Windows 10 installed and they tried to choose to go back to windows 7 during the installation, but it messed something up.
It can't boot windows, even safe mode. Repair options fail give some kind of registry error and restore says it can't find the drive.

I was getting BSOD when playing games on win 7 64bit. After some bsods here and there, the pc won't boot. I'm getting nonstop long beeps. The event manager was saying critical error kernel power 41.

The mobo's manual says continuous long beeps means gpu not properly inserted. But
I tried switching the GPU with a 6850, but the problem persisted. Also the 970's logo lights up when I turn the PC on. Already tried switching the memory sticks, still the same issue.

So my laptop is starting to get old and outdated and beat to shit, and I'm thinking about getting a new one bc I just got my tax return. Problem is, I'm dirt poor and the most I could do for a new laptop would be 300 bucks.
I used to have a nice little thinkpad, but that kicked the bucket about a year and a half, two years ago and since then I've been using a cheapo chromebook. I don't need the powerhouse of a computer my thinkpad was back when I was constantly doing technology oriented things, but it would be nice to at least have some ability to do that stuff again. Messing around with programs, some network testing, maybe some image editing, just standard tinkering. My chromebook isn't capable of that, but I don't know what else is out there.
Also, what would be a good OS to put on what I end up getting? I used to use arch but that's a pita sometimes, and I remember using backtrack/kali the last time I did any pentest stuff. What is the black, long PCIe slot on my motherboard for? It says it is a PCIe 3.0 x16 (max at x4 mode) slot. So I'm assuming that means it only has the bandwidth of an x4 slot (or is it more proper to say it has 4 lanes?), but uses an x16 physical connector for some reason? What's the purpose of doing that? I'm used to a smaller screen, my last two have been 10-12in.
I have lying around an old t500, but the battery is useless and the screen hinge is shattered, not to mention it's gigantic and heavy. My old lenovo is an x230 that physically is ok looking, but the battery again is kaput and the wireless card is nonfunctional to the point I can't even see it when I lspci or check wicd to see if it's visible there.
