If they ever break out of the mould it'll be when they can finally overthrow those shackles. Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Frank Miller and Alan Moore stuff basically were good attempts at doing different things. But there's still a long way to go.

What we're seeing now is that, for example in western animation: Up until the 80s cartoons were for kids, but anime and manga brought over the idea that they could have complex stories rather than episodic ones and heavy adult themes. So now young talents who grew up with these exposures to anime and manga are now contributing in a way that hasn't happened up until now.
