How have you improved yourself this week/month/year? Lifting isn't life, a well-balanced human being is productive, has hobbies, pushes him/herself to succeed, is charismatic, and strives to live the best life they can. Share your successes, failures, methods, and everything in between.

The sticky is divided like so:
>Recommended Readings.
>Some tips to get your life back on track.
>Study and Career.
>To-do list habit.rpg (If you’re TOTALLY Lost. Start with this one)
>Focus and meditation
>Finance

Basic Recommendations:
>Have a productivity Framework that is flexible. A mindset that gets you going.
>Use a calendar, like google calendar. Hours and shit for things YOU WILL DO.
>Learn to focus.
>Meditate.
>Do routines for things you should do periodically/daily, this should cover daily things or weekly chores such as laundry, cleaning, shopping.
>Identify and Eliminate conflicts within yourself.
>Focus on identifying the time wasters in your life and eliminate them.
>Focus on the essentials. If you try to do everything at once you’ll burnout. Little by little.

Material reading can be tricky. There will be trash here and there as we're not /lit/.

But we have to trust others.
Image related has a detailed list that an Annon provided on a thread a while back. If you got time to kill, click on the image, and read the descriptions

As time goes, the /SIG/ has had a couple of books recommended. I’ve done my best to try to get talks of the authors of such books so you can get a ‘piece’ before you commit.

Google a bit about the book, if you think you can get something out of it, watch the talk.
In my opinion, try getting the books “for free”.
If you read it and get something out of it, consider paying for the book.

>Freedom is having control of your life

You should at least have 3 hobbies/activities.
-One that will pay the bills, gets food on your table
-One that will keep you in shape. (lower you faggot)
-One that you're passionate about and might be able to develop into a career.
--------

If you're into lifting, taking the tips to better yourself should be simple; as you already have built some self-discipline.

Make peace with yourself and the way things are right now.
Stop thinking the world owes you, how destiny ‘fucked you over’, how those guys have it easier.
Accept things as they are, realize that life is cruel and your circumstances are the ones you were given. You can’t do shit about the starting point, but you can move forward.

Don’t focus in what was given to you, focus in what you’ll achieve.

Eliminate the things you dislike about yourself, about your life. Is as simple as, do you enjoy your job? No? Take steps to change the feeling.
How are you gonna make that? You either make your job more enjoyable, or you change jobs. Simple.
You want a girl? how do you plan to achieve that? Are you too socially inept? Work on that.
Are you piss poor and can’t afford a decent living? Work on that too.

No matter who you are, where you are in your life, or how fucked up you think you are.
You can improve your life. Take control. Move forward.
Dreams keeps us alive, fighting for them makes us feel alive.
About 5-7 years ago, I was a fucking train-wreck.
Right now, I'm doing fairly well.

Get some discipline, set some goals and a way to achieve them.
Cultivate yourself, learn stuff, get your shit together.

And realize, understand. None is coming to save you.
You got to make your way through.
You NEED to take CONTROL.

If you're still in School. For fuck sake pay attention.

MORE than half of actually doing good in school is attending, the other half is paying attention in class. So then do it.
Or stop it altogether.
If you’re in college and you’re not feeling it, take a semester to think things through.
If you’re in high school, don’t think YOU NEED to enter college to be successful. There are other ways…
Google just started hiring people who never went to college.
WATCH this talk:

Some learning resources, focusing in code since I’m an ‘IT’ guy:
>duolingo.com
First and foremost. Free language learning tool with a really robust app. THIS IS A MUST. Learning a new language will help you out no matter who you are.
>codeacademy.com
Teaches you the basics, from the ground up.
>codeschool.com/
Similar to codeacademy.
>youtube.com/user/thenewboston
Personal favorite. This guy step by step, learns a shit-ton of programing languages. Give this a check and start watching something you’re interested in.
>codeeval.com
This one I really like, once you get your shit going, it puts you ‘objectives’ to solve through code, last batch are really complex.
>coursera.org
It’s a really nice online-course platform. There are really good things here as well.
>openprocessing.org / processing.org / codepen.io
These sites display some really cool stuff, where you can also check the source code and modify it to see what happens.

As for career options.
Choose anything you want, If you want to go into Philosophy or Social studies, That's fucking great. As long as you’re passionate about it, you’ll find a way.
You can always become a teacher or a writer.

