Winter bike: CCM Elite mountain bike. It's a piece of shit I clean once a year and I hope to get one more winter out of it before giving it away for scrap metal.

Poor weather/errand bike: 12-year old DeVinci Stockholm, a 'touring hybrid', nice commuter bike. Weighs about 22 lbs, replaced rims on it last summer to go to 27mm centre-line tires, great for keeping up more or less with downtown traffic on shitty urban pavement. Back rack, panniers. No toe clips.

Nice weather bike: refurbished 1991 or so Marinoni. Beautifully smooth old racing bike. Cost me $60 because my brother-in-law bike mechanic is a goddam genius. Bear-trap toe clips.

Workout bike: 2008 Devinci LeMans 3. Carbon front and back forks. It's a barely passable road bike by today's standards, but still beautifully solid at 70 km/h and I like it. Clicky pedals I've got used to.

Weight saving, rear brakes only produce 30% of your stopping power so they lock up easier, you don't need extra power from a large rotor at the rear.

It is personal preference though.

Want a bike for occasional rides to the gym and riding asphalt trails in the state park. I'd like to use it for some commuting when I can. I can't spend too much.

Is my best bet craigslist, or something new?

Nice! Is that a good bike for riding on hilly streets?

I need something like this. I want to ride to one of my jobs. That's 20min away, but the hills are shit tier. It's like 4 miles of hills incline, varying inclines. Luckily on the way back it's only 1-2 miles of inclines. It would be awesome to get back into riding. I'm only using my trainer in the basement.

Honestly any bike would work fine.
It's all about the gear range that you have. this bike is designed to have a lot of mounting holes for gear like in pic related. The drive train in the front has 3 different rings & in the back a wide amount of different speeds.

>>
>>37142390
you only need mounting holes to carry bags. Everything else that's small can just be mounted on the handlebars. Although If you put a lot of stuff on you would want to get some wider ones eventually.

With my bike I can carry so many groceries & things.

You could also get a more of a road bike feel with a rear rack, like pic related

Why would you still buy a mountain bike?
>>
>>37150841
Mountain bikes seem like the default purchase with road bikes and with some people even hybrids being seen as for serious cyclists.

One you spend a bit of time on a decent road bike going back to slow old mountain bikes seems unbearable
>>
>>37150841
My guess would be, most people buy a mountain bike as teenagers, because that's when you'll ride through the forest and build ramps in your backyard.
And many people don't upgrade their bike until much later when they either become more serious about biking or start working and finally have money for a decent bike.

I personally am >>37136331.
That's a hybrid I bought last year. I went with that because of the area I live and ride in. Around 50% of what I ride on is decent roads (which is where the slimmer tires - compared to a mountain bike - and suspension lock give me an advantage), the other half is shitty asphalt roads or dirt/gravel roads, where a suspension and bigger tires - compared to a road bike - are practical.
In addition to that, I never go totally off-road, so a full suspension mountain bike isn't really worth it either.

I only have time to do an hour or two most days I go out. I'm also around DC and we've had shitty weather all spring plus I don't like playing chicken with all of the immigrants on the roads. I probably do ~75 miles a week and there is only one big hill rest is totally flat.

I've gone out with my school's cycling team a few times and most of the kids have pencil legs bc they don't lift but they can fly. Cycling definitely is worth it tho cardio + mild leg work

craigslist mang. I got baby for 175 nearly new, previous owner bought it new and only rode it like twice when they decided exercise was too hard, so they put it in the garage for a year then sold it to me. Goes about 1700 new. 1/10 the price.

>helmet

They're bullshit. The most common neck/head injury is rotational which helmets don't do shit for. Head injuries account for less than 6% of all cycling injuries. I've actually gone body over handlebars before onto cement...only injury was a skinned knee and scuffed shoe.

I live in the Netherlands were using your bike for small distance transport is pretty common.

I ride my bike to the trainstation to go to college veryday and to work and to the gym.

So on average I bike about 20km or 12 miles a day. It is great way to keep in shape, maintain basic cardio and I live rural so it is pretty comfy with the proper music.

Pic quite related

>>37162108

Question. What's with you clog-wearers and these giant steel hunks of heaviness? My baby weighs about 15 lbs and is perfect...but a bike like your pic can be about 40 lbs. For what purpose?
>>
The frames are steel and the rims are steel. Everything is fucking steel. These bikes are very heavy but also insanely durable and thats the catch, people ride on 50+ year old bikes here that have barely seen any maintenance and still run great
>>
>>37162144
Well a couple of different reasons

A we use our bikes more intensively so we need a good bike

B most bikes are as heavy as mine. The bikes in this tread are also very common in the Netherlands. This is the first time I had this type of bike

C Hipster stuf has become more populair the recent years thats why this heavy duty bike got more populair since it is old school.
Back in the day these bikes were used for small transport and the ballsackbreaking bar was later placed as reinforcement so that the bike would break due to the heavy load. The female type byke was actually the standard byke. Back in the day people would have small baskets in front of their bikes for transport. With the hipster stuff getting populair this became populair aswell. Especially among housewifes and student to put their bags in.

Nice. Just finished a short bike trek through the Netherlands (where I live). 4 days 687km on a trekking bike (VSF Fahrradmanufaktur).

Pic is my bike. Trek Madone 6.9 SSL.
>>
For cardio, would a heavy steel mtn bike be better than a skinny tire, lightweight roadie? I don't have the time and space to be traveling miles and miles. A nice 5 mile ride would be all I'd do. So would a mtn bike be better since it's less efficient?
>>
>>37164153
5 miles will never be efficient. The nice thing about cycling is that you can go 80miles+ and explore whatever you want. Cycling is so fucking efficient that you can go massive distances, and that is also what should be driving you to do it. Just have fun!
>>
>>37164311
>>37164153

Well, 80+ miles is nowhere near normal people would do. 5 miles is pretty short though, why only 5 miles? Is time the issue or is your cardio like shit? You say time, but if you do like 5 miles in 15 minutes, showering and changing clothes would almost take longer.
5 miles to the top of some mountain can still be a pain in the ass. If you just want to get your 30minutes of 'working out' a day, that will do.
And I really do think of cycling as a healthy way of being outside as well. Get some sun, fresh air and work your body.
If it really only is 5 miles you'd be doing, dont bother buying anything fancy. Just buy the cheapest bike (with some gears) nearby. Make sure it fits.

Good luck!
