I agree OP, I only pay Apple exactly what the price tag says, and not more.

Hello, /g/. and merry christmas. i have a question for athe programmers. i want to create program (or hire somebody to) that will continiously download the content from two sites and store them. i need them to keep updated for i fear losing these sites in the years im gonna be away soon .
so to make a long story short how would i go about this?
Use the general
Mostly solid advice. Here's another one

This is the first really good looking (and working) hologram technology. Smartwatches with huge holographic displays by 2020?

the current one, why would you want an old laptop?
and get the best model you can afford.
Now that Seagate isn't entirely garbage, why are we not exclusively buying HITACHI and HGST drives?
>>52059691
that's an interesting chart. backblaze's usage is typically a lot different from consumer usage though right? i think they just write data to the drive and then let it sit idle until their backups need to be rebuilt.
From personal experience, seagate, and particularly WD drives have been very quiet, which is appealing for me. Also, i have a nas backup so im not too concerned about failures.
Daily reminder that the new WD Blues are rebranded Greens (5400RPM). No more will the perform neck-and-neck with the Blacks, like the EZEX did.

ITT: we post solutions to tech problems that should not have worked
i'll start
>wifi really slow (3-4 mbs), using a usb dongle
>mess around with .conf files and such, nothing works
>try a different dongle, nothing
>on a whim, put dongle about 3 feet away from computer using a usb extension cord
>speed is immediately 15-20 mbs
Not that odd of a fix but I wanted to post.
>buy EVGA meme-psu
>psu starts werrrrrrring as I first boot
>slap psu
>werrrrrrrrrring stops, becomes silent

>Microsoft wont stop trying to nag me to update to windows

> have to manually install windows updates so windows 10 won't download without my premission and waste my bandwidth., forget to manually install updates, leaving me the chance of getting a virus from 0-day exploit.

> cant use free anti virus without it taking resources or spying on me like windows 10, or popuping me to death.
> cant use firefox, firefox dosen't care. takes to much ram. freezes on websites. much slower then chrome, mozilla won't fix it. sucks have to use chrome faster, low addon support/possible bottsnet

Sounds like you make uninformed choices and lack any technical skill. You should probably just buy a iToy because it's made for people like you.
So, /g/ my sister got me this for Christmas, because "hey anon, you're into computers, right?" and I've thought up a use for it.
I want totally portable Linux.
Basically, since this fucker fits in my pocket, I want to see if this is possible. I just wanna plug it into some random computer and have it work, any tips for doing that? I'm tempted to go Arch Linux, but I'm not sure if that's what I want or if that's the exact opposite.
Also, because this would be pretty easy to steal, I'd like to protect it as best I can, is there anything I can do beyond full disk encryption?
And fuck... I might as well ask, is the thing actually even any good? I know you can get some pretty shit hard drives, and I'm not too familiar with the brands.
>>52059490
booting from USB is pretty easy as long as you can get to the boot order in the bios.
>>52059490
Post your sister
Best is to have 2 partitions. NTFS first, linux/extX whatever second. Windows gives up if the first partition isn't recognized so this way you get a portable hard drive with a linux bootable on it.
>saw arch linux meme
no go with ubuntu and go through its installation, partition the drive as above then it will pretend it is a regular hard drive. make sure you set the boot flag correctly if it doesn't.
seagate and WD are fine just remember if the drive fails it may have only been the bay and interface board and not the drive. Unless it is one of those with the permanently soldered ones in which case you are fucked.
> Steam is unethical because of DRM and not being free as in freedom -> have getting any players on your indie game
Just curious is there such a thing as a successful free as in freedom game? A lot of what Richard Stallman advocates sounds like it would make computing extremely difficult, especially for a gamedev.
>>52059128
>Just curious is there such a thing as a successful free as in freedom game?
yes, but they are usually small indie titles or tech demos

Quick question, when looking at HWMonitor, I have a different temp for "CPU" and for "FX-8350." What's the difference? Which should I monitor when watching my cpu temp?

as far as i know, AMD CPUs don't have real temperature sensors anymore. the bottom one is some computed value that has basically nothing to do with reality. the top one is a sensor on the motherboard, near the CPU. in the socket i think.
I'm sick of getting the notification and I'm curious at this point if it's any better from when it first came out (Less glitches, any faster?) And what pros and cons there are compared to 7.
Should I do it?
>>52058874
With Win10, Microsoft will LITERALLY have unrestricted access to ALL of your files. They will also collect all of your usage statistics.
Only the absolute dumb of the dumbest install Windows 10 on their computers.
I am not even exaggerating.
>>52059229
>I am not even exaggerating.
except you are, and have literally 0 proof MS has "unrestricted access to ALL of your files"
>>52059243
I'm not that anon but Windows 10 deleted a patch to crack some software that I use. Without a notice the .exe is no longer there, nice tactic to make paid software develop for windows.
Two things I want to ask:
I picked up a wireless card + pcie x1 adapater for it but it does nothing and makes my video card error out (flicking fans) when it's set on the board
Is it fucked /g/? Can my board not take it? I have an ASUS H87-M+
Also trying to find decent software to monitor network usage/implement data caps
>>52058836
you have any other devices to use the adapter with? I'd bet the adapter is shit or became shit over time.
Mini PCIE slots also have USB ports. If your card is internally an USB one, the adapter won't work with it.
>>52058864
Nah. My old motherboard got rekt so I can't test anything.
Haven't yet tried switching the screws on the adapter. There were two long screws that came with it for mounting the full-to-half bracket, then two short screws that came with the card. The long screws didn't sit completely in the adapter, and then made the bracket rise a bit above the adapter when screwed to the card. I would've thought the plate would need to contact the screw holes for it to ground right, but all it does is make it sit awkward.
250 gig SSD and 16 gig ram
or 8 gig ram and 500 gig SSD?
which would you pick?
