Ooh, let me answer this one. As someone who is still a recovering fatass (54 lbs gone, about 70 more to go, yes I was pushing 400 when I started, shut up), you have to understand that some people, like myself, are psychologically addicted to food.
Like, it's hard to describe that I think about it, but like, imagine that you can't differentiate between tasty and not tasty food. Like, think of your favorite food that is salty, sweet, and savory. Now imagine ALL food tastes like that.
Then add to the fact that when you eat, you get a release of endorphins that is equivalent to sex or lifting. Then add to the fact that because of this, your short-term reward circuits in your brain are basically constantly demanding more and more and more, constantly, because you now psychologically want that stimulus.
Now, I'm not making excuses for myself personally here. 30 years of bad eating will catch up to you at some point and the reason why I'm losing weight is because it started giving me health problems when I hit 30. Before? I seriously considered the constant "feel good" sensation to be better than looking good or having health issues down the line (it helped that I was able to find chubby chaser girls, so I wasn't sexually frustrated). Now that I started having problems with breathing and blood pressure, well, now it became easier, because now it swings in the opposite direction - I feel better every day, because my body isn't overstressed, and me eating food now causes a slightly opposite reaction - I detest myself for it. And even STILL I have cheat days.
Am I gonna make it? I dunno. We'll see.
But tl;dr - food addiction is a terrible thing.
