by a known peer, in case keyword searches get spammed with nonsense.
Since anyone can create namespaces and they are completely optional, this doesn't affect the distributed nature of GNUnet. You just need to trust the namespace to publish what the keywords suggest, which can be verified by other anons.

Of course I could be wrong about this, I've only just played with namespaces last night, so maybe asking #gnunet on Freenode might give better answers.

It's fucking shit. No, really. It's fucking shit. Try to install it, just fucking try it. Good luck installing and configuring it on a headless system, the only way to get the gnunet-setup utility is to install the graphical tool, and there's no fucking documentation on the config file besides
>hurr durr use ganoonet-setup and modify that file
Figuring out how to check to see if the fucker is working is a pain in the ass, and good luck using gnunet-download to get something, it just sits there without outputting fucking anything (even with verbose) if it can't find peers for the file. It will be at least 10 decades before it's even remotely usable if hurrd's development is anything to go by.

You could try only whitelisting peers that also blacklist peers from undesirable regions, but if there's one peer who doesn't, they could slip into your network.

Butter project is out there, and the popcorntime codebase should also be possible to dig up. Simply serving an eztvapi via gnunet and starting a proxy on localhost that points to it should do the trick. Don't know about phones though.

Yeah, but that will improve with the amount of users. You can just serve the magnet links via gnunet and have a gnunet tracker to reduce the load early on. Having a reddit and an IB would also provide an initial boost to the userbase. Afterward, it should be reasonable to start video sharing.

How do you add things to GNUnet, and can someone get caught hosting/seeding something over GNUnet (like is possible with BitTorrent)?
>>
>>51381076
Simple as gnunet-publish filename.mkv, except when there's errors such as in >>51381022

>>51381022
Try gnunet-arm -r before publishing again
>>
Just found a thesis about building a pseudonymous social messaging service on top of gnunet: https://gnunet.org/design-social-messaging-system

>>51381076
Considering everything is encrypted between peers, and no peer knows for sure if each other is the originator or not, it's only possible if you publish at 0 anonymity
>>
>>51381099
Interesting, I did that and it spit out a ton of these errors:

>Nov 16 09:49:20-818856 datastore-api-20261 WARNING Failed to receive response from database.

Is that normal?
>>
>>51381134

Anyone else try downloading this? It's taking me a long time, it's been at least 15 minutes, for an apparently 800kb file, and I'm only at 61 percent.
>>
>>51381150
Before or after trying publishing again?

Every time I start or restart gnunet-arm I get warningspam like that, and it doesn't seem to be hindering me at all, so I'd ignore it or only re/start it in a screen session for monitoring purposes

You don't, unless you can gleam from the URI something odd (i.e. the final part of a URI is the size, so something claiming to be a movie won't end in .520 for example)

It should be referred to as "lending to your neighbor" imho.

It's easy as shit once you have your node setup. You can just add a folder. But as others have said, there aren't enough users for it to be useful unless you, and probably whoever the traffic goes through, has really good upload.

I'm not haivng any luck downloading anything now. I got the Ghost in the Shell pic posted earlier, that took around 20 minutes to download, but now I'm trying to download an 8kb test.txt file, that won't get past zero, neither will your king of the hill file.

Isn't GNUnet too slow to be a real alternative for private trackers?
Last I checked it'd take like a week to download one movie.

I'm not finding SHIT, pls help. The user is in gnunet and gnunetdns group, gnunet was started as the user with gnunet-arm -s and then gnunet-arm -r was run as the user in another tab. To search, I use in yet another tab gnunet-search "term". I get no feedback.
>>
has anyone had success with the ubuntu gnunet package? I can't get things to work out
>>
>>51382929
After running gnunet-arm you can close the tabs they're in
For searching it doesn't provide feedback until it finds something, which can take a while depending on what you search for, what route it takes, etc.

>>
>>51382942
Same here, couldn't figure out what's wrong with it. For some reason I always got access not permitted errors for /var/lib/gnunet, even though the deamon was running as gnunet user and the user had all the rights for it. Then I tried to give myself rights for it and it still failed. I also restarted the service multiple times, but it didn't help.

Now I installed the latest version through the Guix packagemanger and that works out of the box.

If you don't see fs in there, then run:

Or use gnunet-setup and turn filesharing on as a default service, then run:
$ gnunet-arm -r
>>
>>51383134
fs is there, (un)fortunately.
