Why isn't there a single linux DE that works well with higher DPI displays?
Gnome 3 comes closest and literally it supports is 200% scaling and nothing else.
On OS X I can emulate the look of various resolutions (1920x1080, 2560x1440, 3072x1728, 3840x2160, etc.) and the UI will scale to higher resolution assets so the visual quality is identical, but the content is larger. Windows has scaling in 25% increments that works similarly.
Linux isn't meant to be used on the desktop.

Hey, /g/, will this i5 2500k still be good to go for a 4Ghz clock despite the seemingly massive amount of scratchs on the heat spreader? Or will this actually ruin heat transfer and make overclockin pretty much impossible if I want reasonable temps?
>>52392797
Minor surface imperfections are what thermal paste was made for. You won't notice any difference because of the scratches.
>>52392797
it is fine, if you're worried about it that much you'd be lapping it anyways. just put artic silver 5 on and be done with it. I swear to god you people on here these days are fucking retarded babies

once you get past the issues of packages not being touched (for better or worse) and rpmfusion being a pain in the arse when it stops maintaining packages, it's actually one of the better bleeding edge distros out there

I'm flip flopping between mechanical engineering and computer science as my university major and I've recently started leaning towards computer science. Does anyone have any experience studying or working in this field?
>>52392680
Of course they're good but you'll have a bunch of autistic NEETs on here telling you otherwise because after all, this is /g/.
>>52392680
>experience?
sure.
waddya wanna know kid?
>>52392680
I'm currently studying CS. There are a lot of internship opportunities in the states and if you really push yourself to work on side projects along with doing decently in school it is pretty easy to score interviews.
Once you land an internship or two it will be smooth sailing from there in terms of your career. You usually get a return offer and even if you don't play to go back for full time, the work experience is really good for getting more interviews.

Why do I have the option to recover an email address with my phone number?
Can't any personal get my phone, then get access to my email and all its accounts?
Surely the best method would be that if you forget the password to your email account the only way to recover it would be to memorise the recovery code they give you at the beginning?
Sure, if the person knows you personally, and is looking to steal your information specifically, then getting your phone would be easier.
But that's rarely the case. Russian hackers aren't going to be able to steal your phone, but they can steal your password or any recovery settings you have.
>>52392616
So how are we ever going to get past this issue of security?
Good passwords don't mean anything if people can get access to your recovery methods (phone number, secondary emails)
>>52392668
You realize they can't just know your phone number, right? When you use phone authentication, they send a text to your phone with a password for recovery.
Two factor authentication like the above is actually a pretty good step. A hacker might be able to steal your phone, or they might be able to get your password. But the odds of them getting both are astronomical (assuming you're careful and don't do something retarded, like storing your pass on your phone).
So of course, there's...
