my brother is low on money and needs a laptop for video editing, would it be possible to upgrade this laptop later?

You will have to upgrade when it burns out in 3 months from now
No.

It's perfect for your brother.
is ubuntu still good?
or is ubuntu going towards the commercial side?
Mark Shuttlefuck wants the money he poured into it back.
Ubuntu is perfectly fine.
Unity is still a shit, but that's about it.
Gentoo?
So I've just made the switch to android. Is there anything I should do as far as protection. I've been apple scum since I've had a smartphone. Don't know if there's anything huge I'm missing.
Really, faggot? Nobody fucking cares, go to the cancerous smartphone general

Anybody here get LASIK or other laser eye surgery done?
Any risks? Any problem with using computer screens afterwards?
After years of being blind as fuck without glasses my doctor says I am still a likely candidate for LASIK (although I may not get 20/20 correction without glasses I would be much closer to it). I'm looking to start saving up for it now in hopes of having it in a year or so.
A friend of mine got it and had no adverse effects.
But I've heard it can go really wrong. Like not being able to drive at night time anymore n shit like that.
>>51525887
>I've heard it can go really wrong
All of the LASIK horror stories are from a really small minority of back-alley procedures from when LASIK was still really new
It's improved a *lot* over the last several years, to the point where you're more likely to get bitten by a shark while your airplane is crashing than have a fucked up lasik procedure.
I went in for a consultation once. To my dismay, I learned that my corneas were extremely shallow, to a point where there wasn't enough for the laser to burn away to correct my eyesight.
So, if I want to correct my eyesight permanently, I'm stuck with the option of lens implants, which, while perfectly serviceable as far as I know, cost twice as much, putting them beyond my reach.
Hey /g/, I'm new to Linux, NSA/Windows10 scared me. I tried installing Linux Mint on my desktop, but can't get a wired internet connection to come through. I also don't have a wireless card. The wired card is a "rtl8169/8110 family pci gigabit ethernet nic" and the motherboard has a standard wired connection as well. I've tried finding the correct drivers online but my desktop won't use them. How do I fix this?
Welcome to the Linux world.
Normally networking should work right away. Especially with a wired connection. So thats weird...
I had similar issue. I deleted my existing Ethernet connection from my network manager and then it made a new one automatically that worked. If that doesn't work I might be able to find the commands that fixed it another time.
In the future, an advanced AI with the computing power equivalent to thousands of human brains is released by a group of college kids with the purpose of replacing the government. It's free, open source, and available to be edited by anyone, anywhere. Changes are evaluated and approved by the consensus of the community, and it's highly encouraged that any changes made are clear, concise, and easy to navigate.
As the AI develops, it gives citizens the opportunity to vote on issues they would like input on, easily and simply, just like today's election system...

Implying the general public even knows whats best for them
>>51525741
If you have such a good AI, it can improve itself to perfection; nobody would need to write a bit of code. Also, at that point, you have no power over the AI, you can't even predict what it would do.
>>51526063
>If you have such a good AI, it can improve itself to perfection; nobody would need to write a bit of code
well you would have to make it in the first place right? or you are saying that it's so good it will create itself?

Considering buying pic related
17,3" , Intel Core i7 , 8 Go RAM , 1 To , GTX 850M
>>51525607
>1600 dollars at best buy
>probably 1000 dollars at Newegg
why wouldn't you build a gaming computer for the same price with better stuff? do you need it to be portable so everyone can see how much money you wasted on it?
>>51525607
It's a pretty good computer.
However it has dem huge ass bezels.
>thermal throttling
>loud as fuck
>needlessly heavy
>vastly overpriced compared to a desktop solution
>shitty battery life
If you need your gaymen on the go then get a shield tablet and a real desktop for less than the price of the laptop. Use Nvidia game stream and you're all set.
The old tried and true conclusion
>laptop
>gaming
Pick one.
I started a similar thread last night but I realized the question I was asking was wrong. Not which of these two monitors I should get (Acer Z35 or Asus 279Q) but rather what is more beneficial, 21:9 or 1440p?
>Acer Z35
21:9 only effective equates to an additional 640 pixels in width. From a productivity perspective does this make a big difference when in comes to getting things done? (i.e. research, Photoshop, editing, etc.)
Most media now a days is in 1920x1080 (16:9) therefore when watching movies, youtube or what have you there...

>>51525567
get the Asus 279Q
>>51525678
Although gaming is the primary reason I'm looking for a new monitor I want to know what the practical benefits are outside of gaming. I already have a 16:9 monitor and I'm wondering if there are any benefits to 21:9 (2560x1980) outside of gamin.
I'm fairly certain the 279Q will wreck the Z35 in a straight up gaming benefits comparison.
>>51525767
my previous post was just a joke
i switched from 16:9 to 21:9 a couple of months ago and there are benefits. the borders which you get from soaps or anime are ignorable aswell.
check out my thread about it

Is this literally dead, /g/?
people kept using mpeg4-part2 (divx/xvid) for some time after h.264 landed
once hardware support trickles down to the point where it's supported most everywhere, and encoding speed/efficiency gets to comfortable levels, it'll have a chance of taking over
this time around there's some decent competition in the free video codec space, which'll make things interesting
most standards take years to overtake the original.
Media companies have an obligation to cram more shit into the same form factor. Saves money and lets consumers have their ten eighty pee video. Not to mention sales of new hardware.
Would a GPU with H.264 decoding be just as good at playing H.265 or should I stick with H.264? It's for my moms laptop with a Celeron and Intel HD graphics that has problems with some video.
So let's say "pizza" is some object in JS.