BUT BE FUCKING AWARE THAT YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME MAKING MONEY. Don't get a loan to study shit that will be expensive to repay.

Other than that, don't enter into something soulless just because 'I'll get money'.
You only got one fucking life, don’t waste it doing something you hate.

You must have a to-do list, it's pretty essential.
As for which, there are several options
Google Keep, Evernote or whatever suits you.

But currently I suggest you use:
https://habitrpg.com/
There’s even a /fit/ guild created to keep us in check.
https://habitrpg.com/#/options/groups/guilds/eeb30614-2936-4f1c-9713-117248d10149

It’s certainly geeky as fuck. But Gamification has been proven to work when applied to certain aspects of human psyche. Helps you stay in check and keeping your eyes on the trophy.

Stupid trivial things I used to do, I stopped once I placed them as ‘Bad habits’.
It also has a mobile app, while it’s a bit limited and on construction, it is free.

There are three main categories.
>Habits. These are things you do by impulse, not under a schedule. Can be good or bad.

+Go for a jog
+Sleep early/on time Sun-Thu
+Walk the dog
+Go for a ride
+Cook something new
+Go out and socialize
+Spend time at the shelter

-Smoke
-Drink soda
-Drink beers
-Eat Junk/Dirty bulk
-Stay up late Sun-Thu
-Fap [?]
-Play 1.5+ Hours vidya a day
-Shitpost

>Dailies are things you ALWAYS do. Every day or certain days of the week. Planned, they are only good.

+Lift (m - w - f)
+Eat your macros(daily)
+Buy Groceries (Sa)
+Read 30 min (daily)
+Practice the Guitar 30 Min(daily)
+Study Video Editing 40 Min (daily)
+Cook (We, Sa)
+Do your daily points in duolingo

>To-Do are, well, things you must do. You can have a checklist within one To-Do.

()Fix the shelf
()Go to the post office and send the package
()Buy the ticket to the concert
()Pay the landlord
()Organize my trip to the moon
—()Get the rocket tickets
—()Get the reservation for the moon Hostel
—()Buy some moonars to have some local money
—()Buy a map of moon city

Seeing the numbers go up (or health go down) is a weird sort of motivation. I can vouch for it. Give it a try, if you have no idea where to start, This is a good one.

Fill your bad habits, put the to-do’s and take it from there.

Meditation and focus is taking a Long fucking while. While I do meditate, It's not my strongpoint, so It doesn't come as easy.
Boils down to, meditation is really advisable in today's world of instant gratification.
It's important to listen to your own voice from time to time.
Mediation will help you focus on the long run, as you gain control of yourself.

Some (non-curated)resources I've been mentioned on the way:

As for Finance. That's also under construction.
But managing your own money is fucking important.
I'm just scratching the surface on it. I advice you check this:

PERSONAL FINANCE

To get started, you obviously need to get an income sorted, now, there are 2 main ways to make money, work for somebody else, or earn money yourself.

Working for somebody else is self explanatory, you go out and get a job, busting your balls, normally for peanuts if you don't have a great career, and doing that day after day, year after year. Is this always a bad thing? No, most people start here in fact, it tends to be a good, at least consistent way to make money. People do it there whole lives, and that's up to them.

BUT SHIT FINANCEBRAH, I DON'T WANT TO BE BUSTING MY BALLS TO MAKE SOMEONE ELSE A LOAD OF MONEY, I hear you say.

Earning money for yourself.

Again, there are two ways to do this. Firstly, is ACTIVELY earning it, creating a business, that you work at and it provides you with profit, and PASSIVELY earning it, meaning you put money you already have to work.

I can't possible cover off every single way to actively make money in 1 post, but if it interests you, look into it. You can start an online business while you already have a job, if you still want the security. You can start a side gig on the weekends, you can import and sell at markets or online. You can jack it all in, and start a physical business (please don't do that without serious thought) Actively earning money is one of the most rewarding things you can do, IMHO

>Earning online
http://www.lifehack.org/articles/money/24-easy-ways-make-money-the-internet.html

>Low start up cost businesses/part time
http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/201588
http://www.thesimpledollar.com/50-side-businesses-you-can-start-on-your-own/

There are hundreds of articles out there, have a look, see what you think, and do your research.
>>
BUT SHIT FINANCEBRAH, NOW I'M EARNING ALL THIS MONEY, WHAT DO I DO WITH IT, SHOULD I BUY A FERRARI?

