What can Linux do that Windows can't?
And before you say "freedom", that's only GNU/Linux, like Trisquel, which nobody on /g/ uses unironically.
Learning how to use the terminal really isn't learning how to do anything. You're just typing commands for programs to launch, that's it. Typing instead of clicking. Literally nothing of value.
Not much. Linux can be easily emulated on Windows while Wine is a piece of crap.
You can read source code of GNU/Linux
You can't read source code of Windows
You can modify how GNU/Linux works
You can modify only to some degree how Windows works
GNU/Linux is software that will always be developed, anyone has the possibility to take it and improve it.
If Microsoft somehow goes bankrupt, Windows will not be maintained - it depends on MSFT completely.

Wine is not an emulator, pleb.

The biggest mistake was made by your parents, not you.

Hey guys,
Do you know how to make uncertainty in Ruby?
I am making a exam project for school, in which we have to code a simple rocket engine controller.
2 tanks, one with oxygen and one with fuel and an ignition chamber where the two tanks are connected to.
The program is build around a sequencer, which counts from -10 (T-10) to 10 (T+10). At 0 (T-0) it opens the vents of the two tanks and lets in pressure to the ignition chamber - let's say 10 bars at T-0.
Then the program decreases the pressure of the ignition chamber by 10% every 1 second from...

There's a built-in rand() method that will help you. With no parameters, it just returns a float between 0 and 1.

Hello /g/ friends, long time no see.
I have a small problem with my new rig; and have some trouble finding the issue (normally, I'm the tech guy that people come to find when they have a problem, AH!), could you help me with that?
Here's the deal:
The computer freeze. At random. But mostly when I'm playing games.
Complete stop, no sound looping; no mouse, no keyboard; I can just hold on the power button to shut it off and restart it.
Here's my config:
- Seasonic X-850 80PLUS Gold (PSU)
- Amd FX-9590 (Cooled with a Dark Rock Pro 3 (Be quiet!))
- ASUS crosshair v formula z
- Corsair Vengeance (2x8GB; @2133Mhz)
- MSI GeForce 980GTX
- Sandisk SSD 480GB
- And a 2To HDD for data, can't recall the manufacturer at the moment.
All parts are new, and running on Win 10 family, 64bits.
Here's what I did:
- Checked the RAM with memtest86; found 1 error, replaced it; now the RAM is alright, but the issue is still there (Damnit!).
- Temps are stable. I get 50°C at most on the CPU.
Here's what I plan to do :
- Test the rig with my old graphic card (which never caused any freeze in my old rig)
- Redownload the Win 10 image and reinstall the system to be sure this is not a software issue (I highly doubt it, but you never know, right?)
Aaaand that's about it.
Maybe test with another HDD for installing the system, I've been told that the SSD could do that.
I do not have another PSU to test sadly.
Do you guys have any other ideas?
Many thanks!
What are idle temps? what program to monitor?
Does this happen if you do heavy CPU intensive programs (aside from gaming?).
>mostly when playing games
When else? specifically?
>>51646909
idle temps are about 40°C; checked within the BIOS mostly; I also run the ASUS program in background that warns me if anything's wrong (fan speed change; temps; etc)
No warning are ever made before the freeze.
It already happened while staying on the desktop, doing nothing; while I was getting a cup of coffee, only one or two times maybe.
While webbrowsing with Firefox.
With small games (Binding of Isaac)
Big games are often a garanteed freeze after 10 mins tho.

Windows 10 is your problem
Python 3 was a mistake
>>51646763
only reason python 2 is still around is because there are libraries that are python 2 only. once python 3 is fully compatible with python 2, support will be dropped completely and it will be a thing of the past like python 1.
>>51646763
>once python 3 is fully compatible with python 2
Never? They fucked it up, they should have made it at least library compatible.

I've been intending to make a thread about this for a while.
Considering a big part of this board studies or studied CS or related topics, I was wondering if you participate in competitive programming, whether it be by taking part in TopCoder SRM, Codeforces contests or even the ACM-ICPC.
We could share resources, must-solve problems, interesting (hard) problems, language-specific tip and tricks, or whatever comes to your mind!

>>51646808
it's a lot of fun and you learn a lot =)
>>51646808
also, if you're into it, it helps you get into companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc.
Their interviews are piss easy compared to what you do in contests and participants can usually show the interviewers tons of different ways to solve the problem
What chair does /g/ use? I'm in the market for a new one, any price really

steelcase leap. please do not buy garbage gaming meme chairs lmao.
Some cheap shit my wife got at a yard sale, good cushioning which is all that matters to me. Dogs have scratched up all the leather on it but still feels good.

What did you fucking expect in a computing major? Don't you know about game development degrees?

i cheated on my CCNP this week and passed
>>51646568
How hard is CCNA1 /10?
I'm stressed AF even though i've basically been studying heavily
>>51646585
It depends on how much knowledge you have.
If you had zero knowledge before you started studying I would rate it 6/10 for hardness.
It entirely depends on the person but just remember that even if you fail, being Cisco certified isn't the only way to go.
nVidia and AMD make their properietary GPU drivers and never open the sources. so there is still no open source free driver that can run GPGPU program.
why they don't open their driver sources? they give their properietary driver binaries without charge. that is, they don't make money from them. I think whether they open their driver sources or not, their sales wouldn't be that changed.
Because video drivers from either have 20+ year old hacks and nobody from any company wants anyone to see them.
Also third party IP
Good point OP, maybe their graphic cards could do more, but are constrained on purpose, so the more expensive, newest cards sell instead.

Should we as human biengs, allow androids to walk freely as people, or as slaves?
We created them, we gave them the ability to feel, experiance and wonder at the world, so I think it's only fair that we give them rights as well. As long as we can still excercise some control over them , so that they dont go apeshit.
Stop thinking with your dick.
>>51646528
>>51646557
They're literally objects. Should we give vacuum cleaners and smartphones rights, too?
Nuclear energy is one of the safest forms of energy production based on deaths / KW, but the waste produced by it is highly radioactive for nearly 300,000 years if left untreated.
Is efficient and safely produced energy worth the price of highly radioactive waste? Should we halt the allowance of more waste to be produced until better waste management options are available?
For anyone interested, these are the three most viable known options for dealing with the waste:
1. Direct disposal (after storage) to a geological repository. The material has very long-lived...

It really doesn't matter how good nuclear power is. It could do a little jig and solve all the world's problems overnight and no-one would build nuclear power plants.
The fact is that people hate nuclear power too much.
As a general rule with people; anything where emotional propaganda is more effective than reasoned logic means the emotional propaganda will win.
Why dont government send the Earth's waste to Sun or Mars instead?

Hey /g/ents, need a new music player for my phone.

What's a good music player with a decent interface and an equalizer? I'd buy Poweramp but want to test other alternatives and don't know if it's a good idea buying it from their site if I wipe my phone every now and then. Currently using vlc, the quality is terrible and actually adds static to .flac files.
What do you...

I use rocketplayer, I'm pretty sure you've tried it and it's the only one I have used but very simple and least of the shitty ones I've used on android.
Give it a shot if you haven't.
