I have a friend who is 6'2" 230lbs and couldnt have been over 20 percent bodyfat, who never lifted a day in his life and only played basketball. After a month of lifting at the age of 20 his max bench press was 325lbs and he was doing 4pl8 deadlifts for reps.

Say that to my training partner who got a 300kg deadlift and 260kg squat after 6 months of lifting doing a fuckarounditis routine, and after 3 years of lifting now has a 865kg Powerlifting total and is the strongest Powerlifter in Australia despite being a chainsmoker who doesn't do any accessory work and only lifts twice a week and works full time manual labor.
Some people are just better than others at certain things, he was made to be strong, doesn't mean you can't get far with hard work though.

I'm not sure it's entirely based on upbringing though.
From a young age my parents encouraged me to do sports, signing me up for soccer and T-ball when I was probably 5 or 6.
But I was absolute ass at these games. So was my brother. I didn't have the natural drive or competition to run after the ball, I was always afraid of getting hurt. I searched for bugs in the grass instead of running after the ball.
When my parents introduced me to piano and music at a slightly later age, I immediately was very good at it. It didn't require the aggression and drive that sports did, while playing off my natural thoughtfulness and creativity.
There is 100% a genetic aspect to this sort of divide - some people are just more internal, thoughtful, and creative. Others are more external, competitive, and driven.