You save it, live within your means, don't go into high interest debt, keep expenses low, the more you save, the more you can put to work, and the more you can earn.

Passively earning money.

I like to call this putting your money to work for you, it's takes money you have saved, investing it, and getting a return on it.

I CAN MAKE MONEY WITHOUT WORKING FINANCEBRAH? ARE YOU FOR REAL.

Yes. This is how most people become wealthy, saving money, and getting a big return on it. How do you do that? Again, there are hundreds of ways. As a general rule, the higher the risk, the higher the reward. What you invest in depends on your investment strategy.

http://www.wikihow.com/Create-an-Investment-Plan

Read it and create one, it should tie in to your long term goals that you set and have written down.

Again, too many different kind of investments to cover in one post, here is a good overview of them.

http://www.investopedia.com/university/20_investments/

This is the risk order:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk%E2%80%93return_spectrum

I personally prefer Real estate, forex trading, and stocks. There is so much information out there, I can just encourage you to read and learn as much as possible. See what suits your life and where you live. And never stop learning.

FINANCEBRAHS RULES ON HOW TO BE FINANCIALLY SMART

>PAYING OFF HIGH INTEREST DEBT IS THE BEST FORM OF SAVING THERE IS, payday loans first, credit cards, ect.
>NEVER GO INTO DEBT TO BUY THINGS THAT DEPRECIATE, IF YOU CAN MANAGE IT
>LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS. THE BRAND NAME BAKED BEANS COME AFTER ALL THE HARD WORK
>AVOID ALL LATE PENALITIES ON DEBT
>BUDGET WISELY

and finally, the most important one.

TRY AND SAVE SOMETHING EVERY PAY PERIOD. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF ITS $1, SET A GOAL OF HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO SAVE AND FUCKING HIT IT, PUT IT INTO AN ACCOUNT TO BE USED ONLY FOR INVESTING.

That's why It spawns a lot of topics, because they are topics for someone who has no fucking clue on how to give the first step.
Not for everyone, but it will reach someone, and that will be enough.

On that... FinanceBrah, I want to start saving moneyz.

Gonna post a couple of TL;DRs of stiff I've posted on /fit/ before that has had a good response

>you should compare yourself to others, not to make yourself feel good but to see what you like about them and what you don't. Use what you learn and apply it to yourself
>following that, 'If you're the best person in the room, you're in the wrong room.'
>you probably have people in your life you don't want or need. Get rid of them, they're usually a drain on resources and emotions
>one thing at a time. Don't overload yourself with self improvement; like the gym, you'll burn out and demoralize yourself
>try, try, try again. Fuck up as much as you need, unless you're hitting the same point, then reevaluate your approach to whatever it is
>be selfish. Be the star of the movie that is your life. If it makes you feel good (short and long term), do it.
>you do you. If vidya is your thing, play fucking vidya. If you dont like fashion, dress basic. If you don't care, don't pretend to
>don't be a victim, ever. If you let out happen, change. If it was unavoidable, you learn from it, take steps to avoid it again, or accept the damage without blaming others
>how would you live if you had someone knock on your door every morning and tell you how many days you had left to live?

I'll lurk this thread for a while, if anyone wants me to elaborate on any of these, ask. I've realized half of these on my own (with heavy guidance from 4chan strangely enough), and half of them by watching people around me
>>
What do you guys think of Danger and Play?
>>
How do you guys deal with wanting to improve at too many things. I've got so much stuff I'm working on sometimes it feels like I don't make progress on anything. Also it makes me feel guilty anytime I'm not doing something productive to the point I don't want to sit down and watch a movie ever.

Right now I'm trying to do all of the following:

Crush work - So that's about 8-10 hours a day but has recently paid of with a promotion and hitting 6 figures
Improve programming and data science knowledge base - Career related but not within the normal 8-10 hours I spend doing actual work
Fitness - Strength and cardio of course
Learn piano - Need a minimum of 30 minutes a day I would say to see real progress
Learn Spanish - Same as piano takes consistent everyday work
Become more handy - Just bought a house so I'm reading and taking on projects
Laying ground work of a side business - Have a few ideas would really like to try and run with one but finding the time is hard

Then I've got some hobbies I'm trying to learn or get back into such as
Snowboarding
Fly Fishing
Tennis
Pleasure reading (classics mainly)

