Why did lifting literally kill my gaming "addiction" over-night?

It's been 4 years since I started lifting and I haven't touched a video game since. The interest just died over night.

Is it possible that something else in life might end up killing the interest in lifting for me? I fucking hope it doesn't.....please tell me lifting is immune to this...
>>
Lifting hasn't killed my internet addiction.
>>
>>37647674
same reason getting laid broke my porn addiction
>>
OP here.

When I say "addiction" I don't mean some reddit tier non-sense.

I literally dropped out of highschool in 2004 to play WoW.
>>
>>37647674
good for you, I wish I could stop playing.

>tfw playing vidya and lifting takes up so much of my time
>>
>>37647691

Probably because you found leveling up in real life to be more satisfying then Blizzard's grind.
>>
>>37647690
Gaming = progressing character
Lifting = progressing real life character (your body)

So I guess that's why lifting killed my gaming addiction? I just replaced 1 MMORPG (WoW) with another (Lifting)

I guess if you're getting solid good sex regularly it over rides the care factor for porn.

Getting a PR in the gym, or seeing a new vein or reaching a new level of bodyfat gives me the same hype as I got in WoW when I reached a certain rating in arena, or killed some boss/got some new weapon etc.

>>
>>37647727
Full-time study-load in university, and working part-time and lifting.

Gaming seems pointless to me now. I'm not the type of person who can just play a game for 1-2 hours and that's it.

When I was on WoW I was playing 6-12 hours a day. I can't imagine just dropping in and out of gaming for short periods of time, for me it's either all or nothing.

I can't enjoy gaming on a casual-fag basis.
>>
>>37647674
well strength training kind of resembles a game. you level yourself up and constantly improve and face challenges, sometimes you stall and have to be creative. as long as you enjoy it could very well be the best game.
>>
I noticed that too.
Now I basically have to force myself to sit there and play games.
I still addicted to just buying games though; I dont even play em, they just sit there. I even have a fucking typed out list of upcoming games I need to buy

video games were a pacifier replacement for the physical stimulus your ancestral body craves. Given the physical stimulus of lifting heavy weights that your body actually wanted your replacement craving for flashing lights disappeared.

WoW has a pretty solid system in place that gives rewards bit by bit which keep people playing. The same endorphin release I get from lifting when having a really good session, hitting a new PR, flexing in the mirror etc.... I use to get from WoW when I would get an item, or a new high arena rating or killed a new boss etc.

I played WoW non-stop from age 17 to 25 NEET (2004 - 2012)

Then started lifting in 2012 because I woke up 1 day and had an epiphany. In 2014 I started university and in 2015 I got a part-time job.

Now lifting, full-time university and working part-time.

I guess the life-style change could have made me not give a shit about gaming anymore.

Video gaming is just like any other media.

Your life never had to revolve around it in the first place.

I'm not sure why some of you can't balance your hobbies like adults.
>>
>>37647964
Lifting teaches/trains virtues such as patients and dedication and willpower.

What does gaming teach? Literally NOTHING. It shouldn't be a surprise if you grew up gaming all your life that you end up with less than the greatest virtues in life.

Gaming design is an Artform. All the software coding, visuals, audio engineering and craftsmanship to creating the most advanced simulation (aka Phantom Pain) available to us common folks is a pretty decent fucking experience.

I started lifting about a month ago, and I literally did the exact same thing, the solo queue session wasn't going too great either and something in me just snapped, sold everything the next day and I've felt so much more in control with my life.

I think it's something to do with video games themselves, they formulate a false belief that you're accomplishing something you're actually not, you're basically tricking your brain into believing you're going out there and accomplishing shit that makes you alpha, you think game developers don't know this? They DO know, and they capitalise on it, they capitalise on the nature of man, it's scary once you come to the realisation of it all, but it just motivates me more than anything to be different than all the fucking betas out there and use my time for the more important things in life that will be of more use to me than video games will ever be.

Ultimately, you just have to find it in yourself to detach yourself from the false world of video games, you can read more about this by searching "video games and dopamine" or something along those lines, it really fucks up your reward system, hence why you always want to come back for more, for anyone reading this - just drop it all together, it'll do you a whole world of good, trust me. Again, I or no one can really change your mind, you have to find it in yourself to make that step and truly detach yourself from gaming, I reached that boiling point which is why I quit, and i'm glad I did, peace.

Anyone who 'quits' vidya was playing them for the wrong reasons in the first place. If you're simply playing them for the sake of simulating things that you could otherwise experience better by actually doing them, then you're missing the point. Ideally, you're playing to experience things with no real life equivalent.

Video games got boring after i started playing them with friends, not even kidding

Used to be a wow addict / console fag until highschool, after that i started playing with old friends (people i knew since kindergarten) on skype and ever since then playing vidya alone just isn't fun, pretty much any game that has coop for at least 4 ppl is fun as shit if you're playing it with friends. even league of legends is fun if you're playing it with 4 other mates.

I couldn't get through witcher 3 because sitting there for 5 hours by myself was just too much for me

But vidya is still my favorite form of entertainment

Depends on the games. Flight sims teach you the basics of aeronautics. Kerbal Space Program helps people master orbital mechanics by putting theory into practice. Strategy and tactics games like civ, total war, EUIV, etc., teach you about history, military tactics and strategical thinking.

