This one college gym I went to for a little while had the same shoe rule. One day I accidentally wore my running shoes there on leg day, so I squatted barefoot. I got through a couple sets before an employee caught me and told me to put my shoes back on.
They also didn't allow ANY chalk, which I was really salty about at first until I realized I didn't need it that much. Oh well, only went there for a couple weeks anyway.