How do you fit it all in? Does it simply come down to prioritizing and dropping some of the things I'm working on? I'm very close to putting Spanish on hold.
>>
>>31444071
i'd say focus on one major thing, with your minor things daily
eg

1 major - focus on side business

minor things - gym/ spainish/ piano

let's say you have 4 hours free, i'd go to the gym for 1 and a half hours, piano and spanish for 30 minutes each and then read a book about businesses

don't try to devide your spare time to even less intervals and get frustrated you aren't learning anything because you haven't given it enough time

i'd say make sure your "major" focuses of each day are at least an hour and a half long, and if you have more time continue with them; don't try to start learning about programming or build a deck
>>
>>31444220
>don't try to start learning about programming or build a deck

Thanks what you said makes good sense but this confused me.

I take a year off 4chan and get my life together, and the first time I get back you guys are doing this shit? You guys are doing gods work.

Resources that I found to be the most valuable:

Personal Finance.
No need to learn daytrading or how to analyze companies stock valuations yet. And for the love of god don't buy individual stocks based on your "intuition" or perceived "knowledge". Buy Vanguard or your countries equivalent Index Fund. IN THE BEGINNING YOUR SAVINGS RATE WILL BE THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ANYWAY. Anyone can become Financially Independent, even while working at McDolans. The first goal at the very least should beto work towards having Fuck You Money, it will feel a 1000 times better, and you'll be able to be more selective with job offers and career choices. 3-5 years of living expenses is a good first goal.

Tracks your spending. You have to be confronted with what you spend your money on (are those things really more important than Financial Security or even Independence?). If not Ameribrger (mint not available), I know in Scandinavia most of our banks have apps where you can see in detail all your spending with graphs and categories. This is more effective than any budget will ever be!

Meditation.
Will help with anxiety as much as many anxiolytics. Don't start with forcing yourself to try 30 minutes a day, you'll be overwhelmed and feel like a failure if you ever miss a day and then quit. Start with as little as possible, but be consistent. Sites in recommended order for a beginner:

>calm.com
Guided meditations from 2 to 20 minutes. Start with 2 min every day.
>headspace.com
After the first free 10 days, you can find a torrent with with the rest, posted by the guy himself.
>Waking Up by Sam Harris
More in depth book, + for not being hippy eastern bs mumbo jumbo. Guy is actual neuroscientist.
Productivity.
Setting small but manageable goals and practicing consistency. One goal at a time (each week f.ex.). ALWAYS TRACK YOUR PROGRESS to hold yourself accountable and to get that sweet sweet sense of accomplishment. I look forward to checking out habit.rpg. So far I've used:

>chains.cc
Every day to do a habit your chain grows longer, if you skip it the chains brakes and you start over again. (I prefer this over lyft.com).

>Wunderlist
To-do list program.

>WasteNoTime
Or any other browser extension that tracks time spent and has a blocking feature. You should 100% make it lock with a password that only someone else has (I have it active 6 days a week). Tell this other person to charge you money if you ever ask for it. Otherwise you will get around it on your own.

>Friend and family
Give embarrassing pictures of yourself to friend and tell him to post them online if you fail your goal.
Betting money is another option.
Setting up a social system for accountability, I set up daily skypes with a family member to check up on learning coding from him and for me to keep myself accountable to someone.

Philosophy.
For general life satisfaction, strength and sense of purpose. For me delving into Stoicism was key. Recommended places to start reading (2 fiction and the last one non-fiction):

>Zorba the Greek
Cultivating the good kind of IDGAF mindset about externalities through inner security. We should all be a little more like Zorba in spirit.
>Dune
If you can stand SF, this will motivate you more than any Arnold or Rocky speech ever. A journey to become a man and the inner changes you'll go through on the way there.
>Letter of a Stoic by Seneca
Read one letter every now and then, made me rethink my whole life. These 3 books are the ones I reread the most.
Bonus:
If you're generally gloomy or angry about life, this journal is worth it: fiveminutejournal.com/
"The opposite of anger is gratefulness"

Jim Rohn's lecture from the 80's:

"If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree."
"You can have more than you've got, because you can become more than you are"

I've always wanted to just put $1-200 dollars a week into a share account. How would I go about this? I'm an Australian teen.. my parents have played the stock market before and have been pretty iffy. I think they made 250-500k and bought investment properties and then lost 2-300k but had enough from the properties to cover it. They don't support me in giving me free cash and I hate asking for it when I want it, so I'm keen on getting started myself and investing in something worthwhile.

