Ok /g/, so I've been lurking and reading up on this whole

Ok /g/, so I've been lurking and reading up on this whole amd/nvidia 1080 vs 480 thing going on at the moment, but looking at various benchmark tests there is something I still don't understand.

Surely the vast majority of people don't use resolutions beyond 1920X1080 (or 1920X1200 if you're using a proper monitor and not a glorified tv). All the benchmark tests I'm seeing for the 1080 are running ultra settings in 4k, but it seems that's only relevant to people with unnecessary 4k monitors.

Ultimately, if people are stupid/rich enough to go 4k so early when there is hardly any content, they will go for the 1080 to justify their purchase. For 99% of people though, the 480 will run everything for them perfectly at a fraction of the cost.

Nvidia can't survive like that, so it seems to me their entire business model revolves around having the fastest card, getting the rep, then duping gamers who don't know any better into buying a budget model. AMD are a more honest company?

Regardless, how do you think the newest budget nvidia card (at around the 480's price point) will compare to the 480?

Pic unrelated.

Shut the fuck up, benchmarks are not even out yet. Keep your panties on until some numbers actually get published.
>>

>AMD are a more honest company?

Yes but at the same time they do underhanded shit to their Chipsets.

Still not as kikey as Nvidia or Intel.

DX12 and Vulkan were a matter of Happenstance because of Mantle. They gave Nvidia the code and they weren't interested so now they're suffering because of that.

The AOTS benchmark everyone keeps talking about was actually running with a shader turned off on the 1080 so if that shader were actually running you might have seen better results from the DX12 multigpu setup of the two 480s.

I run a 390x and am very happy with it. Has enough Vram for me to go to 4k with medium shaders and high res textures. Planning on Crossfiring two 480s or 490s when they come out (AMD has a 2560 SP card up their sleeve that they didn't talk about at the conference).

So then buy the thing that suits you. Not all of us remain on 1080p monitors, those that do typically push higher frame targets like 120 or 144hz. If you're still only pushing for 1080p 60 then good for you, but don't generalize a whole market based on how poor you are.
>>
>>54901404
I think you underestimate the number of 1440p and 4k monitors out there. You don't have to be a richfag to own one of these. They are the current generation. Anyone who is an enthusiast PC gamer with a job will own these things.

It's akin to people who buy a console the first year it's out in terms of the popularity right now.

Who /2560*1600/ here?

>>54901404
Thats why they made a 1070 genius
>>
>not having a 4K monitor for productivity and getting a GTX1080 for maybe a game on the side
4K is the future, and your monitor lasts multiple years. Buuying a 1080 screen from now on is retarded
>>
1440p with adaptive refresh is the sweet spot for gaming at the moment.

4k is feasible, but doesn't really feel quite comfortable just yet.
>>
>>54901805
Buying a 4K monitor right now isn't that smart either.

Prices are too exorbitant for decent ones. 1440p is the sweet spot right now
>>
>>54901404
>but it seems that's only relevant to people with unnecessary 4k monitors.
if it runs >= 60 fps ultra settings on 4k, means it runs >= 60 fps ultra settings on 1080. That is quite relevant, means the card is future proof. You can also step it down and take a lower card like 1070 and the 1060 which will obviuously come out for guaranteed performance with those parameters.

>>54901976
I saved up for one, I can afford it, bt yeah, for most people 1440p is fine atm.
>>
>>54902012
I don'see the point of 4k unless you're getting a 40" monitor to make up for it or atleast 27".

All that DPI yo, unless you're doing alot of Photoshop and Adobe Premier.

I mostly upsample from 4k and do away with AA

I'm getting 1 big 40" and doing away with my double 1080p monitors

I'm so tired of hearing the "4K is early" or "hardly any content" statement. Are you retarded or just dense? It's been years you faggot, 4k is nearly everywhere and more importantly on the PC side it's never been more relevant (except 3440x1440 ultrawide is superior). Please an hero yourself, just because you are poor fag who cannot experience glorious 4k, doesn't mean we want to hear you constantly crying about it.
>>
>>54906067
> it's never been more relevant
It's never been less irrelevant, you meant to say. Still, only a small fraction of gamers (and only a tiny fraction of all pc users excluding professional graphic artists) use 4k screens.
>>
>>54906148
Exactly this
>>
>>54901404
I'm running 1440p @ 144Hz and want my games to run at 100FPS+
Fucking idiots.
>>
>>54901736
So 1070 will be same price as 480 with better performance?
>>
How stupid or good idea is it to buy an ultrawide monitor 34" with freesync plus the rx480? I mean the monitor costs like 3 times more but I wont do much gaymen anyways. Currently I have 7870. How big upgrade would it be? The last time I played something was 3 weeks ago, mostly I do programming, watch movies, a little bit of media editing and encoding. I gonna put most of my money into the cpu, should I wait for zen? Will there be a zen cpu for the 400 euro price class in october?
>>
>>54901634
Not true. I play tons of games and go for 1080 60hz because playing on the couch in front of a 55 inch tv is comfy.

People with 4k monitors already,

How different does it feel? I remember being blown away when we made it from 480p to 1080p, but I imagine there are diminishing returns when you move on to 4K?

What are your opinions? Like is it totally worth it?

For my next build currently I'm leaning towards 1440p & 144hz.

>>54909396
It's overrated. Too much dpi etc.
