Can someone explain to me why Ubuntu's out of the box font rendering is far superior to almost every other major distribution?
If the technology behind it is open source and readily available to other developers, why do the people behind Fedora, Manjaro, Debian, etc. ship absolute garbage in comparison?

Ubuntu uses a patched, proprietary version of freetype and I love it. It can be installed on almost every other distro I think.

So awhile back my roommate said I could have one of his old monitors since its backlight was miffed.
I couldn't figure out a simple way to fix it.
It's an ASUS VS248H, and sometimes the backlight works perfectly fine, and most of the time it does shit like this.
Is there a free or cheap way to fix this? I mostly just want to fix it to sell it (not a fan of how it looks honestly)

Backlight is obviously fucked. It's an edge-lit LED backlight, looks like it has four sections, three are opens.
Most likely: bad cable/connection attaching backlight to backlight controller.
Other possibilities: Shit you'll have no idea how to diagnose or fix.

MSI has shown us that the ever bulky and oversized gaming setups can be condensed like consoles have been since the very beginning.
Despite the price that you will see compared to custom built, if this type of product could become very popular while a custom built tower is relegated to a professional/super enthusiast setup, the economic ability of trashcan/pre-built might be attractive and benefit the consumer with an easy to jump in product plus portability. Mass production will be possible.
Now with the RX 480 and Zen coming soon compact pre-built have an opportunity...

Hey /g/uys, at night my computer which is off keeps on turning on for a breif second and closing down. Last night I was sitting at my desk and like clockwork at about 4:10 it flashed its screen on harddrive humming and then immediately shut down like ususal.
I didn't get the best look the screen but it seemed to just be a regular startup screen.
Whats the purpose of this?
Do you think that someone is taking data like a webcam pic, or something like recording its GPS Location. Sending audio files its recorded without my consent?

The basic benefits of shrinking dies is of course that you can manufacture higher complexity and more cores per square unit of space, at lower power and temperature ratings than would be possible with a larger die.