Any ideas on some reading ? Specifically Australian companies? I wonder what the monthly return would be like. If I could put 2-3 grand into shares and get payed out a little to keep re-investing I'd be over the moon.

Thanks for any help if possible.

>>31448221

http://www.investopedia.com/articles/younginvestors/09/5-books-for-investors.asp

Read those for investment strategies.

Second would be save up like 2k, and open a securities account with an investment bank, or your bank might do one. You don't want to buy new shares every week, because the brokerage fees will eat that shit up. Alternatively, if you want a good return on it, put it in a good aggressive mutual fund, and contribute to that every month.

Monthly returns/losses can be anywhere to +/-20%
>>
>>31448316
Yeah I'm with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia so they do one under CommSec.

I'll have a look into it and pour some money into it, see how it goes. 20% of 2k is like 400 ish that's pretty fucking good monthly.
>>
>>31448418

Honestly, if you only pick a couple of stocks, and don't have much idea what you're doing, its like 50/50 that you'll lose money too, you'll be very lucky if you beat the market yearly. If you want to do it for fun, thats fine. If you wanna do it for return, stick it in a managed fund, and watch what they do for a while.
>>
>>31448470
Yeah I don't mind losing a couple hundred to learn a few things. I'm big on 'experiences' and learning new shit, even if it costs me. Nothing is more valuable than knowledge so I really don't give a fuck. If it turns out good and I can charm it I'll be happy.

I went to school for 3 years and flicked between 3 different degrees and 3 majors in a business degree. Finance I found to be more fun, lots of advances math, things like the time value of money ect.

Depends what you want to do as a career.

Working towards selling sports nutrition products through ebay although I'd really, really prefer to do so through a local valet (eBay valet will not sell edible products) however i haven't had much luck in finding one. I'm also beginning to grow tomatoes to sell at my local farmer's market.

Self learning is not usable at all. It gives you knowledge of vocabulary and maybe a bit of sentence structure, but talking to people in the language, even in text form, is priceless. Consider going to french chatrooms to learn more.

Fapping and video games, while not inheritly negative, can be negative when done too much. I used to masturbate when procrastinating, and being on no-fap-ish thing helps with getting things done. The "time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted" thing is only true in small doses.

For the rest of it - you can make things flexible, the only aim is to get in a routine so you get things done, still a lot of time for friends.

>>
>>31451221
You can't ideal[sic] anybody because people like Arnold.... What are you trying to say?

Look confidence is built. Everytime you overcome nerves, confidence is built. A castle is build stone by stone, nail by nail.

It starts small. Real small. When you go buy milk as the cashier how their day is, mention the weather, real superficial.
Then move up, maybe you're sitting next to someone on the train or bus that you like the look of, say hi, you'll never see them again so what's there to lose?
Start something new, a hobby, somewhere unfamiliar and immerse yourself. Going to a new gym, or gymming on my own is still a bit difficult for me. Talk to a couple PTs at the gym etc stuff like that
>>

>>
>>31449439

>>
>>31451937
Strange how it works out. I'm just as avoidant on the net as IRL. Social anxiety, sure, but no real social "awkwardness"; more a fear of building relations with people. End result is the same, I guess, except I have an easier time talking with people in general

>>31451884
I can agree with this, I think. Violence should ofc be avoided (and it's dubious how much it actually would help, at least with some of the more esoteric MA:s), but just having some kind of familiarity with fighting back or throwing a punch in the back of your head probably helps a fair bit
>>
>>31452045
>Violence should ofc be avoided
Oh, I meant it as a purely mental pursuit. I added the functionality part mainly because if you are feeling down or angry, the feeling that you could use it and punch someone can put you on the path that leads to peace. The most spiritual person I know has been doing karate since he was about 6, which means that he could take pretty much anyone I know, but I am never afraid of it, since he is one of those "wouldn't hurt a fly unless life is in danger" guys.
>>
>>31452159

>>
>>31452166
No.

Really though, beyond the things already mentioned before, I don't have much experience. I know quite a bit about some things that I have not actually read, but that's mostly superficial and for conversations that aren't this purpose-driven.

I can suggest you a movie though - watch American Beauty. Just because.

Read some of 59 seconds: Think a little, change a lot.