Obviously shoot-em-up's aren't going to be anything other than entertainment but to write off the entire medium as devoid of any merit is stupid.

I play like 2-3 hours of vidya a week, usually Friday when the gf is still at work but I have off. When I'm not pursuing my other hobby (brewing beer).

Now I simply have less time to fucking play them because work etc. but I don't think that for people like me that gamed since they were like 4, and play shit like Ultima and Daggerfall in childhood there is a way to "escape" gaming...it might also have to do with the fact that I am a concept artist at a game dev studio but still, I doubt I would completely abandon vidya if my career choices were different.

What is it with 4chan and not being able to balance hobbies like adults? People here get addicted to vidya, then go cold turkey and cut it off completely, then post to a congratulatory circlejerk how much better they are now that they don't play 10 hours a day. You realize the problem was with you, not the hobby?
>>
If anything running didn't replace vidya, it just complemented it. I play video games mostly for the feeling of exploration and discovery, and running fulfills a similar need since I enjoy running around my neighborhood and in parks seeing new places. It would be silly to say I can only do one though.

I lost interest in games slowly, not because of lifting, but it is true that the more I lift, the less I have time or care to play vidya. It's been almost a year without playing vidya.

It just doesn't feel right to play games for me. Most of them became just like another job. You gotta grind to get stronger, collect thousands of shitty stuff that I don't really care about and at the end they became all open world with the same base mechanics.

I just played Uncharted 4 for two hours at a bro , watched some Zelda videos from this E3 and spent 10 hours in the whole year playing Nuclear Throne. That's it.
>>
Respect for you fucks who broke out of the NEET/gaming meme early on.

I didn't until I was 30(though health issues were a major factor in helping keep me NEET that long) and really wish I had broken free earlier. Glad I did it while I was still young but def feel like I missed out some.

31 and a half now and I barely game anymore, work out regularly, have a solid job, and have had more sex in the past year than I did in my entire 20's(all of two times).

Aside from my health greatly improving, I think games, especially WoW, being shit was what mainlymade me break free but I fear myself falling into Battlefield 1 for a month or two when it comes out. Looks so damn good.
>>
90s early 00s were a golden age for vidya, i dont regret that. I do wish i started lifting earlier though, but there was no need for me to until i actually did.

On rest day I literally play games and watch anime

Every other day is serious and devoted to work/fitness

If I find time tho I'll squeeze in some game/anime time

But really, I think the reason why a lot of dudes play vidya is simply because there is a self-imposed challenge that they can easily get into without the physical strife

I used to be a super turbo nerd gamer as well.

I'll explain to you why it killed your gaming addiction. Lifting is an activity that heightens yourself, your body, and your mind. You want to learn about your body and the human body and you do naturally through lifting. You subconsciously start to see that video games don't do shit for you postively other than just be a time killer if you need to kill time. You don't even notice it right away because your mind is a powerful thing. It naturally just switches when you move forward.

I went thru that same kinda transition. I still play video games but maybe once or twice every 1-2 weeks for a few hours. Honestly I like it better that way. I buy maybe 1-3 games a year now. Saves me money and I waste less time that I can be using to be more productive.

No other activity will really kill your desire to lift. You might go thru a hiatus with lifting but you'll always go back to it generally if you are about that shit. Your body's want to exercise becomes lower or higher depending on the time of year and shit so basically work with that as well. Know yourself and your body.

Welcome to forward thinking and moving, OP. Keep moving forward.

Good for you I guess?

I like video games, its a great indoors hobby for someone who dislikes TV and its not a Netflix addict. Playing video games doesn't make you unable to lift heavy or make you an anti-social twat. So sounds to me you are just super invested and hyped about lifting right now that nothing else seems to be important. Which is good, ride that feeling as much as you can OP, just don't stop lifting when the feeling dies out, it will happen eventually.

Lifting is a lot more about discipline than hype.

>tfw trying to complete Loremaster achievement in WoW while working 8 hours per day
>tfw refused a booty call on Tinder because my autism demanded me to finish all the outlands maps that weekend.

I don't even care senpai, having Loremaster before the next expac hits will be more rewarding than night of meaningless sex with a basic bitch.

geting a kid may have the chance of killing lifting like that.

When you realize that you now have to take care of another human being, you can quickly decide that lifting is not as important as this little lad/lass.

I dont know OP, but ive found myself being less interested in vidya too, especially recently now ive switched to lifting 4 days a week.

My theory is that lifting scratches the same kind of itch that gaming does. I was always a sucker for perfecting games, getting 100% completion, unlocking all achievements, etc. I've just traded that for levelling up my body, hitting milestones and so on. I graph my lifts and check off workout days on a calendar. It's pretty aspie but I need that kind of structure to commit to long term projects.

Playing lots of video games and watching anime is for fucking losers, OP you probably already subconsciously knew this and picking up the iron was the nail in the coffin for you to put down the childish things and starting to actually feel like a man.
>>
>>37663528
I'm not saying that it is a good thing, but it happens in a lot of people's minds.

>>37663563
how do I fucking lose this shit loser attitude though? I've been lifting for a year and still fuck away half the day on vidya.
