I've been looking at SBCs that don't require proprietary blobs to boot and have noticed that it seems my choices are limited to either paying ~$50 for something with specs just barely better than the orignal Raspberry Pi B or paying $100+ for something with comparable specs to the higher end Orange Pi and Raspberry Pi 3. I've also noticed that the list of FSF approved SBCs seems to be rather out of date as there are newer ones that don't require blobs to boot that aren't listed. Are there any good options out there that are either cheaper than $50...

Beaglebone Black?
>>55291700
Those are about $55 now days and only have 512 MB of RAM and a single core ARM processor clocked at 1 GHz. I was really hoping I could either go cheaper than that for comparable specs or get something with better specs that wasn't significantly more expensive. I know they're making a new BeagleBone X15 with better specs but it's supposed to cost $200+ and the specs aren't significantly better than the current higher end sub $50 SBCs that require proprietary blobs.
Bump, found the BeagleBone Green that's just the Black without HDMI for $40.
Wouldn't it be better for AMD if they just focused on making GPUs or CPUs so they don't get rekt by having a war on two fronts? Focusing more time and money into one development would be much better than trying to do both. The only problem I can think of is monopolies, what do you think /g/
>>55291593
Why not focus on being the budget king of both ends instead of aiming for performance crown?
Most people buy i3/i5 tier hardware, if AMD could offer a quad core zen at i3 prices with 80% skylake ipc, they won.
>>55291621
>if AMD could offer a quad core zen at i3 prices with 80% skylake ipc, they won.
selling low volume for profit is better than selling high volume for loss. why do people seem to think AMD can just undercut Nvidia/Intel? obviously there's some merchants at work regarding Nvidia and Intel prices, but I'd say 90% of the price is legitimate, so at best, AMD could take a 10% hit, which is pretty much what they do to begin with
>>55291653
>why do people seem to think AMD can just undercut Nvidia/Intel
Because they done it in the past, what are you 15?
Literally GTX 970 level performance, and will cost more than the cheapest 970s right now
>>55291507
Reference 970s are still 340aud here, let's see how much this will cost. If they have the 8gb option for around 360aud, it'll still be more worth it.
the 970 is $250-$270 after rebate at the moment
the 480 will be $200 usd with a full 4gb of Ram and 8gb for $30 more, it will offer 970/390 tier performance, which is what AMD promised. They promised to make VR affordable and the aformentioned GPU's are currently the recommended GPU's for VR. I don't see a problem with this at all.
How does this make you feel, /g/?
I made a non-trivial effort to understand/care, but it just didn't happen.

Is the Android custom ROM community dying? Seems like a lot of the major ROMs are dead, with nothing really stepping in to fill their shoes except for a sea of mediocre Indian shit.

A clean wipe of any high end phone made in the last 3 years and a fresh battery will be good to go for another 3 years easily.
>>55291437
There's too many different cellphones. It's impossible to get a big enough community to collaborate on a proper operating system. The two smartphones I've owned in my life have only had unofficial ports of cyanogenmod and it turned my phone into garbage.
Maybe if they made a single OS with a repo of drivers instead of making a specific OS for each phone, it could work better.

My Nexus 5 was still performing great, only reason I sidegraded to this redmi 3 pro was because battery life.

Fuck the haters, I got it anyways
In this industry, definitely not. If I was interviewing someone for any kind of engineering or even sysadmin position and they put this on their resume, I wouldn't even interview them. It's fine if you're trying to get an entry level job, though.
What should I get instead? I need some certs to get entry level
Ok guys, I'm just as much nerd as the rest of you except for ONE thing - I've never used Linux. Literally ever.
I'm still running Windows 7, as I utterly despise Windows 8/10, and I refuse to upgrade. I know eventually Win7 will be unsupported so I have a few questions:
What version of Linux would suit a complete Linux noob like me?
I like to game. WoW, Battlefield, Rust, etc. How do I play these games on a Linux system? Is it even possible?

>>55291382
Noob standard issue is linux mint.
>>55291382
why don't you run a clean windows install to play game, and linux on a virtual box to the rest (maybe Debian)? i assume you have a decent PC
you don't really need updates if you're only gaming, except a really few ones
Hello, /g/
I come to you with an interesting problem. I have a Dell E6400 running Windows 10, which runs beautifully EXCEPT for an incredibly frustrating ongoing WiFi problem. I upgraded from Vista over the winter and ever since, regardless of the network I am connected to, my wireless connection is incredibly slow and will periodically cut out altogether. But what's even stranger is that once in a while, the connection speed will spike to full speed. NOTE: Wired connection is flawless. I have replaced the WiFi card and gone through every troubleshooting step that...

I'm trying to run Teaching Feeling under Wine, but every time I try I always get pic related. I love this game for reasons I do not want to explain and I don't want to always have to boot into Windows every time I want to run it.
I come to you in need, because I'm sure there may be a few of you who are stuck in the same situation. cheers

Is it true that US cell providers have shit that detects if you have a "smart" phone (that you got 3rd party or something) on their network and will force you into a data plan? One thing that has always been against me getting a smart phone is that they will force me onto a data plan which makes my bill go up even if it's an unlimited data provider. My bill right now is cheap as hell and I want it to stay that way. Even straight talk and metro pcs and stuff's unlimited data plans are more expensive than what I pay right now.
>>55291101
No thats not true. How could they even fucking charge you.
>>55291284
I keep seeing this as a story for people on AT&T esp where they used an unlocked phone and then AT&T automatically went and changed their plan when they saw that it was a smart phone.