It's a book that's presented in a very logical way, which is something that everyone here should like, full with citations. I think that it is a good read if your current goal is to get out of the emotional hole that you are in. In the worst case, you will waste a couple of minutes, in the best case, it will change your world view, so it's worth checking out. Nothing I've read so far can have negative consequences, and it helps you get to the things talked about.

I can't really "give it" to you but http://www.amazon.com/Mob-Rules-Mafia-Legitimate-Businessman-ebook/dp/B004IYISX0
>>
>>31453598
Change your focus. When you get compliments, believe the person saying them if you know them, and repeat them to yourself several times afterwards. Remember they're also referring to what you have done, not you as a person. It is external so keep it that way. Ultimately it is your estimation that matters, compliments and insults shouldn't really affect you either way.
But yeah, can't recommend much more than focussing your attention on the positives repeating them to yourself writing them down saying it out loud that kind of thing. Don't ruminate, it's a painful waste of your life which you'll only regret later, massively.

I would like to remind you people a lesson I seem to have to re-learn a bit too often for my taste.

Tell your friends you appreciate them. In my experience, hearing someone say that they have not felt appreciated enough a single time is much worse than hearing "Oh, you don't have to tell me that" a thousand times. Think of all the times a single nice comment has made your day and made you feel better about a person. Think about how you've felt down because nobody said anything to you, and while you knew that they liked you, someone saying would have been helpful.

Just go and say something nice to a friend, even if it's the one that often annoys you or whatever.

Hello Financebrah, and anyone else who wants to opinate, I need some help.
First of all, I'm currently a petroleum engineering undergraduate, which means that if I manage to land a job I'll be making some solid money, even out of college.
Recently I've started receiving a scholarship and after paying for necessities, I'm left with 66US$ in local money. I was planning on investing half of it, mostly to get some experience before I do it with real money, and spending the rest freely.

What I'm in doubt about is, should I do that, or just use the whole amount in myself? By that I don't mean drinking/going out, but stuff like whey and fish oil(I'm almost at the end of a cut from obese levels, so I want to start using those when I bulk), vitamin C for my acne scars, or clothes(for the same reason as the first items, fit is starting to become an issue)

That got a little long, so summarizing: when you have little money, is it better to get investing experience for when you start doing more of it, or to invest in yourself and raise the chances of getting a good job?

With $66, go out and have the time of your life making new friends and networking and getting them social gains.
>>
oh boy the edgy anti military brigade is here
>>
>>31457164
That's a good idea, I've been neglecting that side because I've been pretty sucessful with it inside college. I guess it's time to go out and expand my social circle now.
I was invited to hang out tomorrow and had postponed the reply, time to say yes.
>>
>>31457103
Holy fucking shit bro, you've got a chance to be rich out of your mind. M8 if can't get paid work experience, do some unpaid volunteer work. Even if you have to do it for a whole year, do it. I'm a civil engineering student myself.
Also you can't invest in anything with $66. But then again I'm a recovering fatarse and neet. From my "common sense" (mind you I do some really stupid shit very often) you'd need to have a few thousands to do some relevant investing. But it seems like you'll most likely make it. Just don't fuck it up bro.

Shit this ended up longer than I thought.

Not this anon, but I have a habit with being clingy with people in real life. Likely because I have very few real friends I tend to latch on to certain people. This is the third time in my life I've gotten very attached to someone and I don't want to make them sick of me, but I find that I want to be around them almost constantly. Im not sure how I can give them space but also feel alright with my not being around them as often. Im guessing the obvious answer would be to make more friends, but I have trouble forming relationships with people I am not accustomed enough to, as in I tend to very guarded with people I haven't had at least a few months of frequent contact with. Despite having two (maybe 3) friends I'm bizarrely strict about who I want as a friend.

>>31457103

Put most of it (50K) into index funds. In 10 years you'll have made 50 K in passive income. Put the rest to traveling. For highest return on money, go to a good language school for at least a month in the foreign country, the better the school the more likely that the networking talent is better.
Also: http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/05/18/how-to-make-money-in-the-stock-market/
tl:dr are you Warren Buffet or Gordon Gecko? If no, buy low cost index funds.

>>31448221

In general, I avoid actively managed mutual funds and go with Index Funds instead.

