Hi guys, my friend is looking to get a new gaming pc under 700$ and he asked for my help. I got a g3258(at 4.2) with r9 280 last xmas and I only have good things to say about it all new games flawless on ultra. So naturally we built it around g3258 because its still dirt cheap compared to i3/5s. My question is if you guys think r9 290x is too much for this cpu, are there any cpu+gpu combos that are better for gaming in the same price range (around $400 for those two)

OC g3258 + 280x or 960 is the sweet spot.

It was an ok cpu who's value was new to Intel users. The 860k would be the God tier cpu for that price range but I would prefer to have an upgrade to an I5 or I7 devils canyon then a 6300/8350.

I never had to use a laptop on campus. I carried a tablet to pass time between classes and use my desktop at home.

Yes, the specs. It wasn't good when it was released, and now it's just completely useless.
The screen is too small to be of any use without a proper hardware keyboard too.
It was a decent idea that was executed terribly, and because it was executed terribly it never took off.

honestly, I prefer my 21:9 screen in general, both for watching movies, working and gaming. However, some games don’t scale correctly their menus, and this is just shit playing them with shitty scaled menus. Also, videos on the internet are generally 16:9, and it’s a bit disturbing having two black bands on the sides of your screen, that’s why I use my 16:9 screen for them (yes, I have both).

I noticed that one of the 21:9 monitors had split screen where you could play games in 16:9 and have a bit off to the side, which seemed a bit gimmicky but might be useful for games that don't scale to 21:9
