I need some advice powerlifters. Should i squat low bar? Most powerlifters seem to. I've read there is a 5-10% weight increase from high to low.

I've been doing low bar the last couple days with really low weight and it feels pretty uncomfortable. Is it worth learning and using ? DYEL please go back to /b/
>>
Do both, but you will get more weight out of low bar.
It's somewhat a blanket statement but high bar = quads/lower back dominant, lowbar can use more glutes/hamstrings
>>
Low bar is hard to learn correctly
>>
>>37871151
Is this image accurate? If so my low bar has been way too low
>>
>>37871201
Rest the bar on rear delts. Its correct position. Bring the bar up some. I dont see how you even keep the bar on your back going lower than that.

Must be lifting low weight
>>
>>37871212
Yep. In my second week. 55kg.
>>
>>37871170
high bar isn't more lower back dominant, that makes no sense. compare the bottom positions and you'll see clearly that the the low bar has a more horizontal back angle, which in turn places more stress on the low back.
>>
>>37871224
He heard someone say that once so he decided to repeat it
>>
>>37871200
1. With your shoulders retracted, sit the bar on your rear deltoids. Grip the bar as narrow as you can comfortably, with your thumb over the bar (not around), and your other fingers touching it. Your wrists should either be neutral or in slight extension.

2. Stand with your feet slightly more than shoulder width, with your toes pointing outwards around 30 degrees. Look slightly down, or straight ahead.

3. Sit your hips back, shove your knees out, take a deep breath into your stomach, and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor or lower.

4. Raise your hips at the bottom to begin the drive back up.

Four steps. Devil is in the details, but the basic movement ain't that hard.
>>
I recently switched from high to low bar
never going back, it feels amazing
make sure you point your elbows back to create a shelf between your traps and rear delts
this way you can comfortably place the bar on your back
once I figured this out low bar felt comfy as fuck
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=g2tyOLvArw0
>>
>>37871298
>>37871212
the bar shouldn't be on the rear delts
it should be in the crease inbetween your traps and your rear delts, just below the spine of your scapula
"elbows up" create this shelve
>>
>>37871332
Ok
>>
So is low bar the way to go ?

>>
>>37871151
Are you a competitive powerlifter?

If not, it doesn't matter.
>>
>>37874510
It matters if you want to move the most weight possible right?
Eddie hall set a deadlift record. No one gives a shit he wore straps.

Same if i post a video on Instagram. If i post 575 high bar and 600 low bar people wont say wow the high bar is more impressive
>>
>>37874454

Depth for either one as far as you should be concerned unless you're literally training specifically for Olympic style squatting should be hip crease below the knee. Some powerlifters do like to go deeper though to take advantage of the stretch reflex.

>probably lost their virginity at an early age
>helps others
>has an active sex life
>is well respected by his friends and peers

Alan Thrall says low bar squat is too similar to deadlift.
>>
>>37874454
You can go lower. As you do it more, you'll work out how low you need to go to get the most out of the stretch reflex at the bottom to aid you coming back up.

However, you shouldn't go so low that your lowe back starts to round. If you do that, you'll have to 'unfurl' your back as you go back up and that's a recipe for snapcakes.
>>
>>37871151
Low bar is the way to go for most people looking to compete. I have a shoulder issue, so I'm stuck doing high bar.

Squat high bar unless you're preparing for a competition.

If you can't high bar squat, you can't squat properly anyways.

Why?

Mike tuscherer squats low bar and hes stronger than most people in thr world.
>>
I've been doing low bar since I started lifting like 2 years ago and after reading SS a couple of times and watching loads of videos I have decided to switch to high bar once I hit my 1RM on LB.

I wanna squat ATG. It improves athleticism and translates better to other sports.
>>

What's wrong with him? I watch his videos occasionally. Does he get things wrong?
>>
>>37875542
>I wanna squat ATG. It improves athleticism and translates better to other sports.
wrong. low bar translates better to sports. your quads are not that important for athleticism, while glutes, hamstrings and low back most definitely are.
>>
Which makes you stronger? Or does it matter.

It would make sense to me to high bar squat in training. Then maybe two or three weeks out from a meet switch to low bar to get technique down.

>low bar squat
>>
>>37875563
that doesn't make any sense. low bar lets you squat more weight because you use more muscle mass, which means more muscle mass is trained heavy when you train it, which means you get stronger. this is the whole reason why rip wants people to squat low bar. he doesn't give a shit about powerlifting competitions anymore, he wants to make people strong.
>>
>>37875602
I dont. It was an example. I did 475 two months ago without knee sleeves and a shit tier belt high bar.

I know ive got 500 with sleeves and a good belt easy.

I was thinking i could probably get 550 with low bar. But i havent really seen anything definitive in low bar other than yes you can move more weight.

But if i can be a stronger squatter training high bar i dont want to give that up.

Fucking idiots. Highbar does in fact place more stress on the lower back than the lowbar,

Look at it this way. When you front-squat, what's the first to fail? Your legs? No, your back always rounds and you drop the bar before your legs fail if you're like most people.

This is because, despite the difference in back angle, the bar is placed further in front of the spinal erectors and the bar then has a longer moment arm with respect to them. It's the same in high-bar squatting, your back will fail before your legs will fail.

Compared to a low-bar squat, though the back angle is greater, the actual moment arm between the bar and the spinal erectors is shorter. However, it increases the load on the hips by about 10 - 15% IIRC. However, because even with a 10-15% increase in load the hips are almost never really maxed out in a squat, you're usually able to squat more in a lowbar.

In other words, the only real important difference is going to come down to how strong your back is, especially your thoracic spinal erectors. If they're strong enough to keep up with the load, you high bar and low bar will be more or less the same.

Jesus christ, I see this argument so fucking often on /fit/ and nobody knowing what they talk about that I'm really tempted just to save a reply to copy and paste.

This should be mandatory reading for everyone on /fit/:

http://strengtheory.com/its-time-to-end-this-nonsense-high-bar-vs-low-bar-squatting/

and no, you don't actually have to enter your email. Just click "I hate free stuff" to close the stupid banner. because apparently people couldn't figure it out the last time I posted this.
>>

You wouldn't train only Incline Bench then switch to regular a week before a meet.

>>
>>37874647
Why would you want to do that? If you're not competing, weight means nothing. If you wanna get strong or gain mass, it's about muscle engagement, not weight.

>>
>>37875879
He's about as lean as a natty can be while weighing 265lb
>>
>>37875343
This. If you're just lifting for building muscle and generally being healthy, low bar is totally unnecessary. Only top tier elite lifters need to do low bar, and even then they probably still do high bar along with it.
>>
>>37875822
Right. So you're trying to get strong. Your emphasis should be on which variation enables you to gain strength fastest, not which allows you to lift the most weight.

Maybe theyre the same f-for you, but they're aren't necessarily the same. Like I said, it's about muscle engagement.
>>
>>37875553
Lmao quads allow you to sprint better and jump higher. Last time I checked that helps in nearly every non-gay sport.
>>
>>37875548
He's occasionally said stupid things. If he's said low bar squatting is similar to deadlifting, that'd be one of them.

Although I highly doubt he has said that because deadlifts and ANY type of squat are nothing like each other and he should fucking well know better.
>>
>>37875937
You ability to explode is rooted almost entirely in your hip strength which is pretty vital in non-gay sports, douchecanoe.