The Bet: Warren Buffet & the S&P 500 vs 5 mutual funds chosen by Protégé Partners

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/27/your-money/heads-or-tails-either-way-you-might-beat-a-stock-picker.html

“Taken to its logical extreme, it means that a blindfolded monkey throwing darts at a newspaper’s financial pages could select a portfolio that would do just as well as one carefully selected by the experts,” - A Random Walk Down Wall Street

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/15/your-money/how-many-mutual-funds-routinely-rout-the-market-zero.html?_r=0

'...what you never have, he said, is any indication that past performance predicts future returns. “It’s possible that any one of these funds will beat the market over the long term,” he said. “Some of them will do that. But the problem is that we don’t know which of them will do that in advance.”'

http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/04/real-cost-mutual-fund-taxes-fees-retirement-bernicke.html

So if mutual funds generally don't beat the market, but take more in fees, how much does fees actually matter?:

Jason: $100,000 growing at 7% (minus 3% in annual fees) = $324,340
Matthew: $100,000 growing at 7% (minus 2% in annual fees) = $432,194
Taylor: $100,000 growing at 7% (minus 1% in annual fees) = $574,349

Three people with the same time horizon, similar growth, but onle a couple of percentages difference in fees.

Yep pretty much this. Index fund tend to be the best kind of mutual fund, unless you're feeling adventurous. You can hold them for a long time, but with an actively managed one, you tend to hold for less time, just while they are doing well for whatever reason.

Sorry if this has been answered but how do I deal with the niggling frustration of feeling like I'm too old for to be as close to the start line as I am?

Just a quick backstory suffered from depression, anxiety for a long ass time, my early 20's were a disaster I started to get my shit together around 24 now I'm 26 finishing up my first year of community college with all A's with hopes of become a psychiatrist. I'm gettin' fit, it feels great, been on my meds for about a year now and they're working fantastic I feel far more balanced then I've been in a long, long time.

Even though I've come so far and am proud of it every now and then the age thing comes up and just bothers the hell out of me. On my current path I've got another 11 years of school/med school/medical residency which isn't the issue, I want to do the work I'm motivated as hell to do it, that's not the issue just knowing I'll be a 30 year old sitting in a class full of kids in their early 20's, it bugs me.

Sorry for the long post but it's without a doubt my biggest hurdle atm.

Nice trips. My thoughts on this are that it's a waste of time. Sure, you might gain an understanding of how to flip items and make some gaben coins off your hats. If you had instead done three days of work you would have earned much more than that. But keep at it if you think it's rewarding. No reason to stop if it isn't getting in the way of your goals and is done in your free time.

>>HOLY FUCK THIS IS SO FUN

Maybe it's at least partly because I haven't touched any vidya in over a year (though I never played much anyway). I wonder what happens once you stop using it though. I remember from a study showing that giving highschoolers an external motivator to do better on tests (money reward) did have a positive effect up to a certain point, but once they stopped it their grades went down (became worse than before any reward system) since the external motivator had replaced their inner motivators. Though I doubt the rewards in habit.rpg are strong enough to have that effect.

Also does anyone have experience that goes something like this almost all the time; talk to a random dude but the next time you see him he just tries to ignore you ( I mean you can clearly see it in his eyes he noticed and remembered you but makes a poor attempt to ignore you, I mean if he wants I can teach him how to ignore people but why would he do it to me, come on get to my level if you want to do that), also other people you know from before just don't want to talk to you but you still go to talk to them to get rid of your social anxiety and to improve social skills but they literally became energy vampires and shit. If so how did you solve this and become a sociable person. Also people just ignore and stop trading to you mid conversation.
Sorry this turned out longer than expected.

First thing is this... you won't remain alone.
Don't worry about that. If you are a man with a job, sooner or later a woman will want to breed with you. I'm in my 30s and witness this phenomena daily. Bitches' biological clock goes nuts and they grab a guy. There is no way a man working in a decent job in science will end up alone. So rest easy in that regard.

Next off, the fact that you say you've no hobby is precisely why lifitng is going well and your studies are good.

I have the opposite problem. I've too much to do, too many friends and too many interests. So, none really go too well. I've had to cut things out of my life.

So, lets look again at your state of play...
a) You're guaranteed to find a mate in the future, so rest easy.
b) you've got a simple life that you are in total control of

So, you're doing pretty well (that's without adding in the fact that you live away from home successfully (many people can't do this), you're lifting and studying well and you'll almost certainly have a good career).

So, you're pretty much set.

Now you want to ad friends. Good. You need to join a society in your Uni. That's very useful. Lifting, Chemistry, general bullshit, there's socs for all that shit and they are very open and friendly.

