How the fuck does lifting work? Apparently 5x5 is common. If someone does 5x5 and they do the four basic lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press) that's 100 total reps. Which should only take like 10 minutes. But supposedly a typical lifting session is 45-60 minutes. How the fuck does this work? How many reps does a person do (total, not just of one exercise) in a lifting session? How long does a rep take? How much time is spent lifting vs resting between sets? How much time, if any, is spent on warmup and cooldown exercises? How the fuck can 100 reps take an hour?

Read the sticky

Oh and if someone is doing 5x5, do they do all 5 sets of one exercise before moving to the next, or do they do one set of one, one set of the next, etc?

I have never lifted in a gym but I am going to get a gym membership and start lifting soon. I am in good shape, I do a fuckload of cardio, but I have never lifted a barbell. Hence why I don't know the answers to my questions. Hence why I want to know the answers.

How about you go lift then and read the sticky

>>37609007
All 5 sets of one, it hits your muscles harder and will help them develop more. Doing one set of each is called a circuit, and it's more cardio-esque while allowing your muscles to relax until the next single set.
>>
>>37609035
A rep should only take a few seconds (right?), so even with rest time, it seems like 10 minutes, or 20 max, would be plenty of time for 100 reps. Do people really spend 3x as much time resting as lifting?
>>37609045
Thanks!
>>
You rest 2-3 minutes between each set. This is in the sticky. Read it.
>>
>>37609066

when you are lifting the maximum amount of weight you possibly can for a set of 5 your relevant muscles to that lift will feel like they are going to die

you wait 4-5 minutes and somehow you're capable of doing the same thing 5 more times

you do this for each set for each lift
>>
>>37609066
>Do people really spend 3x as much time resting as lifting?

Yes.

3-5 minutes rest for big compound lifts(dead lifts, squats, bench, rows)

~2.5 minutes rest for isolation-type lifts like curls, lat pulldowns, etc
>>
>>37609011
Go to Backpages and pay $60-80 for a thirty minute session with an escort.

Read the fucking sticky. If you're doing stronglifts which is what it looks like then WATCH MEHNDIS VIDEOS HE EXPLAINS THE ENTIRE 5X5 PROGRAM AND TELLS YOU HOW MUCH REST YOU SHOULD TAKE. Stronglifts routine is usually atleast 30 mins in the gym

Goodluck trying to do all those in one workout dumbass. You've obviously never lifted weights and it shows. Stop reading so much into shit and start putting it into practice. When you go to the gym and start lifting things will become alot more clear to you.

Take a look at my time tables.

If you are lifting hard, the workout will take at least 45 minutes for three exercises.

Notice that the chart doesn't include set up time or warm up sets (assuming you're talking about strong lifts which is 5 working sets).

You're welcome. Honestly, I think stronglifts is too much volume for beginners.

Classic 5x5's are actually 3x5 with two warm up sets (pic related).

The key is to learn the lifting form well (Search "the Art of manliness squat" on YouTube for some decent instruction on the squat, bench, overhead press, and deadlift).

Then, only do a weight you can handle with good form for all sets.

Get fractional plates (1.25 lbs) so you can increase the upper body lifts by 2.5 lbs. Lower body can be 5 lbs.

Increase after every successful workout.

If you want to keep it really simple, do basic starting strength:

Squat
Bench or vertical press (these alternate workouts)
Deadlift
Chin ups (weighted once you get to 10)

Thanks! I saved this thread offline so I can reference all the info in the future. You've been very helpful.

Yeah what you described is essentially a full body routine which isn't the best option if you want to see gains. You'll usually try focusing on one or two muscle groups a day.
>Eg: legs, back biceps, chest triceps,
Because after you work one muscle group you'll have to give it time to recover and grow which you do that by resting. But instead of doing nothing while you rest you actually workout, you workout a different muscle group while the previous recovers.
5x5 is ok but I prefer higher reps like 12x3 type routines. I feel as though they work my muscle more than 5x5 and they are also don't zap me of energy like 5x5 does. 5x5 is most certainly better for strength though make no mistake. After each set you usually take around 2-5 minute break in between so your muscles can recover and you can bust out another set. Hence the reason working out takes so long.

>Increase after every successful workout
Not OP but what constitues a "successful" workout?
What do you do if your workout is not "successful"?
>>
>>37610237

Did you hit the full sets and reps at the given weight on that movement? That's successful.
>>
>>37610254
Did it "hit" them? No they didnt wrong to me. Is it possible that we could use english to explain things here?
>>
>>37609066
This is the most unintentionally funny thing I've read all week. christ OP
>>
Looks like op enjoys sticky things. Too bad he ignores the one sticky that matters.

>10 minutes

HAHAHAHAHA
Why don't you go try it and report back OP?
>>
>>37610304
Did you manage to do the lift with decent form?

You autistic fuckwit.
Even if your English is shit, you could try to use the context a word is used in to figure out what it means.
>>
>>37610237
Did you fail a set?
Well you might have had an unsuccessful work out.

There are a couple exceptions.

Say you fail the first set at the target weight, but manage to complete the next 2 workset.
Well you just failed to warm up properly, this counts as a successful workout, add weight.

Say you manage the first set, all 5 reps clean, strict, and easy. But you fail the next two sets. You didnt rest long enough (when you start lifting really heavy, you might rest as long as 10 minutes, though that is uncommon for novices). This still counts as a successful workout, add weight.
>>
one set can last about 7 minutes with me

Hey man, if you are looking to stockpile lifting info..

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dl8v6frDJHc (This entire video series is pretty awesome)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xTDapcklnV8 (As is this one)
You should also read starting strength.
>>
>>37611191
what the fuck are you doing then
>>
Because most people train with piss poor intensity. They think because they use heavy weights, that equates to "intensity" when they spend most of their time looking in the mirror, chatting, or looking at their smartphones. You can get a very high intensity workout done in about 20 minutes, and really with extra volume (like Dorian Yates' workouts) it should still be under 40mins.