If you're bad a meeting people you can probably post on a societies facebook page / forum page and say you want to join but that you're shy and are worried about that. People will then make a conscious effort to be nice to you when you do arrive.

Think of these experiences as your education in socializing, just like you're getting an education in science.

Sign up for a charity challenge - a great way to do something meaningful, gives you a great short term goal, allows you to meet lots of people & usually gives you a t-shirt at the end to advertises you are a nice, caring person, who does interesting challenges. All of that will be true & you'll be able to meet friends / make friends based on those experiences.
>>
>>31480432
Oh, and I should add, finding a new place to live with cool people is an excellent idea.
>>
>>31480519
>you've got a simple life that you are in total control of

I've been thinking often about exactly this
this is the problem
life is way too fucking simple right now
I don't mean "easy"
I mean a simple life, just lifting and studying, not much else going on

also I'm not even bad at meeting new people, I just don't have that much opportunities to meet new people
the (small) town I live in is like 20 minutes outside of the town where my uni is
there is nothing to do here for students
and when I try to make plans with people from uni, they usually got other plans with their own friends

moving to my uni town and finding some housemates will probably give more social opportunities. so I'm probably going to do that soon

When did you guys become entirely self-sufficient? I'm 21 and I would kill to be self-sufficient right now. I'm working on getting a job so I can save for university overseas when I finish my language exams so I don't think it'll happen before then
>>
>>31481422
Depending on others gives you a large safety net, which should be used as much as possible (without becoming a leech) until you are safely able to be self-sufficient.

Depending on where you live, you might want to study in your home country, but if you are not from US, it is always a good place to study, given that you get in a good university. I would really suggest at least trying for some of the Ivy League places, since multiple of those have full need-blind admissions (check the Wikipedia article on that) which would make you nearly self-sufficient as you are studying, with the added benefit of having a great education.

>>
Don't know if you're still here financebrah but I have a few questions. I was hoping you could advise me on what you would do in my situation.

1. I'm 23. I've been working a new job for 3 months now that I absolutely hate. It pays 41k which isn't bad for where I live (Rhode island ) , and it fits with my retarded major (political science). I had to bust my ass to get here, but the work is getting shittier by the day. To add to this, we are paid hourly, however it is expected that we stay, unpaid, at least an additional half hour late each day, plus an additional 1 to 2 hours when staff meetings are held. No work is left during these times, but the supervisor insists we must sit in the office regardless. I wouldn't normally care about this too much, but this additional time causes me to hit rush hour traffic due to where I work, adding at least 40 minutes to my commute compared to i I left when I stopped getting paid. Any attempts to compromise on this have been responded to by my supervisors saying I'm an "at will employee " and "we only expect the best here" implying I'd be fired if I make a big deal about it. This is for a high office in state government , so reporting it to a labor board really won't work when they also work for my boss.

All of this adds up to me spending about 11 to 12 hours a day prepping, commuting, and working. However, despite having an impressive resume, the job market is awful here, and government jobs are dominated by nepotism. I'm not confident that I could find employment if I left. This job would need at least 2 years before I could even begin to seek advancement. Is all this bullshit worth it?

2. On home buying. I've got 11k in a vanguard fund and 41k saved currently. I live at home but am being understandably pressured to move out asap. Starter homes range from 90 to 140k here for 2 bed 1 ba or more. Should I be considering purchasing a home in my situation? Especially considering the volatility of my job.

I'm 22 years old and after spending 2 years in university studying history and 1 in 'high trade school' studying programming, I've realized that I just want a chill job and ain't nothing more chill than hairdressing, but people have always told me I'm smart and I had to study.

Is it a good idea to follow my heart and go for something 'lowly' like hairdressing? I feel like I'm wasting myself but I really can't be fucking bothered with anything else, I want something simple and manual, something you can just relax and not have to worry about when you get back home.
>>
>>31483083

1. That all depends on what you want in life man, most jobs will start you off with a couple of years of bullshit, but if it pays well at the end of it, and you'll be happy after you've advanced, then it might well be worth it, I can't answer that one for you exactly.

2. You can put a solid 30-40% down on a house, if you deicde to stick it out with your job, then I'd say it was worth it if you have decent job security. The alternative, would be to buy a duplex and rent one part out, and that should cover all if not the majority of your mortgage, and give you a little more security.
